The consumption of alcohol in France is culturally, but also historically, anchored in social and family habits. Even if wine represents, since a long time, the national drink that we find on the tables of all the French homes, each region or almost, cultivates its alcoholic drink, its brandy, resulting from the process of distillation. Whether it is chartreuse, armagnac, calvados or kirsch for example, these brandies are the fruit of a know-how specific to each territory, and especially the result of the evolution of distillation techniques using a distillation apparatus known as a still. From the tribicos of antiquity to the introduction of steam in the distillation process in the 19th century, through the invention of the coil in the Middle Ages and the alcoholic rectification during the modern period, the still has gone through history and has undergone a constant evolution thanks to alchemists, doctors, engineers, industrialists and simple distillers, the \"bouilleurs de cru\", in France. It is this technical journey that this article traces.","PeriodicalId":276007,"journal":{"name":"e-Phaïstos","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129197436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

And this adoption was only the prelude to its disappearance in favor of the gasoline engine in the 1900s. In this article, I analyze this technical impasse with the help of the concept of \"technical concretization\" (Gilbert Simondon). Thanks to the explanatory process proposed by the philosopher, we will see how the \"steam car on ordinary road\", missed its purpose: the autonomy of the automobile locomotion. The story does not end there, however. The steam car still runs, physically with the replicas of Cugnot's fardier and Trevithick's car, and virtually with the 3D models. We will see in this article that this heritage success is not only due to the fascination that the steam engine still exerts on the public.","PeriodicalId":276007,"journal":{"name":"e-Phaïstos","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130279664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
