Extensive tailorability has to be supported by the design of the system architecture. We investigate the value of component architectures for this purpose and discuss several design options for the questions raised by this approach. We propose a model of a component architecture, which supports tailoring activities by changing parameter settings of single components, changing the composition of components, and changing the implementation of components. Hierarchical composition of components allows for tailoring operations on different levels of abstraction and complexity. We introduce the concepts of tailoring constraints, tailoring constructs, and tailoring rights, which allow a controlled evolution of the system. Finally, we show how our approach can be employed to design a tailorable application.","PeriodicalId":265140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth Euromicro Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Processing - PDP '98 -","volume":"123 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-01-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131880036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because the MISIX is a microkernel based operating system, both local communication and remote communication between many servers are indispensable. A local communication mechanism is performed within a local memory, but a remote communication is completed through XNIF boards on SPAX. One of the most significant problems is how to transmit many messages to remote nodes rapidly. We investigate the performance issues involved in implementing remote communication primitives on a high speed network. Experimental results concerning the management of send buffers, the effect of confirmation interrupt, the selection of proper message type, and the management of reception buffers are presented and evaluated.","PeriodicalId":265140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth Euromicro Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Processing - PDP '98 -","volume":"163 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-01-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133466238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An efficient design of such a network is crucial because of its impact on system performance. A routing scheme that minimises contention should be included. We have developed a new method to uniformly distribute traffic over the network called Dynamic Routing Balancing (DRB) that it is based on limited and load-controlled path randomisation in order to maintain a low message latency and avoid the formation of hot-spots. DRB has two components: Static alternative path definition and dynamic path selection policies. We present the alternative path definition and its implementation for k-ary n-cubes and midimew networks, as well as, its evaluation in terms of latency and bandwidth. Some conclusions and comparisons with existing methods are done. Also, the selection policies are described. They are designed with the goals of minimising monitoring and decision overhead.","PeriodicalId":265140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth Euromicro Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Processing - PDP '98 -","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-01-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115479817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ETRI has used the language for the development of switching software. Generally, switching software is characterized by real-time execution, parallel and distributed processing, large scale source code, and high complexity. The software is also developed on cross development environments. In this paper, we present a CHILL cross debugging system, in which the system can test and debug the programs on remote system from local system. The system provides the traditional debugging features such as executing and tracing a program, listing source code, setting breakpoints, examining and setting program locations, and single-stepping. It also provides parallel and distributed real-time debugging, a powerful command language, signal sending capability, and graphical user interface for switching software.","PeriodicalId":265140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth Euromicro Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Processing - PDP '98 -","volume":"292 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-01-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116308038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A discrete-event simulation program in which several objects interact with each other by exchanging messages may have a high degree of concurrency (which can be exploited using optimistic or conservative parallel simulation methods). Dynamic process migration allows load balancing and communication balancing at execution time. Managing the communications involving the migrating process is one of the problems that dynamic process migration implies. To study this problem, which we have called the message integrity problem, six algorithms have been analysed. These algorithms have been studied by sequential simulation, and have also been implemented in a parallel machine for different user process pattern in presence of dynamic migration. To compare the algorithms, different performance parameters have been considered. The results obtained have given preliminary information about the algorithms' behaviour, and have allowed us to perform an initial comparative evaluation among them.","PeriodicalId":265140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth Euromicro Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Processing - PDP '98 -","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-01-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129165682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a system can be orchestrated to perform an application whose subtasks have diverse execution requirements. Subtasks are assigned to and executed on the machines that will result in a minimal overall execution time for the task, considering factors including inter-machine communication overhead. A conceptual model of the automatic decomposition of tasks and assignment of subtasks is presented. Examples of static and dynamic approaches to the matching and scheduling of subtasks are summarized. Some open research problems are discussed.","PeriodicalId":265140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth Euromicro Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Processing - PDP '98 -","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-01-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128173472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to achieve a more systematic approach to low-level benchmarking methodology, we also introduce the concept of the benchmarking frame. Several sets of low-level benchmarking results from current RISC platforms including DEC Alpha, SGI Onyx, and SUN Ultra-2 are shown to prove the validity of our approach.","PeriodicalId":265140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth Euromicro Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Processing - PDP '98 -","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-01-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128919119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such messages can be source of information about the causality relations among application messages which can reduce the amount of control information necessary to guarantee causal deliveries (i.e., a vector of unbounded integer). In this paper we introduce the concept of causal window which represents the range in which all possible causal ordering violations fall. We show that, if an acknowledgement scheme is used, the size of the causal window is bounded. This allows a module implementation of the control information. A causal broadcasting protocol adopting a positive acknowledgement (PAK) scheme using credits is also presented.","PeriodicalId":265140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth Euromicro Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Processing - PDP '98 -","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-01-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125251542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
