The aim of the work is to understand better the microwave backscatter characteristics of vegetation and soils. Based around a vector network analyser, the system uses synthetic pulse techniques to obtain high resolution images. The principles of the technique are presented, together with a description of the imaging algorithm used. Calibration procedures are implemented successfully and the images provide useful quantitative RCS information. The polarimetric capability of the system is demonstrated for both metallic and vegetation targets. The system is a precursor to an outdoor polarimetric ground-based synthetic aperture radar (GB-SAR), designed to be easily and rapidly deployable at widely separated measurement sites.","PeriodicalId":262646,"journal":{"name":"1996 IEEE Aerospace Applications Conference. The approach provides a dramatic reduction in communication bandwidth requirements for speech data by using a two phase process. In the first phase, a speaker dependent voice information file is created to model the speaker. This file is used in the second phase to both compress the speaker's speech at the transmitter and decompress the speaker's speech at the receiver. This speech compression has demonstrated communications quality speech at bit rates as low as 500 bits per second. Current aerospace applications employ standards such as multi band excitation as used on INMARSAT-M (MBE) at 4,150 BPS, as code excited linear prediction (CELP) for the U.S. DoD 4800 BPS STU III system, or the North American digital cellular standard using vector sum excited LPC (VSELP) at 8000 BPS.","PeriodicalId":262646,"journal":{"name":"1996 IEEE Aerospace Applications Conference. DTEMS uses an ER-2 aircraft with an interferometric synthetic aperture radar (IFSAR) and differential GPS to develop a DTM in WGS84 rectangular coordinates with three meter post intervals. This paper describes the DTEMS X-band IFSAR design and presents the results of a system simulation which predicts that, for 45 degree or less terrain slope, DTEMS will achieve an average one /spl sigma/ relative elevation precision of 0.3 meter and absolute one /spl sigma/ elevation precision of 0.6 meter. The ER-2/IFSAR combination can provide up to 190,000 km/sup 2/ of single flight area coverage. With this coverage DTEMS will be able to map the state of California in two flights and the entire United States, including Alaska, in 49 flights. SAR interferometer geometric baseline (IGB) tilt error is the major contributor to terrain elevation error. GPS interferometry (GPSI) and recursive IGB tilt estimation is used to reduce the IGB tilt knowledge error to less than 0.001 degree. The DTEMS implementation of GPSI uses GPS antennas installed on the top of each wing pod at positions just above the radar receiver antennas. In these positions the antennas have rigid coupling to the radar antennas and the 8.5 meter GPS IGB is close and parallel to the 8.5 m SAR IGB between the radar antenna phase centers. Consequently measurement of the GPS IGB attitude constitutes indirect measurement of the SAR IGB attitude.","PeriodicalId":262646,"journal":{"name":"1996 IEEE Aerospace Applications Conference. Genetic Algorithm (GA) optimizers are robust, stochastic search methods modeled on the concepts of natural selection and evolution. The relationship between traditional optimization techniques and GA is discussed and the details of GA optimization implementation are explored. The tutorial overview is followed by a number of applications in which GA has proved useful. The applications discussed include the design of lightweight, broad-band microwave absorbers, the reduction of array sidelobes in thinned arrays, the design of shaped beam antenna arrays, and the extraction of natural resonance modes of radar targets from the backscattered response data. Genetic Algorithm Optimization is shown to be suitable for optimizing a broad class of problems of interest to aerospace antennas and related electromagnetics.","PeriodicalId":262646,"journal":{"name":"1996 IEEE Aerospace Applications Conference. We review various activities in recent years aimed at understanding and mitigating radiation related risk in deploying fiber based data handling systems on orbit. Before concluding that there are no critical barriers to designing survivable and reliable systems, we analyze several possible types of radiation effects. Particular attention is given to the subject of particle-induced bit errors in InGaAs p-i-n photodiodes. Based on the test data, we present suggestions for error mitigation and present a method for on-orbit error rate prediction.","PeriodicalId":262646,"journal":{"name":"1996 IEEE Aerospace Applications Conference. The model accurately simulates the operational performance of the solar array and power control unit, the charge/discharge characteristics of the batteries, and the time-varying nature of various electrical loads. The end result is a prediction of battery state-of-charge as a function of time for a specified period of operations. This allows mission planners to perform operational trades relating to payload usage, and enables more efficient payload tasking without endangering vehicle health.","PeriodicalId":262646,"journal":{"name":"1996 IEEE Aerospace Applications Conference. While tool support exists, it does not always improve matters. This paper presents an approach towards tool-assisted software system testing using a variety of tools for automating tedious and time consuming tasks. We also integrated a new test suite generation tool into the system testing process. The paper reports on the experiences with this testing environment from the professional testers' perspective. Testing encompasses a variety of different approaches, including detailed feature-oriented testing, suspicion based investigation, and random testing. It also includes volume, stress, and operational profile testing. We were particularly interested in how well the new test generation tool performed for such widely varying test objectives.","PeriodicalId":262646,"journal":{"name":"1996 IEEE Aerospace Applications Conference.
