We evaluate the energy consumption in the network during the measurement process and find a transmission strategy, in terms of the transmission power and the packet transmission rate, which minimizes the total energy consumption of the network while achieving certain accuracy in the distance estimations between pairs of nodes. Recent studies have proposed three major sensing methods for WRAN systems, including matched filter, energy and feature detector. However, there are some drawbacks along with them. In this paper, we propose an enhanced energy detector that extends the ability of conventional one to differentiate the primary user from the other as well as the noise with maximum- to-mean power ratio. A novel structure of cognitive radio detector employing the proposed algorithm is also presented to implement spectrum sensing. Even though the current decision is conventionally performed with respect to the past assignments and measurements, interest has recently been focused on predictive schedulers to account on the future (i.e., predicted) channel values for the optimization of the current decisions. This paper provides the implementation for a class of predictive schedulers called P-CBS (predictive CDF based scheduler) as they are based on the empirical cumulative density function of the channel quality. Differently from related works on this topic, here it is assumed that the knowledge about the channel quality is achieved through feedback channels from the users as currently envisaged for Beyond 3G standards. The proposed optimal scheduling approach takes advantage of the estimated CDF from available past values in a predictive way. A sub- optimal (and somewhat intuitive) approach for P-CBS that neglects the optimization with respect to prediction uncertainty is also discussed in this work. The channel is a time slotted joint AWGN and impulsive noise channel in a shadow fading environment. Guaranteeing delay in shadow fading and noisy environment requires the MAC layer to be aware of the application delay requirements and the physical layer characteristics of the wireless channel. One of the important components of the base station MAC is the slot allocation module that allocates time slots to users. Existing slot allocation schemes use linear proportional schemes based on the queue state and priority factor. We develop an optimal slot allocation scheme that bases its allocation decision on the buffer content, the traffic class factor and the wireless channel quality. We specify the wireless channel quality in terms of the probability of connectivity between users and the base station and develop a method of estimating this quantity. Instead of absolute no transmission during bad wireless link states our optimal slot allocation module allots fewer slots in bad link states. The slot allocation module is used in a reservation TDMA base station (BS) MAC to control queuing delay and improve throughput. The algorithms aim at finding the lowest possible transmission power for each node in the network under the constraint that individual QoS demands of all nodes are met. The first direct approach results in a high computational complexity contradicting the intention of building low complexity IR-UWB transceivers. We show how the complexity of the power assignment problem can be substantially lowered by analytical means if the network topology is taken into consideration. A pre-processing of the last received CQI reports is done before the execution of the LA algorithm in the Node-B in order to obtain more profitable channel quality estimations and hence improve the LA performance. Different types of processing techniques are presented and assessed, considering from the simplest sample averaging to some more elaborated predictive algorithms. For these OFDM systems, the elementary pulse has to guarantee orthogonality with its time-frequency shifted versions. However, the time and frequency dispersion of the wireless channel leads to the loss of this orthogonality, producing inter-symbol and inter-channel interference. In order to reduce these interferences, a good localization of the pulse shape is required. In this paper, we investigate the optimization of the OFDM pulse shape for time and frequency dispersive channels. We consider the same envelope functions in transmission and reception. The proposed pulse shape is expressed as a linear combination of the most localized Hermite functions. The optimization, with respect to the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR), is carried out using the Arrow-Hurwicz algorithm. The estimator is based on the tentative frequency offset compensation of nonlinearly transformed received signal samples and on their accumulation in different angular windows. When the compensation perfectly removes the frequency offset, the measurements are suitably clustered and their accumulation, that we call the \"Constellation Phase Signature\" (CPS), is a peaked function of the window orientation. Hence, the frequency offset estimator is obtained by adjusting the compensation so that the peakness of the sample CPS is maximized. The performance of the estimator has been evaluated by numerical simulations. Our proposed adaptive DF algorithm can be used in several scenarios, including MIMO and MC-CDMA systems. In this paper, we focus on the application to DS-CDMA systems and the use of adaptive algorithms for parameter estimation.
