Southern Company (NYSE: SO) is an international energy company that operates more than 48000 megawatts of electric generating capacity worldwide. It is one of the largest producers of electricity in the United States and one of the world's largest independent power producers. This presentation describes the \"Southern LINC\" Mobile Computing system in operation at Southern Company. Southern LINC, which stands for Long-range Integrated Network Communications, covers 127000 square miles in the Southeast, including major metro and rural areas in Alabama, Georgia, southeastern Mississippi and northwest Florida. Using Motorola's iDEN technology, Southern LINC combines multiple communication services into one handset or installed device including Instant LINC/sup SM/ two-way radio, phone service, numeric and text paging, and Informance Solutions/sup SM/. A Utility Grade Construction Standard was used in building the system, e.g., emergency power systems, redundant electronics, redundant environmental systems, and hardened shelters. Details are provided on the Southern LINC features, e.g., group call, private call, call alert, interconnect, short messaging service (SMS), circuit switched data, packet data, and other advanced features. The traditional methods such as tree trimming, shield wire, lightning arresters, and different types of line construction address the root cause of distribution circuit faults. The automated approaches mainly reduce the duration of the outages through the addition of remote control. More robust applications of automation can reduce the number of customers interrupted as well as the duration of the customer outages. As deregulation in the electric utility industry expands, state utility commissions are looking to measure and control the reliability of electric service to all customers in their state. Automated approaches have been presented as a quick fix to reliability problems. Although these matrices are complex and frequency-dependent, electromagnetic transients programs (EMTP) assume them to be real and constant, and for their computation shunt conductances are usually not taken into account. Also, the transformation matrix elements do not always behave smoothly due to eigenvector switchovers. In this paper: (a) shunt conductances are included in eigenvalue/eigenvector calculations; (b) transformation matrices are considered to be complex and frequency-dependent; (c) a procedure to avoid eigenvector switchovers is used; and (d) Y/sub c/(/spl omega/) and A(/spl omega/) are calculated considering the transformation matrices to be real-constant, complex-constant and complex-frequency-dependent. It is shown that discontinuities due to eigenvector switchovers may produce discontinuities in Y/sub c/(/spl omega/) and that accuracy is improved if the transformation matrices are considered to be complex and frequency-dependent.","PeriodicalId":273578,"journal":{"name":"2001 Power Engineering Society Summer Meeting. The research on TCSC and SVC is abundant, but most of them are on power system stability improvement. This paper proposes a new use of TCSC and SVC to reduce load curtailments. An algorithm of optimal power flow (OPF) to reduce the load curtailment for installing TCSC/SVC in the system is proposed in this paper. Several examples are used to demonstrate the effect on load curtailment. The test results show that the effect of TCSC/SVC is significant. ACSS/TW is constructed of fully annealed aluminum wires formed into a trapezoidal shape. The aluminum wires are stranded around a steel core of seven or more wires as described in ASTM B-857. The improved conductor can operate continuously at temperatures up to 250/spl deg/C without loss of strength or detriment to the conductor. The final sags are not affected by creep and the change in sag with temperature is less than that of conventional composite conductors. It also has excellent self-damping characteristics. ACSS/TW can be designed with both equal area or equal diameter, compared to conventional round stranded conductors, to optimize line design options.","PeriodicalId":273578,"journal":{"name":"2001 Power Engineering Society Summer Meeting. This is one of the largest HVDC links in the world. New technologies, such as high-voltage large-capacity light-triggered thyristors, DC gas-insulated switchgear, new HVDC control method and so on, had been newly developed in order to reduce construction costs and installation space for equipment and also improve system reliability. HVDC system performance tests were carried out under the condition of connecting with commercial AC power system from January to June 2000. In these system tests, fundamental operation functions, PM (power modulation) function, EFC (emergency frequency control) function and so on, were confirmed. The load is composed of induction motors in parallel with the constant power and constant impedance load. The response of the system undergoes various bifurcations such as subcritical and supercritical Hopf, period-doubling and saddle-node bifurcations as the load increased. The latter may lead the system to voltage collapse. With open access come new entrants to the market and an increased liquidity of the market. This paper concentrates on project valuation and power portfolio management issues in a competitive utility environment. These issues include decisions on whether or not to enter into contracts to buy or sell energy over the short or long term, whether or not to build a power plant, whether or not to defer or accelerate a project, etc. The methodology presented potentially has wide application in the deregulated competitive electricity market, from managing the power portfolio of a marketer facing competition and valuing a risky power plant investment by an independent power producer to pricing electricity options and determining the insurance premium appropriate for the entity's risk tolerance.","PeriodicalId":273578,"journal":{"name":"2001 Power Engineering Society Summer Meeting.
