By analyzing the thematic, rhetorical and enunciative features deployed by the textual surfaces that circulate in public and/or virtual spaces, as well as some significant absences, we aim at problematizing the visual common sense that shapes our individual and collective perceptions on mafia. Due to the proliferation of those visualities and their tendency to spectacularization of the phenomenon of mafias, they would result in a «gaslighting» which tends to naturalize a poorly informed (if not openly biased) interpretation, which paradoxically hides more than what it shows.","PeriodicalId":273297,"journal":{"name":"Comparative Cultural Studies - European and Latin American Perspectives","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115271710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indeed, for a long time it seems to have been the object of a surprising paradox: while it was factually present on French territory, the press seemed to focus mainly on its role in Italy. However, in recent years, two events have gradually overturned this view: the attacks on the newspaper Charlie Hebdo in January 2015, and then the presence of Saviano who, as a literary and media figure, has liberated the word around the organisation and expansion of Italian organised crime.","PeriodicalId":273297,"journal":{"name":"Comparative Cultural Studies - European and Latin American Perspectives","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130638461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I try to show how the film configures a representation of the Sicilian mafia of the 1930s less from the historical facts than from the speech of the journalistic chronicle of the time, of the Hollywood and Argentine cinematographic tradition and also from the literary tradition and the political imaginary linked to Peronism. In turn, the film itself – enormously successful with critics and audiences alike – goes on to feed the Argentine imaginary of that mafia, which continues to operate largely as an important influence on the political imaginary.","PeriodicalId":273297,"journal":{"name":"Comparative Cultural Studies - European and Latin American Perspectives","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125674979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But they also describe social and behavioural propensities present in the cultural folds of a specific social group. The role of newspapers, sounding boards for certain ethnic, political, economic and social sentiments, is fundamental to study the rapid consumption of these communicative processes whose contents end up being internalised even before they are processed. Beyond the level of scientific substance of which they are composed. In relation to the treatment of Italian mafias in the press, this manuscript aims to analyse, based on a selection of articles published between 2018 and 2022, the narratives produced by “La Gente d’Italia”, an Italian-language ethnic newspaper based in Uruguay, on the combination between persistence and change, between maintaining consolidated structures and adapting to the changes in the economic and social context in which the mafia is present today.","PeriodicalId":273297,"journal":{"name":"Comparative Cultural Studies - European and Latin American Perspectives","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123610748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is Los Cubrepileta, a sketch that was part of Cha Cha Cha starring Alfredo Casero, Fabio Alberti, Diego Capusotto, Vivian El Jaber, Jorge Takashima, Alejandra Flechner, among others. Cha Cha Cha was a crazy, surreal and absurd program broadcast during 1993 and from 1995 to 1997 on América TV. Although the space was never massive, it is interesting to observe and analyze the way in which the sketch dedicated to an Italian family (Los Cubrepileta) parody the mafia with gags, jokes and set phrases inspired by movies and novels as well as the stereotype from the Italian mobster. To this is added another interesting fact, the reproduction of the sketches on YouTube, the visualizations and the comments on them.","PeriodicalId":273297,"journal":{"name":"Comparative Cultural Studies - European and Latin American Perspectives","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127407065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
