Zoomed Ranking, originally proposed to generate a ranking of candidate algorithms, is employed to solve a given classification problem based on performance information from previous problems. The problem of model selection in Zoomed Ranking was solved in two distinct phases. In the first phase, we selected a subset of problems from the instances base that were similar to the new problem at hand. This selection is made using the k-Nearest Neighbor algorithm, whose distance function uses the characteristics of the series. In the second phase, the ranking of candidate models was generated based on performance information (accuracy and execution time) of the models in the series selected from the previous phase. Our experiments using the Zoomed Ranking revealed encouraging results.","PeriodicalId":274073,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Conference on Hybrid Intelligent Systems (HIS'04)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131492190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Up to the present time, PID controller has been used to operate this system. However, it is very difficult to achieve an optimal PID gain with no experience, since the gain of the PID controller has to be manually tuned by trial and error. This paper focuses on tuning of the controller with disturbance rejection using immune based multiobjective approach. Adopting the divide and conquer strategies, we propose a novel algorithm, called block learning algorithm, to learn Bayesian network structures. The method partitions the variables into several blocks that are overlapped with each other. The blocks are learned individually with some constraints obtained from the learned overlap structures. After that, the whole network is recovered by combining the learned blocks. Comparing with some typical learning algorithms on golden Bayesian networks, our proposed methods are efficient and effective. It shows a large potential capability to be scaled up.","PeriodicalId":274073,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Conference on Hybrid Intelligent Systems (HIS'04)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127025163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Predicting the secondary structure from the protein sequence has attracted the attention of many researchers. Support vector machine (SVM) is a new learning algorithm that has been successfully applied to many prediction problems. However, the algorithm takes a long time to train the prediction model when a large data set is present. It becomes important to revise the method so that the time performance is improved while the accuracy performance is maintained. In this study, we implement a genetic algorithm to cluster the training set before a prediction model is built. Using position specific scoring matrix (PSSM) as part of the input, the hybrid method achieves good performances on sets of 513 nonredundant protein sequences and 294 partially redundant sequences. The results also show that clustering achieves the goal of data preprocessing differently on redundant and nonredundant sets, and it seems almost preferable to cluster the data before prediction is preformed.","PeriodicalId":274073,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Conference on Hybrid Intelligent Systems (HIS'04)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120980392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Owing to long response delay, revenues of the enterprises are substantially reduced due to many aborted e-commerce transactions. Recently, researchers have been addressing different admission control schemes of differentiated service for Web servers to complement the Internet differentiated services model and thereby provide QoS support to the users of the World Wide Web. However, most of these admission control mechanisms do not guarantee the QoS requirements of all admitted clients under bursty workload. Although an Internet service model called proportional differentiated service is enabled in Web servers to improve the QoS guarantee predicament in the literature, it still exists some impracticable assumptions and incompatible problems with the current Internet protocols. In this paper, we propose two algorithms for admission control and traffic scheduler schemes of the Web server under proportional differentiated service, wherein a time series predictor is embedded to estimate the traffic load of the client in the next time period. Two different approaches are used to implement the time series predictor due to the achievement of successful prediction in the literature. The experimental results reveal that the proposed schemes can realize proportional delay differentiation service in multiclass Web server effectively when the support vector regression is used as the time series predictor.","PeriodicalId":274073,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Conference on Hybrid Intelligent Systems (HIS'04)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123344324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

HIV is mainly a sexually transmitted disease (STD) causing a serious problem to human health. The virus is transmitted from an infected person to another who was previously healthy through different biological, social and environmental factors. The research develops the simulation tool by modelling these factors by agents. Although research has and is being conducted to estimate and predict the spread of the HIV epidemic, the proposed research seeks to investigate the spread using a different approach. The previous models used a top-down modelling approach. They are built from the general characteristics and behaviours of the population. They have not explored the potential use of agent technology. This research attempts to investigate the flexibility that the multi-agent system offers. Agent-based models are close to the situations that exist in a given real system that consists of autonomous components interacting with each other. The modelling approach has the advantage of observing the interaction made between agents, which is a difficult task in the top-down modelling approach. The research investigates the performance of the tool and presents the first results obtained.","PeriodicalId":274073,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Conference on Hybrid Intelligent Systems (HIS'04)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134394329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Machine learning techniques have played a significant role by handling the inherent complexity of such systems. Robotic Soccer is a typical multiagent system, wherein the challenge is to develop and hone the skills of the agents that take part in the game. For an in-depth and sophisticated understanding of the game, soccer-playing agents must possess the capability to learn and acquire low-level skills. These skills can later be put together and used to emulate the expertise of experienced players. This paper describes the use of reinforcement learning, a machine learning technique, to acquire the base level skills of intercepting a moving ball. Results of simulation runs using the Robocup Soccer server have also been presented.","PeriodicalId":274073,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Conference on Hybrid Intelligent Systems (HIS'04)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131927445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
