The disease clinically presented as progressive ossification of ligaments, tendons as well as facial and skeletal muscles starting early in life. First presentation is painful localized soft tissue swellings. Articular dysfunction and limitation of movements is significant with involvement of the spine and proximal extremities. Limitation of mouth opening secondary to Tempromandibular joint (TMJ) involvement is late presentation of the disease. Unfortunately, surgical intervention of such condition is mentioned in literature with a very poor outcome. In this manuscript we report a case of FOP presented with limited mouth opening three months after dental extraction. Clinical findings, radiographs, and proposed treatment option are discussed.","PeriodicalId":263229,"journal":{"name":"Oral Health and Dental science","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133943685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The hybrid plates are from titanium Grade 2 which makes them strong, thin, lightweight and highly flexible. This allows that the plates may be adapted to any bone anatomy. The hybrid plate is made of one piece solid titanium without any welds or added parts, the high fatigue strength of the titanium plate is particularly indicated for mechanically demanding situations.","PeriodicalId":263229,"journal":{"name":"Oral Health and Dental science","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114680562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies have shown an increase in the number of drug users with oral lesions resulting from drug consumption and also a lack of knowledge on the part of dental surgeons with regard to the subject. It is important for professionals in this area to have the knowledge needed to diagnose the emergence of possible alterations that can occur as a result of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug consumption. In light of this, the aim of this paper was to identify and describe the main oral lesions associated with the use of crack and cocaine, via a review. For the data collection, searches were carried in out the BIREME, EBSCO, PubMed, and Medline databases, by cross-checking the following descriptors: Cocaine/Crack AND Oral Manifestations AND Oral health, in English and Portuguese. 42 articles were found in the BIREME database, 24 in PubMed, and seven in EBSCO, totaling 73 articles. After carefully reading the abstracts found in all the databases, 12 articles were used to conduct this study. It can be concluded that crack and cocaine use contributes to an increase in the prevalence of lesions of the oral mucosa. The main diseases found in the users of these drugs were periodontal problems, cavities, lesions in the oral mucosa, and the ability that these substances have to cause alterations in the genetic material of the DNA. There was an observed need for dental surgeons to have the knowledge to treat these diseases, since they may be the first people to carry out the patient diagnosis.","PeriodicalId":263229,"journal":{"name":"Oral Health and Dental science","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129263348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The scholarly literature analysis was carried out using PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Research Gate database and it totally involved 60 papers published over the period of 2001-2019. The keywords were ‘root resorption; orthodontic treatment; tooth movement; orthodontic force’. The analysis revealed that development of the root resorption conditioned by orthodontic treatment is a common phenomenon which depends on a number of risk factors that are divided into host factors and treatment method factors. Host risk factors crucial for root resorption in the course of orthodontic treatment include teeth with existing root resorption during pretreatment, anterior open bite, abnormal root shape and teeth undergone root canal therapy. Significant risk factors for treatment methods include longer treatment duration, heavy force applied, intrusion and extrusion of premolars. The paper also presents the biomarkers of root resorption. Apical resorptions which are as a rule not infected are mostly stopped by discontinuing orthodontic forces. Cervical resorptions with a bacterial component require surgical intervention with curettage and restorative build-up of the resorbed area. Inflammatory root resorption conditioned by orthodontic treatment is inevitable, though, its progression into severe stage can be prevented in case early measures are taken and provided that the orthodontist is aware of the host factors, treatment risks and biomarkers involved.","PeriodicalId":263229,"journal":{"name":"Oral Health and Dental science","volume":"521 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122224142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
