In this paper a lazy variant of FC called minimal forward checking (MFC) is introduced. MFC is a natural marriage of incremental FC and backchecking. Given a variable selection heuristic which does not depend on domain size MPC's worst case performance on any CSP instance is the number of constraint checks performed by FC. Experiments using hard random problems are presented which show that MFC outperforms FC especially for problems with large domain sizes and/or a large number of variables.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":262014,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Sixth International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence. To deal with this problem different kinds of scheduling algorithms have been developed within the real-time community. Unfortunately, these approaches fail when applied to knowledge based systems, mainly because AI techniques rely on time-consuming algorithms with unpredictable, or highly variable performances. To face this problem researchers in AI have introduced deliberative techniques that enable to adapt the way a task is working in function of the available time. For this purpose approximation algorithms of two kinds have been developed: iterative refinement and multiple methods. The model we propose in this paper, belongs to iterative refinement methods. The main advantage of our approach is the capability of designing iterative refinement methods using a general rule language.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":262014,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Sixth International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence. The method is enforced by the syntax of the language and includes the ability to parameterize the rule groups. Drawing from two of three Venus applications developed to date, we illustrate how this form of modularity contributes directly to the resolution of certain software engineering problems associated with rule languages.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":262014,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Sixth International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence. Premission and postmission analyses evaluate performance and provide new strategies for future mission effectiveness. High fidelity on-scene littoral environment descriptions must be available, accessible, and deliverable to mission analysts, combatant platforms, and other mission participants to make prevailing tactical decisions. Knowledge and understanding of dominant variabilities in the littoral environment and their impact on environmental support systems performance and effectiveness are major concerns for tactical decision makers. This paper discusses Coastal Scene Description Project tasks that implement and integrate data assimilation and fusion techniques, expert systems applications, environmental information system visualizations, and shore zone assessments with other tactical oceanography products to create an on-scene state of the environment.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":262014,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Sixth International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence. The final goal of the project is to implement a lingual computer that can communicate and learn, both by being taught and on it own, through use of a fuzzy natural language. New design concepts, text-based architecture and fuzzy-centered architecture, to overcome the problems and limitations of the conventional systems are proposed. Next the problem solving by the three-layered fuzzy inference, and the meta-inference by the combination of the three-layered fuzzy inference and the self-wondering mechanism are described as the natural language processing engine of FLINS.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":262014,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Sixth International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence. Kirschenbaum et al. (1994). We describe a number of fundamental skeleton classes for CLP, and generalize the notion of skeletons to deal with non-structural recursion. Then we describe a range of useful techniques for extending these skeletons. Furthermore, we introduce important classes of techniques that alter the control flow of skeletons in certain well-defined and desirable ways.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":262014,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Sixth International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence. A genetic algorithm approach is used for learning Bayesian rule-sets, in which a population consists of sets of rule-sets that generate offspring through the exchange of rules, permitting fitter rule-sets to produce offspring with a higher probability. To deal with the premature convergence problem, fuzzy similarity measures for Bayesian rule-sets are introduced and the genetic algorithm approach is modified, so that similar rule-sets produce offspring with a lower probability, relying on a sharing function approach. Empirical results are presented that evaluate the benefits of the sharing function approach in our learning environment.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":262014,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Sixth International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence.
