It relies on public, workers-union, oral and audio-visual sources. Contemporary French society has been deeply impacted by the progressive disintegration of this blue-collar class, which held a central role up until the end of the 1970’s. We will be presenting a panorama of fights against factory closures using five working-class regions with different specialties, manpower and locations. We have been able to appreciate the chronological depths of those fights, which have existed since the end of WWII and the beginning of the industrial modernization - which has deeply shaken some regions. In 1968, worker insubordination added to the problem of employment and dismissal for many companies. Later, workers’ weapons got weakened by the “awareness of a crisis” but in the meantime, conflicts during the closing of factories increased. Those conflicts, which seldom manage to prevent any closure, are symbolic of the defeat of the working-class. Those workers’ actions, described by the media as final convulsions before death, bear fragments of ethics and a rationality that informs us of the metamorphosis of the working-class identity. Communities and regions are deeply transformed and scarred by the degradation of social indicators, which leads both to social stigma and despair. A collective and individual grieving process then starts, burdened by the physical and moral pain of work, the disappearance of militant, political and work life and the workers’ know-how.
