In\u0000 the introduction we focus on the problematic assumptions that “mental\u0000 disorders” can clearly be identified; that they are primarily of biological\u0000 origin; that the world is currently facing an “epidemic” of mental disorders;\u0000 that the most appropriate treatments for them normally involve psychopharmaceutical\u0000 drugs; and that local or indigenous therapies are of little\u0000 interest or importance. We also question the value of “scaling up” mental\u0000 health services, as advocated by the Movement for Global Mental Health,\u0000 and conclude by summarising the structure of the book, with brief comments\u0000 on the various essays.
