It is not to be confused with instructional processes or methodology, with media or materials, or with experiences. Curriculum relates to all of these, but \"1relating to\" should not be confused with \"meaning the same as.\" The definition does not imply any values or biases about who should decide what the curriculum is to be or who shall plan or intend. Curriculum determination is a process of deciding on broad areas of substance to be included in the curriculum. It deals with goals for the curriculum, and leads to decisions about whether learnings are to be planned and developed in mathematics, or sex and drug education, or driver training, or vocational preparation. Here again, the definition is neutral about who shall engage in the process. Curriculum development is a process of organizing and constructing the substance of the curriculum. Informed decision making in this area requires knowledge about each of the determined areas, and the process usually involves some concentrated efforts. I want to examine exegetically what Schwab is telling us there. I will do this both by exploring the particular argument of this paper in the light of the forms of argument Schwab habitually uses and also by extrapolating from the argument of the essay to the further problem of constructing a practicable curriculum for a \"practice\" curriculum. This act of extrapolation is, I believe (and I hope I can show), important not only practically but also theoretically. My discussion will suggest, I hope, that many of the current readings of Schwab's thesis underestimate both the significance and the power of both his analysis of and his solutions to the plight of curriculum as a field. At the same time I hope to show some of the issues that will need development before we can say that we have a new and complete paradigm for curriculum at hand.","PeriodicalId":273582,"journal":{"name":"Curriculum Theory Network","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132505361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
