Burnout syndrome develops as the sequence of emotional exhaustion, followed by depersonalization as a coping mechanism, and which finally manifests itself as feelings of professional dissatisfaction and anguish. If burnout continues into residency and later into medical practice, it will affect the physician’s functioning and quality of life. Interventions targeting unsuccessful coping strategies and complications related to burnout, may offer an opportunity to improve medical student well-being and mental health. In the field of medicine, physicians and residents have been the focus of research on burnout, but little investigation has been done on medical students. This research project is being conducted to assess the prevalence of burnout among third year medical students at Howard University College of Medicine, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) hospital system. This study is being conducted for the benefit and well-being of students; we hope it will better enable us to devise effective interventions to address and prevent burnout in the future studies, which will result in positive outcomes for our future resident physicians.","PeriodicalId":270326,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Psychology & Behavior Analysis","volume":"156 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115423235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The test consists of ten main scales, each main scale having three underscores. The main scales (A-J) have the following designations: Work structure (A), Personal drive (B), Stress-index (C), Decision characteristics (D), Activity (E), Drive (F), Acting (G), Tolerance (H), Social interest (I), Communication (J). Previous studies have shown that the JMT has good reliability (Cronbach's alpha) and good criterion validity (both predictive and concurrent). In an initial phase, an exploratory factor model was developed and compared across groupings (N=12,650). In a second phase, correlations between the exploratory and theoretical factors were calculated. Moreover, the exploratory factors were correlated with job performance ratings (N=258). In both analyses, expected (convergent) and non-expected (divergent) relationships were systematically compared. The exploratory factors were stable with good model fit across groupings. Eight exploratory factors were obtained with an explained variance of about 72%. Large similarities, but also a few differences, emerged between the eight exploratory versus the ten theoretical factors. Correlations between corresponding factorings were high (mean = 0.70). Furthermore, correlations between the exploratory factors and job performance ratings were high (mean =0.36). It should be emphasized that these relationships were very similar to those obtained in previous studies involving the theoretical factors of the JMT. The eight exploratory factors were found to be stable and highly correlated with the theoretical factors. They were externally valid and predictive of job performance.","PeriodicalId":270326,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Psychology & Behavior Analysis","volume":"181 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115197138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous research reported SNS use such as Facebook use may have both positive and negative psychological impact on users, particularly with regards to users’ psychological wellbeing and life satisfaction. To fully acknowledge the extent to which SNS use may affect psychological wellbeing and life satisfaction, different forms of SNS use and experiences need to be taken into account by researchers. There is currently a lack of research investigating how Passive Facebook Use may impact on users’ well being. The present study sought to investigate how passive following on Facebook, fear of missing out, selfesteem, social comparison, and age may affect life satisfaction. A sample of 196 Facebook users (Mean age = 31.16, SD = 8.75) completed an online survey consisting of several psychometric tools. Overall, the results obtained suggest that life satisfaction may be differentially affected by a wide range of SNS-related experiences such as social comparison and fear of missing out. The implications of these findings for the use of SNSs are discussed.","PeriodicalId":270326,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Psychology & Behavior Analysis","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122077782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We investigated the prevalence of cyberbullying behaviors amongst 312 New Zealand University psychology students using the Cyberbullying Experiences Survey. Most respondents reported experiencing (94.9%) and perpetrating (82.0%) some form of cyberbullying victimization in the past year, with men reporting higher rates than women. Men were also more likely to be both victims and perpetrators of cyberbullying. However, the criteria for having experienced cyberbullying of at least once in the last year may have been too lenient. The average scale score for victimization and perpetration suggested a fairly low prevalence of cyberbullying among our sample. Our findings supporting the reliability of the Cyberbullying Experiences Survey were consistent with previous research using similar methods.We suggest avenues for future research to explore the nature of cyberbullying among emerging adults.","PeriodicalId":270326,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Psychology & Behavior Analysis","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133348315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study set out to examine a developmentally informed model that attachment styles, and then temperament traits, followed by character traits would predict parental styles. One hundred and eightytwo women in their thirties, mothers to children three to five years of age, self-reported online on the Temperament and Character Inventory, the Parental Authority Questionnaire, and the Experiences in Close Relationships. A structural equation model was built with excellent goodness of fit indices. Temperament and character traits were significantly predicted by attachment styles and in turn completely mediated the influence of attachment styles on parental styles. All four temperament traits and two character traits pointed meaningfully to the formation of parenting styles. In particular, being high on the temperament trait of Novelty seeking was detrimental to parental maintenance of boundaries and discipline. Being high on the character traits of Self-directedness and Cooperativeness was helpful for authoritative parenting and protective against authoritarian parenting. The current study found that mature personality, characterized by traits central to emotional regulation, goal-directed behavior, and working harmoniously with others, is beneficial to authoritative parenting. These results suggest that interventions to enhance parenting could focus on character development.","PeriodicalId":270326,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Psychology & Behavior Analysis","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129360776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
