Nano-scale layers of Polystyrene (PS) with different thicknesses were deposited onto the same LPG to test the performances of the device in different operating points of its sensitivity characteristic, drastically modified by the modal transition phenomenon. The physical adsorption dynamic of Biotinylated Bovine Serum Albumin (BBSA) onto the PS surface and the subsequent binding of Streptavidin (SA) on the BBSA layer were recorded by monitoring the variation of LPG transmission dips spectral position. Experimental results demonstrated overlayered LPGs to be among the most sensitive transducers that can be employed in biosensing. Moreover wide margins of further optimization exist.","PeriodicalId":262591,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Sensors","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115956376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Knudsen pump operates by the principle of thermal transpiration which generates a pressure difference along a channel with a thermal gradient, and whose channel height is on the order of the mean free path of air (60 nm at 1 atm). A two mask process using microscopic glass slides is used to form hydrophobic, sealed channels with two heights. Shallow channels (80 nm) are used for the Knudsen pump, and water flows in the deep channels (12 µm). The hydrophobic coating repels water from the channels until a thermal gradient is applied across the shallow channel, reducing the pressure in the shallow channel by thermal transpiration, and drawing water into the deep channel. This pump can be readily integrated into many other microfluidic platforms because it has no moving parts, uses low voltages, and requires no additional materials.","PeriodicalId":262591,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Sensors","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132365106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the proposed method, a mobile robot is used to scan the area under consideration and to collect data on gas concentration and airflow velocity at various locations. The location of the gas source is estimated by applying a turbulent diffusion model of a gas plume to the data obtained by partial observation of the gas distribution in the given area. Discussion is made on the adjustment of the turbulent diffusion coefficient in the plume model to achieve successful estimation under various airflow conditions.","PeriodicalId":262591,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Sensors","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130146703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here we present data showing that our device, the MEMS flux concentrator, does greatly decreases the problem of 1/f noise in magnetic sensors. The device has flux concentrators on MEMS structures that are driven to undergo oscillatory motion at their normal mode resonant frequencies. The motion of the flux concentrators increases the frequency of the field at the position of the sensor to 48 kHz where 1/f noise is much smaller. New modeling results of our recent design are a factor of 30 increase in the percentage of field modulation and a factor of 15 enhancement of the magnetic field. The new design features were using large, stationary flux concentrators that overlap smaller, moving flux concentrators and using the in phase normal mode. Sensors incorporating these features will be able to detect a few pT/Hz at 1 Hz.","PeriodicalId":262591,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Sensors","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134007793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here we report a non-planar target for rapid calibration of inward-looking visual sensor networks (VSNs), designed using a novel VSN simulator and verified experimentally. The target consists of a large central sphere, surrounded by several smaller, rigidly mounted spheres. Rotation about an axis through the center of this sphere changes the location of the outer spheres, while keeping a fixed reference point in the center to permit extrinsic parameter extraction. Using the simulation, different target configurations are tested for field-of-view (FOV) coverage for each camera. Experimental results using a constructed operational prototype are consistent with traditional planar target calibrations, but require only a single view of the target to extract the intrinsic parameters.","PeriodicalId":262591,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Sensors","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131472603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The optocouplers consist of monomode silicon nitride waveguides that optically link silicon LEDs and silicon photodetectors. The light emitters are silicon avalanche diodes that emit light when reverse biased beyond their breakdown voltage. The optical device is transformed to biosensor by spotting the waveguides with protein or DNA probes and by coupling a microfluidic compartment on top to allow for the supply of the reagents and the sample. Binding of the counterpart biomolecules changes the optical coupling efficiency and the detector photocurrent. The analytical performance in detecting DNA and protein molecules both in labeled and non-labeled assay formats is described.","PeriodicalId":262591,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Sensors","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131512685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A material that shows a color change (from orange to green) in presence of organic vapors, is fixed onto a cleaved ended pigtail by Electrostatic Self Assembly method [1]. This way, when an optical signal is guided to the device head, changes in the sensing material produce variations in the reflected optical power. Standard Mono mode fiber (9/125 µm) and a DBF laser (@ 1550nm) have been used. Typically, wider fibers (62.5/125 µm) and lower wavelengths (laying in the visible spectral) are used to measure the effect of color change, but working at 1550nm makes easier multiplexing several optical signals. A sensor was implemented and exposed to saturated concentrations of several VOCs, registering a change in the reflected optical power, especially significant for acetic acid.","PeriodicalId":262591,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Sensors","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130890170","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is of use as a quality control technique when it is important that the superconducting tape has a homogenous current distribution across its width. Superconducting tape is exposed to a magnetic field perpendicular to its surface, inducing currents within the tape. The magnetic field produced by these induced currents can then be measured to assess the distribution of the currents. This paper discusses three techniques to analyze the remnant field in superconducting tape viz. (i) analytic inversion of the Biot-Savart law (ii) computation of the local perpendicular field gradient across the tape and (iii) a least squares fit of the measured magnetic field data to a critical state model. Defects are detected as disruptions to the current distribution calculated for a uniform superconductor. Gradient computation offers a quick way to compare the quality of the samples.","PeriodicalId":262591,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Sensors","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131253054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Suitably biased surface contacts generate in the Silicon active layer an electric field configuration that drives the carriers generated at different depths to different surface contacts. The TFD avoids the light losses caused by conventional Color Filter Arrays (CFA) on top of a sensor and does not need demosaicing to reconstruct the color at each position. With respect to color pixels based on the use of CFA, the TFD offers the possibility of spectral responses tuning, through a suitable change of the surface electrodes biasing. With respect to color pixels based on the use of stacked junctions the TFD offers the possibility of four-color response. In this work experimental results obtained with first prototypes are discussed showing the color tuning capability. The design, and realization of a first mini matrix of Active Pixel TFD in a 90 nm standard process is presented.","PeriodicalId":262591,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Sensors","volume":"152 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132910000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
