It delivers significant benefits to its host facilities and urban distributed network (UDN) to which is connected. Economic viability of CHP generation for many sites requires integration with the UDN for backup and supplementary power needs and in some case the export of excess power to the UDN. CHP system integration into existing UDN entail installation costs. How these integration costs are distributed will have considerable impact on development and implementation of CHP generation in urban areas. The objective of this paper is to use analytical and statistical methods to develop an algorithm that provide means of determining the optimum capacity of a CHP generating plant that can be accommodated within the UDN, which correspond to Least Cost Technically Acceptable (LCTA) principle, and the UDN long term network planning policy. In order to determine optimal size of CHP generating plant that could be connected at any particular busbar on the UDN without causing a significant adverse impact on performance of the UDN, an algorithm is created that incorporate an analytical and multiple regression analysis model. It is tested using data obtained from ERAC power analysing software incorporating load flow, fault current level and power losses analysis. Additional data needed for effective algorithm creation was obtained via surveys of local UDN operators and planners. These analyses are performed on a 34 busbar network resembling part of the real UDN of Cork city for validation purposes and accuracy of the algorithm proposed.","PeriodicalId":261127,"journal":{"name":"11th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM14)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124401281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a market arrangement that enables simultaneous power exchange clearing and reserve capacity procurement is proposed. Motivation of implementing such co-optimized short term market in liberalized self-scheduling, power markets is discussed. Centralized and sequential market designs are outlined and important properties of co-optimized reserve procurement are presented. We develop a concept of combined energy-reserve offers to be submitted at voluntary power exchanges. Furthermore, clearing rules are demonstrated on examples and we investigate the design from multiple stakeholders' point of view. Also, we find that the proposed design can alleviate the difficulties of system operators regarding reserve procurement.","PeriodicalId":261127,"journal":{"name":"11th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM14)","volume":"129 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128113315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work elaborates on the opportunities and constraints of current balancing markets in the Netherlands and Germany to harness the profitability and feasibility of energy storage systems to participate in load-frequency control and in FRR in particular. One of the main concerns of storage is the state of charge, i.e. availability of discharging or charging energy respectively. Even though firm capacity needs to be provided, the Dutch market allows bids to be withdrawn up to one hour ahead of operation. Therefore Energy Storage System participation in the frequency restoration process encounters limited risk compared to the case of the German system. Furthermore, the Dutch system allows passive balancing, where Energy Storage Systems can contribute in an opportunistic fashion without the need for firm contracts.","PeriodicalId":261127,"journal":{"name":"11th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM14)","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131725454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We focus on the secondary and tertiary balancing market, analyzing the effect of two factors on procurement costs. First, the length of the time period a single supplier has to provide balancing power for. Second, balancing auctions are held well before the bidding period starts, at a time when electricity demand, as well as renewable feed-in is uncertain. Our results suggest that changing the market design, considering early commitment and the length of time period, could decrease inefficiencies.","PeriodicalId":261127,"journal":{"name":"11th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM14)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114769190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such as a market is able to operate in the presence of the capacity excess. However, gradually the power reserve margins have been diminishing causing the fears of the power balancing in the coming years. One of the measures to stimulate the investment in power generating capacity is the introduction of capacity or power markets. Several countries such as Spain, Italy and Sweden introduced such markets in various forms several years ago. The uncoordinated rush for new market forms has raised the fears in the European Commission that new markets may have the negative impact on the competition as well as on the energy policy of the European Union. The paper presents the application of fuzzy sets for the analysis of the requirements for capacity markets and it demonstrates that such a methodology is not only a new approach but also it is the best way for such analyses.","PeriodicalId":261127,"journal":{"name":"11th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM14)","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134284950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The inner core of this platform is intended to be an algorithm called EUPHEMIA, which can be viewed as a hybrid of different existing PX designs. One of the most important contibutors of EUPHEMIA is the COSMOS algorithm which is currently operated for market clearing in several countries. If viewed as an extended version of COSMOS, properties of EUPHEMIA can be put into their proper context. Our paper attempts to examine the most important newly introduced components and the effects of their integration into the COSMOS' framework. Particular attention is paid to possible growth of computational complexity. The resulting model is investigated to find feasible solution techniques and to discuss the expected practical benefits of several optimization methods and softwares.","PeriodicalId":261127,"journal":{"name":"11th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM14)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116290942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem in DNs is differentiated from the respective one in Transmission Networks (TNs), since the former is examined through a technical perspective while the latter through an economical orientated aspect. In this work, DN congestion is established as the problem of increased loading of the DN branches due to bi-directional power flow. The latter is expected to occur when the load demand of the DN is low and the power production of DG is high. Therefore, a Congestion Indicator Factor (CIF) is introduced in order to describe the tendency of DN towards congestion. Based on the CIF values, network reconfiguration is proposed as a real time solution regarding the online management of the DN in order to mitigate congestions. Results indicate that local reconfigurations could yield both congestion reduction and voltage profile improvement.","PeriodicalId":261127,"journal":{"name":"11th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM14)","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123542436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prosumers in the smart grid trade locally produced renewable energy using NRGcoins, the value of which is determined on an open currency exchange market. Similar to Bitcoins, this currency offers numerous advantages over fiat currency, but unlike Bitcoins it is generated by injecting energy into the grid, rather than spending energy on computational power. In addition, we propose a novel trading paradigm for buying and selling green energy in the smart grid. Our mechanism achieves demand response by providing incentives to prosumers to balance their production and consumption out of their own self-interest. We study the advantages of our proposed currency over traditional money and environmental instruments, and explore its benefits for all parties in the smart grid.","PeriodicalId":261127,"journal":{"name":"11th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM14)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130407108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
