Relevant variables in the construction of a machine can be found in the components of the insulating materials and their overall thickness. These components can influence the electric strength and overall service life. In addition, the electrical insulation system dictates the thermal classification and therefore the construction of a machine. It is understood that a thinner insulation exhibits a higher thermal conductivity than a comparable thicker one. By improving the thermal conductivity of the insulation through thickness reduction, it is possible to increase the current density in the conductors. However, with such a design change, the electrical strength and service life of the insulation remains an important consideration. An improvement in the thermal conductivity of a mica tape can be achieved through the addition of highly thermally conductive materials or by reducing the thickness of the carrier components. However, these alterations to a standard insulation often result in a decrease in the electrical and or the mechanical properties of the insulating material. In this paper, a new mica tape construction will be discussed. It will propose that it is possible to not only improve the mechanical and electrical properties of an insulating material, but to also reduce its overall thickness, while improving service life. The new development reduces the thickness of a standard insulating tape by 15%. With this achievement, both efficiency and power output of a machine design can be increased. Power calculations indicate that this increase is considered to be significant","PeriodicalId":267510,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing Expo, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125114979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A Ballard Nexatrade fuel cell, six 2600 Farads Maxwell's ultra capacitors connected in series and a load cell, are tested on a bench and later on a GEM a vehicle. A custom developed DC-DC converter is used to boost the fuel cell stack input voltage from 26 V DC to 72 V DC. The controller performs the ultracapacitor's recharging functions while the ultra capacitors augment for power needs during transients. A very stable operational performance of the vehicle is observed throughout the range tested and the state of charge of the battery is satisfactory. The results show that the test results with ultra capacitors provide a smooth and gradual peak power augmentation","PeriodicalId":267510,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing Expo, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115247032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Designed to perform in parallel with the left ventricle of the native heart, there are only five devices in the United States approved for use of up to 2 years to support CHF patients until a donor heart becomes available, or the heart recovers some function. With limited donor hearts (~3000), fully implantable LVADs are currently being designed for up to 10 years and are a complex medical device with multiple subsystems. The permanent magnet, brushless DC (BLDC) motor subsystem is evaluated for insulation failures using simulations of the electrical circuit model in MatLab (Mathworks). Variations in the number of turns lost and groundwall insulation have a direct effect on the current available to drive the motor. This preliminary model provides results that support the hypothesis that LVAD insulation failures lead to poor pump performance, and potentially, pump failure","PeriodicalId":267510,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing Expo, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128470240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These systems have been rated class F and in most continuous duty applications have been operating at class B temperatures. The exceptional operating performance of these systems also has hampered attempts to introduce new systems with cost effective materials. Due to the competitive nature of HV machines, nontechnical assessments have been made in favor of certain materials despite ample test data. User groups have generated standards specifying materials or process techniques that prevent progress in developing new materials that can withstand higher operating temperatures and stress levels. This paper attempts to evaluate the merits of operation at higher temperature with a system that has been introduced over 15 years, with additional testing conducted over the past four years","PeriodicalId":267510,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing Expo, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129072502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The decompression chamber was made from a glass cylinder with two sheets of acrylic board for the cover and the bottom. The test equipment was placed in the chamber, and the pressure was reduced from 100 kPa to 1 kPa by using a rotary pump. The experiment was carried out on the sample surface by a DC pulse voltage applied between a plate electrode and a needle electrode. The distance between the two electrodes was 6 mm. The frequency of applied pulse voltage ranged from 100 Hz to 250 Hz. The effects of atmospheric pressure and the frequency of applied voltage on the discharge currents have been studied. The fractal theory is used to analyze the discharge characteristics. The fractal dimension of discharge currents increases inversely with decreasing the atmospheric pressure and decreases with increasing the frequency of applied voltage. It is suggested that the fractal dimension can be used to analyze the insulation degradation of polybutylene terephthalate","PeriodicalId":267510,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing Expo, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131967063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
