Inaccurate self-localizations of the vehicles complicate association of locally perceived objects and objects detected and transmitted by other vehicles. In this paper, a method for inter-vehicle object association is presented. Position and orientation offsets between object lists from different vehicles are estimated by applying point matching algorithms. Different algorithms are analyzed in simulations concerning their robustness and performance. Results with a first implementation of the so-called Auction-ICP algorithm in a real test vehicle validate the simulation results.","PeriodicalId":275768,"journal":{"name":"16th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC 2013)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127906450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper addresses a system designed for finding the pedestrians in the road context, which can enhance the pedestrian detection performance based on the contextual correlations. More specifically, stereo vision is employed to seek the free road space based on a Markov Random Field (MRF). Such information is then used for correlation with the pedestrian detection procedure, which is based on a deformable part-based model with histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) features. Experimental results in various typical but challenging scenarios show the effectiveness of the proposed system.","PeriodicalId":275768,"journal":{"name":"16th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC 2013)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131667126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a new cooperative fusion method between two exteroceptive sensors for the detection and tracking of obstacles. Focus is cast on the issue of data association of asynchronous measurements from multiple sensors of different nature. This perception and detection module is applied to local perception embedded on a host vehicle (the ego-vehicle) with two types of complementary sensors (laser scanner and mono-camera). The first detection stage is performed by the mono-layer laser scanner which provides a set of clustered impact points. Those clusters are filtered and projected into the image to define targets. Detected vehicles are tracked using an image registration algorithm. A multi-objects association and tracking algorithm based on belief theory is implemented to estimate the dynamic state of the tracks and to monitor appearance and disappearance of obstacles. Our approach does not make any assumption on the type of driving maneuver and is able to address highly non linear dynamic configuration. The method is applied on both real data and in simulated environment for the validation stage.","PeriodicalId":275768,"journal":{"name":"16th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC 2013)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129214121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Empirical results of a field test with 61 participants revealed that visual field narrowing occurred more often in higher demanded participants. There was also a tendency for visual field narrowing for slightly complex or unchallenging situations. The here proposed detection method of visual field narrowing can provide a basis for the development of sophisticated ADAS functions.","PeriodicalId":275768,"journal":{"name":"16th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC 2013)","volume":"IA-14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126555245","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vehicles approaching the intersection from all sections are globally coordinated, by considering their states all together in a model predictive control framework, for their safe and rapid crossing. The optimal trajectories of the vehicles are computed based on avoidance of the cross-collision risks around the intersection. Compared with the other methods, the scheme enhances safety by generating the trajectories of vehicles far from each other with respect to the cross-collision points and enables turning movements under constrained velocity without using any auxiliary lanes. The proposed coordination scheme is evaluated through numerical simulation for a simple test intersection consisting of four single-lane approaches. Observations under different traffic flow conditions reveal that the proposed scheme significantly improves performance compared with the traditional traffic-light-based intersection control.","PeriodicalId":275768,"journal":{"name":"16th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC 2013)","volume":"163 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121325644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work presents an artificial neural network forecaster methodology applied to traffic flow condition prediction. The spatially distributed architecture uses life-long learning with a novel adaptive Artificial Neural Network based filter to detect and remove outliers from training data. The system has been designed to support traffic engineers in their decision making to react to traffic conditions before they get out of control. We performed experiments using feed-forward backpropagation, cascade-forward back-propagation, radial basis, and generalized regression Artificial Neural Networks for this purpose. Test results on actual data collected from the city of Leicester, UK, confirm our approach to deliver suitable forecasts.","PeriodicalId":275768,"journal":{"name":"16th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC 2013)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121602866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three main control issues in baggage handling systems, namely, routing and scheduling problem, empty-cart management, and line balancing, are identified and a combined control approach based on model predictive control is proposed to tackle these issues in an optimal way. It is shown that the control approach can be formulated as a linear programming problem that can be solved efficiently, and hence can be extended to large-scale baggage handling systems. The applicability and performance of the proposed approach is illustrated by a case study.","PeriodicalId":275768,"journal":{"name":"16th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC 2013)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126807466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During daily operations, trains need to be scheduled on a bidirectional single-track line with multiple stations to cope with various sources of disturbance that alter the existing timetable. We propose a decision support tool based on a detailed mathematical formulation of the single-line train scheduling problem. State-of-the-art scheduling and rerouting optimization algorithms are adopted to compute good quality solutions in a short computation time. Practical data from RFI, train delays and disrupted tracks are investigated in order to quantify the gap, in terms of delay minimization, between the solutions provided by optimization and by the current FIFO-based dispatching practice. The computational results show that advanced scheduling algorithms are useful when dealing with any kind of disturbed traffic situation, since train ordering decisions have to be taken at each station in both traffic directions. Differently, advanced rerouting algorithms are more suitable when mixed traffic is scheduled, since overtaking between trains travelling in the same direction is only favourable when trains travel at different speeds.","PeriodicalId":275768,"journal":{"name":"16th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC 2013)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114217620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent studies in a macroscopic simulator have shown optimal and feedback MTFC potential to improve traffic conditions. In this paper, local feedback MTFC is applied in microscopic simulation for an on-ramp merge bottleneck. Traffic behavior reveals important aspects that had not been previously captured in macroscopic simulation. Mainly, the more realistic VSL application at specific points instead of along an entire freeway section produces a slower traffic response to speed limit changes. In addition, the nonlinear speed limit-flow relation observed in the microscopic model is more pronounced than what was observed at the macroscopic level. After appropriate modifications in the control law significant improvements in traffic conditions were obtained.","PeriodicalId":275768,"journal":{"name":"16th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC 2013)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121119112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
