Einhorn","doi":"10.1109/UWBST.2002.1006331","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/UWBST.2002.1006331","url":null,"abstract":"In 1999, Time Domain Corporation (TDC) introduced the first ultra-wideband (UWB) radios using full custom integrated circuits, the PulsON 100 chipset. This paper describes TDC's recently developed second generation precision SiGe timing chip. PulsON time modulated UWB radios are composed of three basic components: (1) a precise timing subsystem; (2) a correlator subsystem (often consisting of multiple correlators); (3) a digital baseband signal processing and system control subsystem. Precise timing is crucial in the design of the PulsON UWB radios. Similar to TDC's earlier T1 chip, the T2 timing generator accurately places pulses within very small windows (100 ns windows for the T1, as small as 50 ns for the T2). These timing chips use a high speed counter to set a coarse delay in 800 ps quantized steps followed by an IQ phase delay circuit that sets a fine delay on top of the course delay to about 3 ps resolution. The T2 positions pulses to an accuracy of better than 3 ps with a jitter of less than 10 ps. The T2 IC, a mixture of analog, digital, and RF functions, operates up to a clock rate of 1.228 GHz, and consumes a maximum of 0.5 W.","PeriodicalId":272053,"journal":{"name":"2002 IEEE Conference on Ultra Wideband Systems and Technologies (IEEE Cat. Measurements indicate spatial correlation lengths ranging from about 2 to 6 inches for both LOS and NLOS geometries. The angle-of-arrival distribution showed discernible frequency-dependent rays of scattered energy and a strong component of narrow angle scatter energy. The LOS link appeared to be limited to about 10 degrees. Subsurface radar can be used as one of the means for non-destructive testing of a reinforced concrete airfield. The numerous pulsed system principles that have been proposed in the literature differ by pulse nature (e.g. monocycle, chirp), by modulation type (e.g. BPSK. PPM with time hopping, chaotic PPM, multi-carrier), or by system architecture (e.g. analog correlation, tunnel diode detection). In parallel with in-depth theoretical studies, the need for a versatile simulation tool is strong. The goal of the simulator presented in this paper is to provide a comprehensive, fully parametric simulator for UWB communication systems research and development. The focus has been primarily put on a point-to-point transmission link, which will be exported to more general network simulators. The frequency dependent decay of the channel gain with increasing frequencies is discussed in some detail regarding the competition between a power and a polynomial law. In the past, several papers have been published, presenting on the one hand the effects of modulation and timing jitter on the PSD assuming random TH codes. On the other hand, papers have been presented dealing with the PSD of specific TH codes without modulation. This paper presents a mathematical framework that enables the evaluation of the PSD of a modulated impulse radio signal using a deterministic TH code.
