The main cause of inguinal hernia is increased abdominal pressure and muscle weakness of abdominal wall. Diagnosis of inguinal hernia is mostly made by clinical examination. Herniotomy, herniorrhaphy, hernioplasty by open operation and laparoscopic procedures is the operative treatment. Material and Method: This retrospective study was conducted in the department of surgery in J.K. Hospital in 411 operated patients with diagnosis of inguinal hernia. Results: Highest number of patients belongs to 41-60 years age group (42.8%). 94.6% were male and 5.3% were female patients. Risk factors included benign prostate hypertrophy (37.9%), chronic cough (18.5%), heavy weight lifting (33.6%), chronic constipation (13.6%), abdominal wall muscle weakness due to older age (24.8%) & previous appendicectomy (0.7%). Less common risk factors are positive family history (15.6%), smoking (30.6%), obesity (21.2%) and pregnancy (0.4%). 69.8% patients presented as indirect, 28.2% as direct inguinal hernia and 1.2% as both variety. 67.6% patient presented as right inguinal hernia followed by left (29.2%) and bilateral (3.2%) respectively. Elective operation (94.4%) is more common than emergency operation (5.6%). Open hernioplasty (96.6%) was the most common procedure. Open herniorrhaphy was performed in few patient (2.7%). Open herniotomy was procedure of choice for paediatric patients (0.7%). Conclusion : This demographic study of inguinal hernia in this region can guide as to better understanding of the trends of this disease.This useful information may aid in the assessment and definitive care of these patients with inguinal hernia.","PeriodicalId":267909,"journal":{"name":"Surgical Update: International Journal of Surgery and Orthopedics","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127664858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of the present study is to compare the outcome of retro-muscular repair over other methods of ventral hernia repair. Methodology: 90 diagnosed cases of ventral hernias were randomly split into two groups A (retro-muscular meshplasty) and B (onlay, inlay & underlay meshplasty). The comparison across groups was carried out in terms of operation length, postoperative pain, wound complications, length of hospital stay & recurrence. Results: No difference was found between the groups regarding age, gender, type and classification of hernia. Operation length was 110 min in retro-muscular repair and 90min in onlay and 114 min underlay method. Statistically difference was seen between these groups. Among complications recurrence, seroma, mesh infection and wound complications were seen in group B. Postoperative pain and well being score were better in retro-muscular group. Conclusions: Retro-muscular meshplasty have more advantage compare to other open methods in ventral hernia repair. Complaints of Chronic inguinal pain is one of the common problem these patients. This study aims at evaluating the long-term outcomes of neuralgia and paraesthesia following routine ilioinguinal nerve division, compared to nerve preservation when performing Lichtenstein’s tension free inguinal hernia repair. Methods: The present study is a randomized controlled trial of 80 cases of inguinal hernias admitted in General Surgery Department in ESIC Medical College, Kalaburagi from January 2017 to June 2018. The patients were randomly chosen into Lichtenstein hernia repair with ilioinguinal neurectomy or Lichtenstein hernia repair with nerve preservation. After surgery, all patients were monitored carefully for pain and paraesthesia. Pain was assessed using visual analogue scale. Paraesthesia was assessed by the monofilament test and evaluated after comparison with the opposite side. Results: In the present study, the incidence of pain as well as the severity of pain is far higher in the nerve preservation study group as opposed to the neurectomy study group. Hypoesthesia is not a significant complication following ilioinguinal neurectomy and does not significantly add to the morbidity of the patient. Conclusions: Prophylactic neurectomy can be an appropriate solution in the prevention of chronic groin pain following Lichtenstein inguinal hernia repair and can be considered as an ideal inclusion into the standard hernia repair procedures. Hypoesthesia is not a significant complication following ilioinguinal neurectomy and does not significantly add to the morbidity of the patient.","PeriodicalId":267909,"journal":{"name":"Surgical Update: International Journal of Surgery and Orthopedics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124515635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The spectrum of colonic diseases varies from benign to malignant lesions, of which the incidence and mortality differ across the world due to differences in risk factors. Colonoscopy is carried out for diagnostic and/or therapeutic purposes. Materials and Methods: It was a hospital based cross sectional study conducted in Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Govt. Medical College, Nanded, during study period of May 2016 to December 2017 on 104 patients presented with clinical features of large bowel diseases. Results: The mean age of the patients was 45.59 ± 18.46 years (range 5 – 95). Males constituted 64.4% patients while females were 35.6%. On colonoscopy most common suspected diagnosis was carcinoma rectum (45.3%), followed by inflammatory bowel disease (26.7%) and rectal polyp (12%). Most of the lesions were found overall in rectum (49.5 %) followed by sigmoid colon (16.8%) and caecum (12.6%). Conclusion: Colonoscopy is a safe and simple procedure helps in locating various lesions in the entire colon and confirming the diagnosis by histopathology. Colonoscopy helps not only in the diagnosis but also in the treatment and follow up of the patient especially in the colonic diseases like colonic cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases.","PeriodicalId":267909,"journal":{"name":"Surgical Update: International Journal of Surgery and Orthopedics","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122612100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its cause is uncertain so as there is a lot of treatment methods for it. Our study compares the outcome of two common treatment modaliy known as local infiltration of steroid injection and plantar fascia stretching exercises with each other regard to decrease pain intensity and improvement in function. Materials and methods: 80 patients with complain of heel pain clinicaly diagnosed as plantar fasciitis are included in the study. Other causes of heel pain are ruled out in them. One group with local steroid injection while the other group was treated with plantar fascia stretching exercises. They are re evaluated regard to function and pain scores after 2 and 10 weeks, Results: Two groups were similar regard to sex, age, height, weight and body mass index .Significant decrease in pain and improvement in function was reported in steroid group but, after the 10th week, two groups reported the same results in those manners. Discussion: It seems that because after 10 weeks of treatment with both therapeutic methods, the results were comparable , it is better to use the less complicated and less invasive method (stretching), but in cases which prompt pain relief and better function is desired, local steroid injection may be better.","PeriodicalId":267909,"journal":{"name":"Surgical Update: International Journal of Surgery and Orthopedics","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130496788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
