Such fleets include production equipment used in manufacturing systems, material handling equipment used in warehousing, and transportation vehicles used in distribution. Unfortunately, most organizations do not possess sufficient maintenance resources to keep the fleet in top condition at all times. Therefore, maintenance managers must make decisions regarding the allocation of the available maintenance resources. This task falls within the domain of selective maintenance, the process of identifying the subset of maintenance actions to perform from a set of desirable maintenance actions. In this paper, we consider a selective maintenance model that is used to maximize fleet reliability, the probability that all systems within a fleet successfully complete their next mission. We evaluate fleet reliability over sequential sets of missions where system maintenance is performed only during the breaks between mission's sets. A combined simulation-optimization model is used to simulate the performance of the fleet over each set of missions and identify the optimal maintenance activities to perform during each break. We use this model to analyze the behavior of the stochastic process corresponding to the number of successful missions in each set.","PeriodicalId":270494,"journal":{"name":"Annual Symposium Reliability and Maintainability, 2004 - RAMS","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127772393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose was to identify the maximum stress locations and perform a probabilistic structural analysis at these locations on the inner and outer liners for given thermal loadings to determine the probability of failure at these locations. The probabilistic structural analysis included quantifying the influence of uncertainties in material stiffness properties and the coefficient of thermal expansion. Results of the analysis indicate that the circumferential component of stress was the most severe stress component and that the inner liner was more likely to fail than the outer liner. Tests of the combustor liners by general electric aerospace engines (GEAE) qualitatively support the results of this analysis.","PeriodicalId":270494,"journal":{"name":"Annual Symposium Reliability and Maintainability, 2004 - RAMS","volume":"221 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133349343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since software is not perceivable in a physical sense, tests of maintainability and reliability are more abstract than those of physical systems. Software design patterns can support analysis of complex software systems by serving as analogs of physical components. In this manner we have developed a goal tree-pattern tree model which combines the techniques of functional modeling and the goal tree-success trees of physical systems. At one level of abstraction in a GTPT, the components of the patterns themselves are available for traditional fault tree analysis techniques. At a higher level of abstraction the individual components are captured in a \"pattern component\" which greatly simplifies the reliability analysis of complex software systems.","PeriodicalId":270494,"journal":{"name":"Annual Symposium Reliability and Maintainability, 2004 - RAMS","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131704656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The corresponding maintenance decisions can influence operating costs in various areas. Due to the typically large costs associated with the critical components of these machines, cannibalization actions are often used to meet pre-defined operational targets, e.g., production capacity. This research is focused on the construction of a closed-network, multi-echelon, discrete-event simulation model that is used to investigate the effects of Cannibalization and other maintenance policies on a manufacturing system consisting of a set of parallel machines. The simulation model is used as a decision-support tool for making cost/performance trade-offs among different maintenance policies or investments. Using a numerical example, we demonstrate a methodology for using the model to recommend optimal spare levels, part shipment policies, and Cannibalization decisions for meeting maintenance investment objectives while adhering to production capacity constraints.","PeriodicalId":270494,"journal":{"name":"Annual Symposium Reliability and Maintainability, 2004 - RAMS","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132979780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This can result in missing failure or degradation conditions that affect customer satisfaction with the product. There is a need for a structured approach to plan the test, engineering metrics and measurement system (instrumentation) on product or system attributes that relate to attributes that affect customer satisfaction. This paper shows how a simple needs-metrics matrix (a common element used in QFD) can be expanded to serve as a structured tool to establish laboratory test instrumentation for objective measurements in a reliability test. It also shows how the matrix can be further expanded to include results of interim subjective evaluations. This expanded matrix can then be used to readily relate the results of reliability testing as well as subjective testing to potential impact on customer satisfaction.","PeriodicalId":270494,"journal":{"name":"Annual Symposium Reliability and Maintainability, 2004 - RAMS","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130754771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Typically their sum total cost exceeds the budget available, so it is necessary to select judiciously from among them. Reliability models can be employed to calculate the cost and reliability implications of a candidate selection. However, there will typically be many such candidate selections, so we employ heuristic search techniques to explore reliability cost-benefit spaces, and visualization to present the results of these machine-conducted searches back to the expert designers to assist them in their decision making. This helps them understand (1) the overall cost-benefit trade space (how much reliability can be attained for a given level of expenditure, and how much additional reliability can be had for a modest increase in expenditure), and (2) the contribution of individual options (when an individual option (e.g., a test) contributes cost-effectively to the overall reliability). The net result is that expert human designers can make cost and benefit informed decisions on attainment of reliability. This approach is demonstrated on data drawn from planning the developments of advanced technologies for spacecraft.","PeriodicalId":270494,"journal":{"name":"Annual Symposium Reliability and Maintainability, 2004 - RAMS","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124950395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The definitions of the measures are based on the conditional probabilities that a component reaches at most or at least a given level of performance. The present paper proposes a new Monte Carlo approach which allows estimating in a single simulation the importance of the various components achieving given levels of performance. This is done by means of properly devised counters for the simultaneous estimation of the system performance when all of the components evolve through all of their reachable performance levels, and of the system performance when the components are restricted to have at most or at least a given level of performance. The flexibility of the Monte Carlo method is exploited to account for the load-sharing dependencies among parallel components. The approach is tested on a sample multi-state transmission system of literature.","PeriodicalId":270494,"journal":{"name":"Annual Symposium Reliability and Maintainability, 2004 - RAMS","volume":"97 8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128001447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A fast algorithm to perform state enumeration in a hybrid form assisted by the polish encoding approach on complex networks to compute the exact s-t reliability is in progress by the authors. The graphical screening ease and convenience of this algorithm is advantageous for planners and designers trying to improve system reliability by allowing a quick and efficient intervention that may be required at a dispatch center to observe routine operations and/or identify solution alternatives in case of a crisis. The wear prediction is carried out using finite element simulation including Archard wear model. The tool wear modelling is presented briefly as well as the response surface methodology (RSM). The study is based on the application of the central composites designs and allows for the analysis of the response (wear) sensitivity of the tool. Important extensions are also presented for the use of such criticality analysis tools for safety and maintenance considerations. In the first part a quantitative measure for estimating the expected level for critical operations of process systems is introduced. Next a systematic algorithm of rating the equipment or events according to an associated criticality index is presented, coupled with a methodology for condition based maintenance for enhancing overall system efficiency and safety. The developed tools and the algorithms are demonstrated via a realistic case study of a compressor system, where (FOR) and (COR) are properly identified for the operable states. The proposed methodology is applied in order to rank the critical parts of the equipment or events, and then to result in the maintenance policy which fulfill certain efficiency and safety targets. While the criticality analysis methodology developed in this work predicts variable information regarding the overall system expected critical operations, the relative importance of the equipment to the process and identification of process and/or reliability bottlenecks, its link to the design optimization algorithm has not been formally established. However, as it is shown via the case study, the proposed methodology could be an efficient tool for the proper balance of preventive and condition based maintenance activities and the prediction of their impact to process operational decisions.","PeriodicalId":270494,"journal":{"name":"Annual Symposium Reliability and Maintainability, 2004 - RAMS","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129361773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
