However, there are no studies demonstrating the effectiveness of this treatment and its effects on the periodontal condition. The aim of this systematic review (SR) was to evaluate the effectiveness of circumferential supracrestal fiberotomy (CSF) as an adjuvant in the stability of orthodontic treatment during retention and its effects on the periodontal condition once it has been performed. Methods: the search for topic-related studies was conducted on the PubMed and EMBASE databases until October 2018. The studies were considered eligible if they covered the use of CSF during the retention period and reported the periodontal condition in a follow-up period longer than or equal to 1 year. For bias-risk assessment in the chosen studies, the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was applied to observational studies, and the Cochrane Collaboration tool for Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs) and Controlled Clinical Trials (CCTs). Results: the search strategy yielded 85 potential eligible articles, of which 5 were included in the SR. Four of the five studies reported a lower irregularity rate in patients who had CSF when compared toa control group. No changes in plaque index, gingival index, insertion levels, probe depth and keratinized gingiva amountwere reported. Conclusions: fiberotomy is an effective method to prevent relapse of previously rotated teeth and does not cause periodontal alterations. However, it is important to note that the studies’ methodological quality was low.","PeriodicalId":272900,"journal":{"name":"Revista Facultad de Odontología","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121296370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many treatment protocols use laser radiation, but there is still no evidence as to whether one of them is superior to all the other. The objective was to establish whether there is evidence that LLLT can reduce the main symptoms of TMDs and to determine the most effective application protocol. Methods: a systematic review of the literature was performed in the main databases: PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science, by independent researchers who evaluated studies using different LLLT protocols to treat TMD symptoms, considering specific outcomes such as pain, mouth opening and jaw movements. Results: thirteen studies fully met the eligibility criteria. The most used laser type was GaAlAg, with a wavelength of 830 nm, number of applications ranging from 8 to 10, and 4 weeks of follow-up. Conclusions: LLLT may be considered as an alternative for the relief of TMD symptoms; however, scientific evidence of one of the protocols being superior to the others could not be found.","PeriodicalId":272900,"journal":{"name":"Revista Facultad de Odontología","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125490982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This case deals with the excision of a traumatic fibroma using diode laser (Epic X, wavelength of 940nm, continuous mode, 5W power), whose energy is absorbed by hemoglobin and melanin (chromophores) and is indicated in soft tissue surgeries, favoring coagulation. The results are consistent with the benefits demonstrated in the scientific literature: better visibility in the surgical act due to achieved hemostasis, excellent postoperative phase due to the absence of pain and inflammation, with no need for analgesic medication, no use of sutures, no scarring and no recurrence. It is a safe and fast procedure that also allows performing a histopathological study without altering the tissues to be examined. In the case presented here, the histopathological study confirmed the presumptive diagnosis of fibroma.","PeriodicalId":272900,"journal":{"name":"Revista Facultad de Odontología","volume":"484 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133694746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method: experimental in vitro study, performing synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and UV-visible spectroscopy to confirm presence of AgNPs in the prepared solutions. The ZOE mixture was standardized, producing the integrated AgNPs/ZOE material. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize the integrated material; a KirbyBauer assay was finally run to measure the inhibition halos produced by the compound-microorganism interaction. Results: the UV-visible spectroscopy showed presence of AgNPs in the created solution; both SEM and FTIR show that the AgNPs are integrated into the ZOE system, not altering their properties when performed under conditions like those found in the mouth. The Kirby-Bauer assay shows that all samples had inhibition halos. The AgNPs in guava extract had statistically significant differences with the halos of the other samples (p < 0.05). Conclusions: the obtained AgNPs show bactericidal activity against Enterococcus faecalis, as a statistically significant difference was found between the AgNPs suspended in guava extract and the other groups; this will be the starting point for future research","PeriodicalId":272900,"journal":{"name":"Revista Facultad de Odontología","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114192241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these resources may not be sufficient to counteract the multiple factors involved in the process of dental caries, especially in high-risk patients. There are alternatives that have been extensively researched, such as casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) which provides essential ions, like phosphate and calcium, acting as an adjuvant in the remineralization process. Manufacturers of CPP-ACP-based products also suggest that it can produce desensitizing effects. This nanocomplex has been used experimentally with some dental cements and adhesive systems, but it is important to clarify the effects of this procedure, and the remineralizing/desensitizing advantages it offers. The objective of this topic review was to present the state of the art on CPP-ACP nanocomplex. In terms of dental caries prevention, this remineralizing option is not better than NaF. CPP-ACP provides a dental desensitizing action, but it is temporary and less effective than other alternatives such as potassium nitrate or NaF. The experimental incorporation of CPP-ACP into dental cements should be controlled for not to compromise the physico-chemical properties of the material. The use of dental products based on this nanocomplex as dental surface pretreatment may decrease the bond strength of adhesive materials, but this effect is material dependent.","PeriodicalId":272900,"journal":{"name":"Revista Facultad de Odontología","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127030225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

AI may exist in isolation or associated with other systemic conditions as part of a syndromic AI. Our goal is to describe in detail the genes involved in syndromic AI, the proteins encoded by these genes, and their functions according to current scientific evidence. An electronic literature search was carried out from the year 2000 to December 2017, pre-selecting 1,573 articles, 40 of which were analyzed and discussed. The results indicate that mutations in 12 genes are responsible for syndromic AI: DLX3, COL17A1, LAMA3, LAMB3, FAM20A, TP63, CNNM4, ROGDI, LTBP3, FAM20C, CLDN16, CLDN19. These genes participate in the coding of proteins involved in phosphorylation, ion exchange, and production and degradation of the constituent elements of the mineral and organic phase of tooth enamel. The scientific evidence confirms that AI can be part of the syndrome and requires special attention from the medical-dental community.","PeriodicalId":272900,"journal":{"name":"Revista Facultad de Odontología","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123651151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Implant-supported restorations provide an appealing treatment alternative that responds to today’s patient expectations. The gold standard for this scenario has been the use of an implant-supported fixed partial denture with pontics that masks the soft tissue deficiencies, with acceptable esthetic results. However, nowadays patients are looking for individual single crowns since they believe that this type of restorations resemble the natural dentition, are easy to clean and floss. From the dentist perspective, they are easy to maintain and in case of prosthetic complications they can be repaired or changed without compromising the adjacent restorations. Three parameters have been identified that could guide the decision-making process when multiple adjacent implant supported restorations (MAISR) are selected as the treatment of choice: 1) Smile line 2) Inter-implant distance and tooth-implant distance 3) Patient's expectations and ability to clean.","PeriodicalId":272900,"journal":{"name":"Revista Facultad de Odontología","volume":"68 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113961061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
