Snow can be categorized into different types having different properties. Snow can be granular, fluffy, dry or wet. One of the properties of snow that can be determined from snow stratigraphy studies is the amount of water it contains; this is known as Snow Water Equivalent (SWE). Snow stratigraphy is useful in several applications like accurate assessment of water availability from snow melt, estimation of snow-pack strength etc. The knowledge of snow-pack strength can be useful for the prediction of avalanche sensitive regions. There are several techniques available for snow stratigraphy studies and the measurement of SWE. Most of these techniques are invasive and time consuming in nature. Researchers are working on promising non-invasive acoustic techniques along with signal processing methods for the snow stratigraphy studies. Several snow stratigraphy techniques along with their merits and demerits are discussed and, in particular, non-invasive acoustic techniques and their associated signal processing methods are presented.","PeriodicalId":272955,"journal":{"name":"2013 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SIGNAL PROCESSING AND COMMUNICATION (ICSC)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114283173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We study the advantages of having multiple chains in a network with each chain's topmost node (called the aggregator) collecting the data from the nodes beneath it and transmitting it to the sink. In the proposed scheme, a chain in each region works as PEGASIS. We also study how considering heterogeneity in the network can improve the lifetime of a network by a significant period. We assume that a fraction of the nodes in the network possess additional energy. We show by simulations that the introduction of heterogeneity into the network results in a greater lifetime, compared to those of the classical data aggregation schemes, with the duration increasing with the amount of additional energy considered.","PeriodicalId":272955,"journal":{"name":"2013 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SIGNAL PROCESSING AND COMMUNICATION (ICSC)","volume":"20 9","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120912367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, an efficient BCD adder is designed based on low power synthesis technique at the architectural level. There are different levels of abstraction at which the power can be minimized but the low power technique at the architectural level has more impact than that of circuit level approaches. Two different approaches have been discussed i.e. pipelining and parallelism, so as to minimize the power consumption at architectural level. The proposed designs are tested and implemented using VHDL and the Xilinx ISE 10.1 targeting Xilinx XC5VLX30-3 FPGA. The result shows the optimization of power, delays and the area for different designs and a comparison analysis is provided based on the existing designs in the literature.","PeriodicalId":272955,"journal":{"name":"2013 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SIGNAL PROCESSING AND COMMUNICATION (ICSC)","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116714301","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many researchers have proved that ECG can be used as a biometric for person identification. ECG is time variant signal. This paper presents an analysis on the possibility to use electrocardiogram as a biometric over a longer time period. Data used during the experimentation is recorded from two different subjects, within thirty six months. Lead II signal is used for the analysis purpose. One sample from the recording of each of the two subjects is considered as an enrolled database and the remaining samples are used for the testing purpose. Analysis is made using discrete wavelet transform, which showed the accuracy of more than 91% to conclude that the ECG signals are sufficiently distinct for an individual. ECG as a biometric has an advantage as it checks the aliveness of an individual and the possibility of falsification can be removed.","PeriodicalId":272955,"journal":{"name":"2013 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SIGNAL PROCESSING AND COMMUNICATION (ICSC)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115209820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This new algorithm first locates original and pseudo extrema and then uses nonpolynomial spline interpolation to determine the upper and lower envelope at each decomposition step. A set of algebraic equations for the nonpolynomial spline interpolation is derived. A numerical simulation has been carried out for the analysis of error in spline interpolations. Various time series analysis have been preformed to show comparison among EMD and ensemble EMD (EEMD) based on polynomial spline, and nonpolynomial spline based EMD. Nonpolynomial spline based EMD algorithm is promising and generating better results.","PeriodicalId":272955,"journal":{"name":"2013 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SIGNAL PROCESSING AND COMMUNICATION (ICSC)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115411494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study performs the classification of multiple fingerprint images using Hu Moments based Wavelet designing and Modified VZ Classification Algorithm. The proposed work is divided into two stages. One is the wavelet designing stage and second is the classification stage. The use of moments as filter coefficients is motivated with a discussion on the type of information extracted by a filter and its representation. The basic VZ classification algorithm used has been modified in this work, which is initially developed within a rotationally invariant framework. The probabilistic neural network and support vector machine classifiers are employed for the advancement of VZ algorithm and better classification. The designing and classification stages of the VZ algorithm are described, and the performance on different sets is evaluated. The performance is evaluated on the standard fingerprint verification certification FVC2004 database. The comparative simulation experiments show that the classification produces a good performance as compared to previous results and providing high accuracy in classification rates. Performance of these two classifiers is compared among themselves as well as with the previously reported articles. This concludes that PNN has 99.23% classification rate for classification of ten classes of fingerprint images, which is better than that of SVM.","PeriodicalId":272955,"journal":{"name":"2013 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SIGNAL PROCESSING AND COMMUNICATION (ICSC)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115147926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This waveform can be used as the scaling function for analysing the signals produced by that particular musical instrument, provided it satisfies the necessary and sufficient condition for a scaling function. In this paper, the filter coefficients corresponding to this scaling function is obtained using Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) technique. For known wavelets, like Daubechies, the scaling function can be iteratively found from the filter coefficients. However, it is difficult to generate the filter coefficients from the wavelets without the knowledge of some characteristics of the scaling function or the wavelet. In this context, the PSO model which has been developed here gives very accurate values of the filter coefficients for any given scaling function. Further, ordinary PSO is modified for better optimization resulting in a new wavelet for music signals called as Sinith-Shikha-Murthy (SSM) wavelet. The working of the proposed models are verified using Daubechies wavelet. The filter coefficients corresponding to the signal generated by musical instruments flute and violin are also found. The regeneration of the scaling function iteratively using the obtained filter coefficients confirmed the results.","PeriodicalId":272955,"journal":{"name":"2013 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SIGNAL PROCESSING AND COMMUNICATION (ICSC)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127793468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
