The focus is on understanding how ammonia disperses from the onboard storage tank’s Vent Master and the associated toxic zones. Numerical simulations using CFD tools were employed to model ammonia gas dispersion scenarios. The study revealed that if the safety valve opens, the high internal pressure of the ammonia tank could release a significant amount of ammonia through the vent mast. Thus, determining the position and height of the vent mast is crucial for safety design. Simulations showed that even if ammonia is released at sea through the vent mast, it poses minimal risk to nearby residential areas. The vent mast, positioned at least 4 m above the ship’s deck, ensured rapid gas dispersion, reducing the chance of human exposure. The findings aim to enhance the safety design and operation of ships, providing valuable reference material for policymakers, regulators, engine manufacturers, and ammonia suppliers, ultimately contributing to the establishment of safe ship design and construction practices in the future.","PeriodicalId":261809,"journal":{"name":"Journal of International Maritime Safety, Environmental Affairs, and Shipping","volume":"13 20","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140753650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reducing the friction and resistance on the hull of a marine vessel improves the efficiency. It also reduces fuel consumption and carbon emissions in the atmosphere. Researches show that the design of the forward part of the hull has an effect on the total hull resistance. This paper explains how to reduce air pollution from an X-bow ship by analysing the ship’s bow and making essential modifications. The analysis of the front section of an X-bow ship demonstrated how the flare angle and stem angle have an effect on the total hull resistance. The model of the ship was created by using the Rhinoceros software, and the CFD analysis was done in Autodesk CFD software. Based on the results, it was found that the X-bow model of (10° stem, 10°flare) has optimal ship performance between the range speed of 8-14 knots as compared with the original X-bow ship of (6° stem, 21° flare). The new model (10° stem, 10°flare) requires an Effective Horse Power (EHP) of 2847.97 HP which is much lower than the power of the original model,3947.56HP.","PeriodicalId":261809,"journal":{"name":"Journal of International Maritime Safety, Environmental Affairs, and Shipping","volume":"34 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139324327","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The growth of international trade means more ships and more voyages which will contribute to the increasing global emissions inventory. Nonetheless, developments in ship environmental performance have not matched the increase in shipping activities. Several environmental protection and emissions reduction measures have been identified but are yet to be implemented globally due to technological gaps and their capital-intensiveness. This paper focused on addressing the challenges of applying “slow steaming” as a measure of cutting emissions. It demonstrated that by applying analytical models, the optimal berthing capacity can be defined and that by implementing the model, ships can employ slow steaming to reduce emissions. The paper also proposed a collaboration between port and ship owners/companies where real-time information is exchanged to facilitate access and swift cargo operations at ports so that ships can employ speed reduction techniques during a sail.","PeriodicalId":261809,"journal":{"name":"Journal of International Maritime Safety, Environmental Affairs, and Shipping","volume":"41 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139324133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Malaysian seafarers make a substantial contribution to the economic development through their involvement in maritime transportation and their ability to ensure the timely operation of vessels. The assessment of the extent to which the Malaysian Shipping Master Plan (MSMP) has been implemented and its effectiveness in promoting the growth of domestic seafarers reveals a scarcity of appropriate progress. The primary objective of the study is to analyse the impediments to career progression faced by Malaysian seafarers and to provide viable alternatives which coincide with the MSMP’s objectives of fostering career opportunities and professional growth for Malaysian seafarers. A qualitative research approach was employed to achieve the study’s objectives, drawing on expert opinions and secondary data sources. According to the research findings, the government’s implementation of the MSMP was inadequate. Seafarers face significant challenges in advancing their professions, owing primarily to a lack of training opportunities and inadequate government support. This study provides recommendations aimed at enhancing and supporting the development of seafaring careers in order to meet the needs of the maritime industry, which is reliant on seafarers’ competence and proficiency.","PeriodicalId":261809,"journal":{"name":"Journal of International Maritime Safety, Environmental Affairs, and Shipping","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139324501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
