By using IMAGe, user defined models can be developed quickly, allowing efficient simulation of even large circuits. To outline the performance improvement and flexibility obtained with our tool, we present comparisons with both simulation results of large memory array and simulation of HDL-A ferroelectric capacitor implementation.","PeriodicalId":262433,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Fifth IEEE International Workshop on Behavioral Modeling and Simulation. It is more efficient in simulation to represent such complex systems as mixed signal systems that both analog description and digital description are adopted. VHDL-AMS is an IEEE standard which is designed to describe multi-discipline, mixed-signal systems. Three port types are supported in VHDL-AMS including terminal, quantity and signal. Properties of a port vary significantly with port type. It is crucial to have a good understanding of these properties which have significant impact on the behavior in simulation. DC analysis is the most essential analysis for mixed signal systems that leads the system to an appropriate initial point for transient analysis. This paper first discusses the port properties of all three port types. Then, the important language features in VHDL-AMS for mixed-signal system description are discussed. A generic model for mixed-signal systems and the criteria that a DC solution of a mixed-signal system is reached is presented. Then, analysis of the interaction between different signal types in DC analysis is presented to explore the common issues in mixed-signal system simulation. Finally, with an interface model as an example, DC simulation results of a mixed-signal system are presented and analyzed. The techniques for modeling mixed signal systems in VHDL-AMS are summarized.","PeriodicalId":262433,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Fifth IEEE International Workshop on Behavioral Modeling and Simulation. These basic physical effects have been used for microsystem modeling and - as shown in this paper - can also be used in modeling electromechanics of macro scale. The reuse of these models from a library of basic effects in other systems saves time and money. This is illustrated through the example of a hard disk drive's electromechanics, i.e. spindle motor and voice coil motor.","PeriodicalId":262433,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Fifth IEEE International Workshop on Behavioral Modeling and Simulation. As the size of designs has increased rapidly, the same simulations have become progressively more difficult to perform, to the extent that the simulations have become less of a design tool and more of a bureaucratic step to be carried out. Behavioural modelling offers a practical route to achieving productive simulation, by allowing what-if analyses, or component variations to improve the design prior to and concurrently with the progression of the design to silicon implementation. In this paper, the positive use of behavioural modelling, multi-level modelling and mixed signal simulation is highlighted, based on the authors' experience during a practical mixed-signal ASIC design project. The benefits and drawbacks of such an approach are discussed, with the key aspects identified that led to the project's successful completion.","PeriodicalId":262433,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Fifth IEEE International Workshop on Behavioral Modeling and Simulation.
