If produced in some volume, the cost can be much lower. Coherent approaches will be greatly improved by the use of Photonic Integration, and numerous sensor applications may be enabled in addition to higher-spectral-efficiency communications. Close integration of control/feedback electronics will be desirable in many future PIC applications - it is required for low-cost Optical Phase Locked Loop (OPLL) systems with conventional semiconductor lasers, but efficiency can be high. New high-volume (client) applications may emerge as low-cost, high performance PIC/EIC transmitter/receiver engines are developed - interconnect, computing, sensing, communication, etc. Active integrated Si-photonics is rapidly emerging, and many applications are being explored. Integrated PIC/EIC devices would appear to be compelling, but not on the horizon yet.","PeriodicalId":270552,"journal":{"name":"2012 38th European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communications","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134006562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sub-Geiger mode operation is a technique in which an APD is operated at a bias voltage that is lower than the breakdown voltage. This mode considerably reduces afterpulse probability, and single photons that arrive randomly can be detected. In the present study, we reduced the dark count rate of the sub-Geiger mode single-photon detector by using a low-dark-current InGaAs APD. Consequently, we obtained a dark count rate (DCR) of 5.6 counts per second (cps) with single-photon detection efficiency (SPDE) of 0.2%. Our single-photon detector is comparable in DCR to that of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors.","PeriodicalId":270552,"journal":{"name":"2012 38th European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communications","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121575985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
