Static optimization approaches are not helpful, since delays vary significantly (and sometimes, arbitrarily) from one slot to another, and only RTT delays from the current active controller can be easily measured. First, we model the sequence of RTT delays across time as a stationary random process so that the value at each time slot is a sample from an unknown probability distribution with unknown mean. This approach is applicable in relatively static network settings, where stationarity can be assumed. We cast the problem as a stochastic multiarmed bandit, where the arms are the different controller choices, and we fit different bandit algorithms to that setting, such as: the Lowest Confidence Bound (LCB) algorithm by modifying the known Upper Confidence Bound (UCB) one, the LCB-tuned one, and the Boltzmann exploration one. The first two are known to achieve sublinear regret, while the last one turns out to be very efficient. In a second approach, the random process of RTTs is non-stationary and thus cannot be characterized statistically. This scenario is applicable in cases of arbitrary mobility and other dynamics that affect RTT delays in an unpredictable, adversarial manner. We pose the problem as an adversarial bandit that can be solved with the EXP3 algorithm which achieves sublinear regret. We argue that all approaches can be implemented in an SDN environment with lightweight messaging. We also compare the performance of these algorithms for different problem settings and hyper-parameters that reflect the efficiency of the learning process. Numerical evaluation shows that Boltzmann exploration achieves the best performance.","PeriodicalId":275324,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131769064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A promising way to achieve this is using mmWave communications, although beamforming is needed to overcome the high propagation losses at these frequencies. In addition, relaying might be needed to extend the coverage to larger distances for the delivery of a message in a specific geographical area, called geocasting. Moreover, reaching multiple receivers at once via multicasting can be achieved by using a wider antenna beamwidth, which comes at the cost of transmission range, while spatial sharing can be exploited using narrow beams. This paper investigates if using multicasts is beneficial for routing and scheduling of mmWave geocasts that need to be delivered before a timeout. We consider a non-time-slotted system with realistic antenna model and multiple data rates, for which we seek an optimal solution by modeling it as a mixed-integer linear program. Our numerical evaluations show that using multicasts is especially advantageous in scenarios with multiple highway lanes. Furthermore, we devise a heuristic algorithm that efficiently finds a route and creates a transmission schedule for a geocast. Several methods to include multicast links are evaluated, of which some consistently outperform the unicast-only method.","PeriodicalId":275324,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128689736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, enhanced network capabilities facilitate enabling of IoV technology for latency-critical applications in energy-constrained smart IoT devices. However, IoV networks demand energy efficiency due to its dynamic nature for which Roadside Units (RSUs) are critical. However, in cities, huge deployment of RSUs and their maintenance is expensive in IoV infrastructure, requiring a trade-off between the network coverage and installation-related expenses. Also, the latency issues in IoV are highly dependent on the positioning of accessible RSUs. Motivated by the above highlighted issues, we propose an upgraded RSU placement method to boost network efficiency through placement of RSUs in optimal locations in a given road map. The Memetic Framework-based Optimal RSU Deployment (MFRD) algorithm is proposed to maximize the coverage area among the vehicles in an IoV and minimize the overlap in the coverage of the different RSUs. We observed from simulation results based on real-world maps that MFRD yields a significantly higher fitness score as compared to the existing state-of-the-art in terms of optimal positioning of the RSUs.","PeriodicalId":275324,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125644052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, with throughput declining significantly the QoE on existing HSRs is still far from satisfactory. In order to improve QoE on HSRs, this paper seeks to answer the question regarding which is better of two options: the selection of the best cellular carrier applying single-path TCP or the conjunction of multiple carriers applying Multi-path TCP (MPTCP). To this end, we carefully design comparison experiments using the two approaches on HSRs with a peak speed of 310 km/h. Measurement study on MPTCP performance shows that generally carrier conjunction gives similar performance as carrier selection. We take an in-depth analysis of the details of the instances, and for the first time expose the phenomenon called subflow degradation. We further confirm that subflow degradation of MPTCP occurs due to its poor adaptability to frequent handoffs. We believe these insights can provide valuable guidance for the design, implementation, and deployment of transmission protocols in high-speed mobility environments.","PeriodicalId":275324,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"254 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132424031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The framework is based on a non-standalone downlink 5G-NR millimeter wave (mm-wave) network, enabling control signal transmission via an LTE network connection for handover coordination and overcoming radio link failure (RLF). Our framework provides customizable interfaces to a threshold-based beam management operation. Furthermore, we propose three 5G-NR-compliant beam management strategies and analyze their performance using site-specific propagation and pedestrian mobility data. Overall, our results show the end-to-end implications of realistic beam management operations required to maintain high-rate mobile user performance, with frequent signal-to-noise ratio variations reflected as significant drops in the achievable throughput and high delay spikes. This highlights the importance of the presented ns-3 framework compared to the ideal, instantaneous beam scanning supported in existing ns-3 mm-wave modules, for realistic 5G-NR beam management evaluation. To this end, we provide open access to the ns-3 code to facilitate the research efforts of the wireless community.","PeriodicalId":275324,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"145 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127305735","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While current trends in forecasting for anticipatory networking lean towards the systematic adoption of models that are purely based on deep learning approaches, we pave the way for a different strategy to the design of predictors for mobile network environments. Specifically, following recent advances in time series prediction, we consider a hybrid approach that blends statistical modelling and machine learning by means of a joint training process of the two methods. By tailoring this mixed forecasting engine to the specific requirements of network traffic demands, we develop a Thresholded Exponential Smoothing and Recurrent Neural Network (TES-RNN) model. We experiment with TES-RNN in two practical network management use cases, i.e., (i) anticipatory allocation of network resources, and (ii) mobile traffic anomaly prediction. Results obtained with extensive traffic workloads collected in an operational mobile network show that TES-RNN can yield substantial performance gains over current state-of-the-art predictors in both applications considered.","PeriodicalId":275324,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"133 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123395359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Beyond their original design of finding lost objects, these devices have the ability to extend the capabilities of current wireless smart devices. Since its launch in 2019, Apple’s FindMy enables any devices from their brand to be easily tracked by more than 1 billion active iPhones and iPads on the market. While convenient, these systems may even serve further uses, including as a result of this work, crowd sensing and a side channel for mobile communication. But they also raise privacy concerns for their users. In this paper, we demonstrate how Apple FindMy can be used as a privacy-friendly tool for crowd monitoring, and how it may inadvertently leak information on a person’s location in case of deliberate tracking. Additionally, we design and evaluate a proof of concept protocol, using the Apple FindMy and a crafted tag using a simple microcontroller. We show how such system could be used to transmit information at very low bit rates, while the devices transporting the information remain unaware of this covert channel, yielding an out of band communication channel.","PeriodicalId":275324,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129090036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concept of Signal Area (SA) was recently introduced in the context of spectrum occupancy measurements as the rectangular region in the time-frequency domain where a signal is believed to be present. An accurate estimation of the original SA for each radio transmission contained in a spectrogram can provide valuable information in many practical application scenarios, such as autonomous spectrum-aware wireless communication systems. In this context, this work proposes new methods for an accurate Signal Area Estimation (SAE) based on the application of the Hough Transform (HT) combined with other techniques from the field of image processing. The performance of the proposed methods is evaluated by means of simulations and experiments. The obtained results show that they can achieve a high level of SAE accuracy. Moreover, an interesting and distinguishing feature of the proposed methods is their ability to not only improve the accuracy of the SAE but also to extract automatically the coordinates and dimensions of each SA detected in a radio spectrogram. This feature can be useful in the automatic processing of radio spectrograms, for example in the context of autonomous spectrum-aware wireless systems.","PeriodicalId":275324,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124715614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
