Uncertainty of detected phases in relation to integral multiples of 2 /spl pi/ is eliminated using the pair of phases and one of the envelopes of the received signals. High resolution can be obtained since the range is detected based on the information of the phases of the received signals. Experiments were done in air using the frequencies of 180 kHz and 210 kHz, and resolution of 1% of the wavelength corresponding to the frequency of 210 kHz was obtained.","PeriodicalId":268177,"journal":{"name":"1995 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Three cases of high-symmetrical directions are considered. The crystal symmetry determines the properties of the piezoelectric tensor and consequently the wave excitation by transducers. These considerations enable one to ascertain the positions of the transduction centers and the influence of internal reflections on the amplitude characteristics. Furthermore, we are able to discuss the old question \"crossed-field or in-line model?\".","PeriodicalId":268177,"journal":{"name":"1995 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Proceedings. The function of SAW sensors (ID-tag type) is observed as a scaling of time and shape respectively. The time scaling factor is equal to the mechanical extension of the substrate of a sensor for temperature, etc. This scaling factor is evaluated by calculating the wavelet transform. The fundamental concept, mathematical simulations, numerical estimations and finally, an overview of the implemented SAW sensor system using the wavelet transform processed within a SAW convolver are shown. Preliminary results are presented.","PeriodicalId":268177,"journal":{"name":"1995 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Proceedings. The model utilized assumes on the plane surface of a piezoelectric semi-space a layer of thickness d with piecewise constant material constitution. The method relies on eigenequations of the form L/spl psi//spl I.oarr/=/spl part//sub z//spl psi//spl I.oarr/. Our analysis technique provides a convenient perturbative solution of this equation in the substrate and layer regions subject to certain interface and boundary conditions. We validate our theory by calculating the dispersion curves related to waves propagating along corrugated surfaces.","PeriodicalId":268177,"journal":{"name":"1995 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. It is a signal analysis method based on the invariance of ultrasonic propagation under time reversal. It requires the measurement of the inter element impulse responses of the the propagating medium for all pair of elements in the array. A hermitian matrix called the time reversal operator is deduced from these responses and diagonalized. The eigenvectors are then used to perform selective focusing. This method is applied here to phase aberration correction. Experiments with weakly and strongly aberrating medium are shown.","PeriodicalId":268177,"journal":{"name":"1995 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Proceedings. This gives problems when rapid B-mode image display is needed, since there is not time for measuring the velocity data. Gaps then appear in the sonogram and in the audio signal, rendering the audio signal useless, thus making diagnosis difficult. The current goal for ultrasound scanners is to maintain a high refresh rate for the B-mode image and at the same time attain a high maximum velocity in the sonogram display. This precludes the intermixing of the B-mode and sonogram pulses, and time must be shared between the two. Gaps will appear frequently in the sonogram since, e.g., half the time is spent on B-mode acquisition. The information in the gaps can be filled from the available information through interpolation. One possibility is to use a neural network for predicting mean frequency of the velocity signal and its variance. The neural network then predicts the evolution of the mean and variance in the gaps, and the sonogram and audio signal are reconstructed from these. The technique is applied on in-vivo data from the carotid artery. The neural network is trained on part of the data and the network is pruned by the optimal brain damage procedure in order to reduce the number of parameters in the network, and thereby reduce the risk of overfitting. The neural predictor is compared to using a linear filter for the mean and variance time series, and is shown to yield better results, i.e., the variances of the predictions are lower. The ability of the neural predictor to reconstruct both the sonogram and the audio signal, when only 50% of the time is used for velocity data acquisition, is demonstrated for the in-vivo data.","PeriodicalId":268177,"journal":{"name":"1995 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. This algorithm attains the performance levels achieved by existing distorted Born iterative techniques, while maintaining the robustness of the Born iterative technique, especially in noisy situations. In addition, the algorithm has lower computational complexity and faster convergence rate when compared with existing distorted Born iterative algorithms. The authors present numerical simulations of the algorithm in noisy and noise-free environments. They also discuss an elementary experimental setup which is being used to validate their tomographic imaging algorithms.","PeriodicalId":268177,"journal":{"name":"1995 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Following the transmission of a wideband signal, a signal processing strategy which tracks the motion of red blood cells in small regions is used to estimate the axial velocity. A new method for optimization of the coherent signal interval is introduced. The authors also consider the effect of various noise sources on the resulting color flow map. Motion of the rib cage and breast tissue during cardiac systole are shown to display unique features and the authors evaluate the extent and velocity of this tissue motion.","PeriodicalId":268177,"journal":{"name":"1995 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. The positions and weights of the taps in both transducers are obtained simultaneously by considering the finger-by-finger interaction between the two transducers. Two design optimization criteria are compared. A device consisting of two 21-tap transducers with a 10 MHz passband centred at 50 MHz is built on 128/spl deg/ rotated Y-cut LiNbO/sub 3/ to verify the design. We show that the sidelobe suppression is limited by diffraction, which was not included in the design procedure. The response is compared to that obtained by a singly-apodized SAW filter of comparable length designed with the Remez exchange algorithm.","PeriodicalId":268177,"journal":{"name":"1995 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. We construct appropriately defined frequency-scaled Green's functions and show that a function A(|X|) exists such that, say, for the interaction between the k/sup th/ and l/sup th/ substrips in BEM applications the relationship A/sub kl/=A(|a/sub kl/|)-A(|b/sub kl/|)-A(|c/sub kl/|)+A(|d/sub kl/|) holds true, even for the more complicated self-action elements (k=l). The various arguments of the function A(|X|) are related to the geometrical data of the aforementioned substrips. The coordinate-free, frequency-independent universal function A(|X|) merely involves the associated Green's functions, and thus can be tabulated for any material and cut only once. We validate our approach by comparing simulation results with experimental data.","PeriodicalId":268177,"journal":{"name":"1995 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Proceedings.
