It is the most common and significant test performed for assessing the well-being of the fetus by observing the fetal heart rate and its acceleration in response to fetal movement. Objective: To evaluate the active nursing management on the nonreactive NST of antenatal mothers above 32 weeks of gestation. Material and Methodology: A descriptive study was conducted at an obstetrics and gynecology OPD of a tertiary care teaching hospital in Chandigarh, India, for a period from October to December 2020. Ethical approval was obtained from the Institute Ethics Committee, PGIMER, Chandigarh. The total sample for the study includes 60 antenatal mothers above 32 weeks of gestation, who were enrolled by enumeration sampling technique. The tools used for collecting the data were as follows: (1) interview schedule that comprised of (a) sociodemographic profile and (b) obstetric profile, and (2) NST graph and pro forma to record the result of NST. The NST was performed in the left lateral position for 20 min and extended to 40 min if desired results were not obtained. Antenatal mothers with nonreactive NST were given active nursing management, such as having breakfast/juice and ambulation/walking around. Again, a half-hour later, NST was repeated. A Philips Avalon FM 30 fetal monitor was used to record all the NST tracings. The results obtained were evaluated by the same obstetrician and gynecologist. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 20. Result: Findings revealed that the majority (85%) of the antenatal mothers had a reactive NST, whereas 10% of antenatal mothers had a nonreactive NST. Out of the 6 (10%) antenatal mothers who were nonreactive, five antenatal mothers were changed into reactive NST after the active nursing management, i.e., maternal ambulation, having breakfast/juice for hydration after half-hour elapsed, whereas one antenatal mother who remained nonreactive NST was referred to a clean labor room after an abnormal ultrasound biophysical profile result by the obstetrician and gynecologist for induction of labor. Conclusion: It is concluded that NST is a significant test to prevent stillbirth. Active nursing management, such as maternal ambulation, well-fed, and well hydration, of the antenatal mothers can change the nonreactive NST to a reactive NST result.","PeriodicalId":272374,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Midwifery Research Journal","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131306408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Life with a sudden disability after discharge at home is not easy for a patient who had undergone amputation both physically as well as psychologically. But how the patients perceive the period of discharge is still an untouched area in literature. Objective: To explore the concerns of the patients with lower limb amputation during transition from hospital to home. Methods: A phenomenological research study was conducted in the amputation clinic of a tertiary care center in North India. Participants were the patients who had undergone lower limb amputation after sudden trauma. The tool used was an interview schedule, which comprised of(a) personal profile of the patients and (b) in-depth interview topic guide. In-depth interviews were conducted until data saturation. After 14 interviews, no fresh responses were received, and therefore, data collection was stopped after 16 interviews. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s method of data analysis. Results: Based on the participants’ verbatim, a total of three themes and eight subthemes were extracted after data analysis. The main theme that emerged was different emotions at the time of discharge, and the subthemes extracted under this theme were “want to leave stressful environment of hospital,” “feeling more secure at hospital,” and “not willing for discharge—anxiety of facing society.” The second theme was “unexpected hardships in the home after discharge,” and subthemes extracted under this theme were “reactions of closed ones,” “facing reality of practical life-unimagined difficulties,” and “immediate comparison to previous healthy life.” The third theme that emerged was “the bright side of amputation,” and subthemes extracted under this theme were “understood the uncertainty of life” and “positive transformation in life.” Conclusion: The study findings highlighted that experience of each individual is unique. Therefore, an individualized and patient-tailored approach must be used while handling such patients. Furthermore, the life at home after amputation comes with multifaceted challenges. Hence, there is a need of rendering detailed discharge information and need-based counseling at the time of discharge.","PeriodicalId":272374,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Midwifery Research Journal","volume":"12 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120822902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Long-term complications and health problems of the patients may impact the physical and mental health of the family caregivers. Support group approach helps the caregivers to deal with the circumstances that may arise during the care of their survivors. Objective: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of support group approach on risk of development of health and behavior problems, level of stress, and coping level among the caregivers of the head injury survivors. Materials and Methods: A quasiexperimental study was conducted in Neurosurgery Units, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. A total of 60 caregivers (30 each in control and experimental groups) were enrolled by total enumeration technique. Data were collected using an interviewing schedule consisting (a) sociodemographic profile of the caregivers, (b) caregiver self-assessment questionnaire, (c) the Kingston caregiver stress scale, and (d) coping scale. The caregivers in the control group received routine care. In the experimental group, they were involved in group discussions during support group meetings. Various methods of dealing with stress, risk for development of health and/or behavior problems, coping strategies were discussed in the support group meetings where the teachings and demonstrations were given to the caregivers. In support group meetings, the caregivers discussed their problems and expressed their ideas and coping strategies to solve their problems. An information booklet on the same was also given to them. The follow-up was carried out at 15 days and 1.5 months of the enrollment of the patients. Results: The risk of development of health and behavior problems decreased in both the experimental and control groups. Median values of caregiver’s stress score was significantly less in the experimental group (P < .01) as compared to the control group. All the caregivers in the experimental group and only 10.0% in the control group had above average coping to deal with the problems in their day-to-day activities. Conclusion: “Support group approach” for the caregivers of head injury caregivers was found to be effective in terms of decreasing the risk of development of health and behavior problems, improving coping, and reducing stress among the caregivers. Therefore, support group approach can be encouraged in order to enhance the knowledge and confidence of the caregivers to deal with the problems of the patients.","PeriodicalId":272374,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Midwifery Research Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129656238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Repeated IM injections of MgSO4 at the same site causes pain, drug leakage, and injection site inflammation. To manage IM injection-related complications, it is important to have an estimation of these adverse effects. Objective: To evaluate the pain, drug leakage, and inflammation associated with IM injections of MgSO4. Material and Methods: A longitudinal descriptive study was carried out in the labor room, PGIMER, Chandigarh. Thirty study participants diagnosed and admitted with preeclampsia were recruited by the total enumeration sampling technique. Each patient received eight IM injections of MgSO4 on the dorsogluteal site as prescribed by the obstetrician. Identification details, clinical, and biophysical characteristics were collected. The pain was assessed by a numerical rating scale (NRS). Sterile blotting paper was used to assess the drug leakage by measuring the wet area of the blotting paper and recording in cm2. A gridded transparent sheet was used for measuring inflammation. The area of the swelling marked and measured by placing the gridded transparent sheet over the swelling and recording in cm2. Results: Pain and drug leakage was significantly increased from the first injection to the eighth injection (P < .05) and inflammation of 100.60 ± 21.23 (Right), 102.07 ± 21.23 (left) cm2 recorded over the buttocks. Conclusion: Significant increase in pain, drug leakage, and inflammation were recorded during the IM administration of MgSO4. For reducing the pain, drug leakage, and inflammation, nonpharmacological interventions and different techniques of IM injections are recommended.","PeriodicalId":272374,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Midwifery Research Journal","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122647129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
