The method however does not always achieve good results when the load torque is not constant. For proper results temporal analysis on determined frequency harmonics is needed. The wavelength scanning technique was used to measure group and phase birefringence along with its wavelength dependence and the method was also adapted to intermodal birefringence measurements. It was found that selective infiltration of the HB PCF fiber with a LC changes its birefringence sign of the fiber. Since refractive indices of LCs depend on temperature, thermally-induced birefringence tuning in PLCFs is possible.","PeriodicalId":274130,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Technology Conference IMTC 2007","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115009540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method consists in exciting the sensor by a pulse produced by the impact of a high-stiffness and small-mass sphere. First, we give some physical grounds on the impact phenomenon. Then, we propose a simple experimental set-up, and suggest how to tune it at its best. We emphasize the convenience of conditioning the sensors by a differential charge amplifier if this is feasible. Finally, we apply the impact-method to two commercial sensors. As a result, we managed to characterize one of them in a bandwidth up to 250 kHz, detecting up to three resonance frequencies. We discuss the advantages of this technique in comparison with the standard calibration methods.","PeriodicalId":274130,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Technology Conference IMTC 2007","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115625427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Of particular importance is rice, being a commodity crop. The ability to recognize defining characteristics for identification is desirable as fraudulent mislabeling of rice grain varieties is a growing problem. In the present work a digital imaging approach has been devised in order to investigate different types of characteristics to identify different rice varieties. Eight different common rice varieties were used in tests for defining features. These include existing standards for grain length and aspect ratio features, but also successfully show the effectiveness of compactness as a feature. A novel texture feature is also shown to be able to distinguish brown and milled rice in greyscale images. All of these techniques are employed in an inexpensive imaging system that is non-intrusive and nondestructive. A highly effective yet simple imaging setup and processing system is established, permitting image acquisition, image processing, and feature extraction. Features are assessed using unsupervised clustering techniques, showing the dissimilarity between different varieties to a degree that would allow successful identification.","PeriodicalId":274130,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Technology Conference IMTC 2007","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123126301","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The four microphones, with three on the head center level and one on the top, provide spatial cues for sound elevation as well as azimuth. A weighted cross-correlation method based on the model of the precedence effect is used to calculate the time differences and suppress the influence of echoes. To integrate spatial cues of different microphone pairs, a mapping method from the correlation between different microphone pairs to a 2-D map corresponding to azimuth and elevation of sound sources was proposed. Experiments shows the system can provide the distribution of sound sources in azimuth-elevation space for sound sources, even concurrently in reverberant environments.","PeriodicalId":274130,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Technology Conference IMTC 2007","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121119288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aperiodic steady state of the linear periodical time-varying system may be described using a circular parametric operator. Within the domain of discrete time, such an operator takes the form of a constant real entries matrix. This way of system characterization is adopted to describe the steady state of the non-linear system. For reconstructing distorted signals some inverse circular parametric operators are determined using an original identification algorithm based on the set of input and output signals. The non-linear system operation depends on input signal shape and amplitude, thus each operator is determined for the different, so called, basic input signal. The described method is effective in some situations, but it requires further research to improve accuracy.","PeriodicalId":274130,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Technology Conference IMTC 2007","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124869274","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By selecting nano-porous electrodes, the enzyme adsorption has been increased and the usage of a cross linking agent has enhanced the performances of the sensor remarkably. A thin film of PPy/PF6 - was synthesized with 0.05 M Pyrrole, 0.1 M NaPF6 at a current density of 0.3 mA/cm2 for 90 s. The immobilization was done by physically adsorbing 5 muL of glucose oxidase (GOx) on PPy thin film. Glutaraldehyde (0.1 wt.%, 5 muL)was used for cross-linking. The synthesized films were characterized by using amperometric electrochemical technique and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Amperometric responses were measured as a function of different concentrations of glucose. Nanoporous electrodes lead to high enzyme loading. Stability, sensitivity, reproducibility and repeatability have been increased with the usage of cross-linking.","PeriodicalId":274130,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Technology Conference IMTC 2007","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124937055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dielectric properties for these nanostructured carbon materials are measured using the rectangular waveguide technique and are determined in the frequency regime ranging 8-40 GHz. The data is represented in terms of dielectric constants and both real and imaginary parts of permittivity and permeability. These results represents a milestone in such measurements for carbon nanotube structures serving as a model such that it covers a wide frequency range using an efficient, non-invasive and highly accurate technique that is ideal for high frequency characterization for a variety of nanoscale materials.","PeriodicalId":274130,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Technology Conference IMTC 2007","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123320768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
