Many archival databases, in an attempt to mimic library discovery layers and web search engines, have collapsed the archival aggregation into item-level records, which can erase the context and structure of the content described. This article examines the communication breakdown that happens between the archivist and end user via online archival description and proposes solutions to improve multi-level description including the use of predicates in links, increased online instructional support, and the inclusion of digitized assets in archival description databases.","PeriodicalId":276592,"journal":{"name":"Emerging Library & Information Perspectives","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132247768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since these processes require the input of personally identifiable student and patron information to be effective, there are major ethical and legal considerations that must be addressed concerning privacy. This article demonstrates that privacy concerns about learning analytics can be mitigated by requiring informed consent from participants, establishing protocols for the collection and management of personally identifiable information, and advocating privacy rights of patrons. By synthesizing and expanding on viewpoints from the literature, this article offers recommendations pertaining to the collection, analysis, and management of patron data that are gathered for the purpose of learning analytics.","PeriodicalId":276592,"journal":{"name":"Emerging Library & Information Perspectives","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133694447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article focuses on ten books for children ages eight to twelve that include transgender characters. The books are as follows: Lily and Dunkin; The Boy in the Dress; Sapphire the Great and the Meaning of Life; George; Gracefully Grayson; Zenobia July; A Boy Named Queen; The Pants Project; The Other Boy; and My Life as a Diamond. This article offers a brief synopsis of the ten selected books and a discussion of how each book fits into transgender literature as a whole. A thematic analysis revealed six themes that occur in nearly all of the books studied: gender transition, the nuclear family, adult antagonists, bullies, resolutions, and racial diversity. This study will be useful to librarians and teachers wishing to increase their knowledge and awareness of LGBTQ2S+ literature and add to their LGBTQ2S+ collection.","PeriodicalId":276592,"journal":{"name":"Emerging Library & Information Perspectives","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124731247","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It essentially involves giving the right people the right knowledge (including the right sources) at the right time (Velmurugan & Thavamani, 2014). The process of knowledge management encompasses knowledge creation, knowledge codification, and knowledge sharing. Drawing from my work experience at Markham Public Library, conversations with other library workers, and insights from relevant coursework in the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program at Western University, this reflection will explore how each of these practices are enacted in public libraries.","PeriodicalId":276592,"journal":{"name":"Emerging Library & Information Perspectives","volume":"138 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134053137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Co-op programs allow students to gain relevant work experience, apply their theoretical knowledge of librarianship in the field, and identify new areas for professional development; however, one aspect is often overlooked in these programs. LIS co-op students can expand their experiential learning by proposing and pursuing new projects in the field, which will enhance their overall education and support their institution and profession at the same time.
