In an attempt to incorporate the maximum available amount of information and in the view of the continuously expanding use of GIS, as a tool for analyzing and integrating data, a new software environment called AUTO-SEISMO-GEOTECH has been developed for handling these multi-parameter data. This user friendly package is presently implemented for the cities of Heraklion (Crete islandprovince of Heraklion) and Thiva (province of Viotia) in Greece. The pilot methodologies applied in these urban areas, aimed also at determining a minimum package of tasks/methods needed for the elaboration of a microzoning study, are described and evaluated here. Next, a database with appropriate architecture was formed in order to handle all available geo-information for each city separately and produce thematic maps, such as geological, tectonic, hydrogeological, seismic hazard and microzonation ones. These maps can be easily reproduced, integrated and used for building safer constructions contributing so to mitigation of earthquake consequences. Geo-information obtained by a) existing regional seismicity maps and installation of local portable seismographic networks around both cities, to monitor the microseismic activity and define possible active fault zones, b) geological mapping of the broader urban area in scale 1:5000, c) evaluation of existing geotechnical data as well as new data coming from boreholes, d) geophysical data resulting from surface and borehole techniques, for Vp, Vs and dynamic elastic parameters estimation and e) consideration of historical seismological data for seismic hazard estimation, have been incorporated in this GIS based platform, to be easily handled for further use. The output of this information combined with the dynamic soil analysis produces detailed microzonation maps. Such maps are valuable for city planners and urban designers.","PeriodicalId":268242,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Semeiotics","volume":"194 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124335335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nascimbene","doi":"10.3383/ES.2.1.3","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3383/ES.2.1.3","url":null,"abstract":"In the European seismic countries, the majority of the building heritage was designed according to out-of-date or even non-seismic codes. The lack of considerations about the nonlinear response during the design stage leads to relevant uncertainties, regarding the potential development, location and extension of inelastic mechanisms, as well as their ductility capacity. Therefore, the reliability of the force-based assessment procedure obtained performing a linear analysis is in general questionable, due to the difficulties associated to the correct evaluation of the reduction factor of the internal forces. The direct consequence is the considerable gain in complexity of the assessment procedures proposed in the Italian seismic code and in Eurocode 8. Both codes promote the use of the nonlinear analyses and the displacement-based approach to assess the ductile response. In the light of these considerations, this work intends to furnish useful tools to perform a reliable assessment of existing r.c. frame buildings. In particular, four irregular structures, built according to out-of-date codes, were analyzed with the following aims: i) suggesting simplified approaches and improvements for the assessment procedures, concerning the evaluation of both seismic demand and capacity of the structural members; ii) checking the importance of defining properly the effective stiffness in linear analyses; iii) checking if the conditions to accept the results of linear methods proposed in the two codes are appropriate; v) giving a judgment about the reliability of the conventional 2-D pushover analysis.","PeriodicalId":268242,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Semeiotics","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132432658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The modeling simulates 3-D waves by using the Fourier and Chebyshev methods to compute the spatial derivatives along the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. The stress-strain relation is based on the Kelvin-Voigt mechanical model, which has the advantage of not requiring additional field variables. The model is based on two anelastic parameters and twice the spatial derivatives of the lossless case. The methodology is illustrated by simulating the Messina 1908 earthquake.","PeriodicalId":268242,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Semeiotics","volume":"2 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134453076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, the estimation of vulnerability of buildings is performed mainly relying on accurate, complex models which have to be fed with large amounts of in-situ data and are thus generally capable of covering only a limited geographical scope. This paper describes the first steps towards the construction of a system for producing a zero-level estimation of vulnerability relying in principle on remotely sensed data only in order to untie the evaluation of the seismic vulnerability from the availability of in-situ data, which is extremely scarce and inhomogeneous if one looks at the problem in a global perspective. This is done in the framework of GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems) and perfectly in line with its objectives as set in the GEOSS 10-year plan.","PeriodicalId":268242,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Semeiotics","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125542282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
