Smart Sensor Networks is one of the promising technologies that are catching a lot of attention. In this paper, we propose to a qualitative comparison of several local event (hot spot) detection algorithms in centralized redundant sensor networks. The algorithms are compared regarding their ability to locate and evaluate the event under noise and sensor failures. The purpose of this study is to check if the ratio performance/computational power of the Mote Fuzzy Validation and Fusion algorithm is relevant compare to simpler methods.","PeriodicalId":264517,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2006 IEEE Sensors Applications Symposium, 2006.","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122129087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Binding constants (K) and sizes of binding sites (s) are simultaneously obtained from the dependence of the current on the amount of added DNA in voltammetry. A non-intercalative binder (Hoechst 33258) and two DNA-intercalators (mitoxantrone (MXT) and actinomycin D (AMD)) were examined in the experiments. It was found that the binding constant of Hoechst 33258, mitoxantrone and actinomycin D, were 2.1×10 8 , 8.9×10 9 and 9.1×10 9 cm 3 mol I 1 ; and the sizes of their binding sites were 4, 3 and 8, respectively. An ad-hoc network is the dynamic engagement of a collection of nodes for networking purposes without any intervention of a centralized access point or any needs from an existing/fixed infrastructure. The links of the wireless network are only based on the radio frequency (RF) connectivity of one node to another node. The work was motivated by the critical need of achieving energy efficient networking for energy disadvantaged nodes, such as battery powered remote sensor nodes or handheld nodes. We were interested in developing new network formation methods to exploit the properties of ad hoc wireless networks in energy efficient ways. The proposed approach was based on a dynamic search technique that maximizes the gradient of RF neighbors versus connectivity. Simulation results indicate that the algorithm converges to the intended objective function achieving energy saving of more than 10 dB in average. Future research activities will consider a rule-based learning mechanism for the dynamic search algorithm so as to adapt to new operating scenarios and/or operational need to enhance the overall system performance.","PeriodicalId":264517,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2006 IEEE Sensors Applications Symposium, 2006.","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124979142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To know how much radiation the robot has encountered to replace sensitive electronic parts, a dosimeter to measure the total accumulated dose is necessary. Among many radiation dosimeters or detectors, semiconductor radiation sensors have advantages in terms of power requirements and their sizes over conventional detectors. Among such sensors, a metal oxide field effect transistor (MOSFET) can be used as a dosimeter that measures the total accumulated radiation dose for a measurement period and a diode as a dose-rate sensor for radiation survey. This paper describes the use of the radiation-induced threshold voltage change of a commercial power pMOSFET as an accumulated radiation dose monitoring mean and that of the photo-current of a commercial SiC Diode as a dose-rate measurement mean. Commercial p-type power MOSFETs and SiC Diodes were tested in Co-60 gamma irradiation facilities to see their capabilities as radiation sensors. We found an inexpensive commercial power pMOSFET that shows good linearity in their threshold voltage shift with the radiation dose and a SiC diode that shows good linearity in its photo-current change with dose-rate. According to these findings, a radiation hardened hybrid electronic radiation dosimeter for nuclear robots has been developed for the first time. This small hybrid dosimeter also has an advantage in terms of reliability improvement by using a diversity concept. No such small and simple semiconductor electronic dosimeters with this extended range of dose (~ 100 krad) and dose-rate (50 rad/hr ~ 8 krad/hr) capability and with these levels of redundancy and diversity has ever been found. In addition, a three-dimensional video system will capture the synchronized kinematics of all major body and joint angles. Together, this data permits the computation of joint torques, providing detailed information about the employed muscle groups and their corresponding controllers. They are the interface between microsystems and bio-cells. The ideal interface is one-to-one interface. Though we have been able to establish some sort of interface after so many years of research, it is very crude. Neurons are in millions in numbers, whereas our successfully built prostheses have only a few hundred probes at best. We are still far from creating effective interface. Though we have micro- and nano- technologies, we couldn't build prosthesis with effective resolution. Main hurdles that we have found are the conventional probes that we use for this purpose. In our study, we have found that donut probe promises a better future. It has 33% better resolution and 84% lesser potential drop than the conventional probes. Detailed comparison of donut probes with other probes is presented here.","PeriodicalId":264517,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2006 IEEE Sensors Applications Symposium, 2006.","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122591887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this research, Li-Ion is selected by comparing its properties with other rechargeable batteries and a simulation model is proposed for Li- Ion nanobattery. Inside the miniaturized battery, anode is a multi- walled carbon nanotube array electrode which exhibits high current density due to its broad surface area and its structured electrode configuration. The cathode is selected as LiMn2O4 spinel oxide and nanoporous dielectric membranes made from anodically oxidized aluminum foil are selected for storing mixture of gel electrolyte. Ni is used as a suitable current collector for the proposed battery. The separator and electrolyte container is justified to reduce formation of dendrites and to raise electrode- electrolyte compatibility. Mathematical modeling is constructed in terms of battery mechanisms. Numerous simulations on the performance characteristics have been carried out based on the identified model. These results are analyzed and inferences have been derived on behaviors of the simulated nanobattery, most of which are conducted for comparisons of the physical properties. The scaling law is then used to scale down all input parameters to nanoscale. Via this principle, all input parameters at nanoscale are obtained. It is inferred that discharge time increases for a particular current density with the decrease in dimension. The time of discharge against thickness plot reveals the same situation. By application of scaling law, values of all relevant parameters at nanoscale are obtained from actual values at the macro scale. In simulations, the same mathematical model is assumed and values are scaled down to nanoscale.","PeriodicalId":264517,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2006 IEEE Sensors Applications Symposium, 2006.","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125202681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
