Pronounced coherent radiation originating from the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon oscillations of infrared-active modes was observed for all samples, irrespective of the different crystal structures. In addition, spectral dips at the transverse optical (TO) phonon frequencies, which could not be explained by absorption in the emitting volume, were observed for all samples. The model calculations indicate that the emission rate of the radiation into the air to that into the dielectric (semiconductor) side is scaled by 1/{1+(nd2+κd2)nd3} (nd and κd are the real and imaginary part of the complex refractive index, respectively). Thus, the enhanced emission of radiation by the coherent LO phonons and the spectral dips at the TO phonon frequencies can be explained by the respective increase and reduction of the emission efficiency of the radiation to the air due ...","PeriodicalId":260495,"journal":{"name":"Technical Digest CLEO/Pacific Rim '97 Pacific Rim Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115783608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Figure 1 shows the principle of DC drift compensation. When a small amplitude low frequency perturbation is superimposed on the driving signal, the envelope of the modulator output waveform is amplitude-modulated by the low frequency component. Furthermore, the amplitude and the phase of the envelope depend on the change of the bias voltage and on the drift direction of the driving point, respectively. Therefore, compensation of DC drift is possible by detecting the amplitude and the phase of the envelope of the modulator output signal. The envelope of the modulator output signal is detected by square-detection after eliminating the DC components. The drift direction is determined by coherent detection after this squaredetection. This method does not require a wide-bandwidth amplitude modulation circuit in the driving circuit, and can separate the driving signal and control signal unlike the method of reference 2. Therefore, this method is suitable for ultra-high bit rate transmission system. The operation of the DC drift compensation circuit was tested using the configuration shown in Fig. 2. Figures 3(a) and @) show a change in the bias voltage and the bit error rate (BER) performance, respectively. Integration control was used in the experiment because the DC drift of the driven point was very slow. A triangular wave signal with the cycle of about 1000 sec and the amplitude of 0.8V was used as the quasi-drift signal. The driving voltage of the modulator was 4.0V,,,,. The driving signal was a 10 Gb/s 2',-l pseudo-random bit stream. The input power for the bit error rate measurement system was adjusted to where the receiver sensitivity was the BER of 2 x without control. The frequency of the superimposed signal was 20 KHz and the modulation index was about 1%. In this paper, we demonstrate 10 GHz active frequency shift using a high-pressure CO, laser. The experimental apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The main section of the system was an injection-locked high-pressure CO, laser with a gain volume of 1 X 1 X 30 cm’. The laser can operate at a pressure up to 10 atm. Then, the maximum input energy density was 1000 J/t. In addition to a main cavity consisting of a rear reflector (RR) and an output coupler (OC), a subcavity was constructed by the RR and a total reflector (TR). The RR was mounted on the laser tube in order to shorten the cavity length. The lengths of the main cavity and the subcavity were 95 cm and 105 cm, respectively. An A 0 frequency shifter instaIled in the subcavity was driven at a frequency of 40 MHz. The experiment was carried out at around the 1OP (20) line since no dispersive element for coarse tuning was used. Figure 2 shows the frequency shift as a function of the gate pulse width of the PC. The slope of 9.5 GHz/ ks agreed well with the value of 9.4 GHz/ks calculated from the round-trip frequency shift of 80 MHz and the round-trip time of 8.5 ns in the subcavity. The maximum frequency shift obtained was 9 GHz at a pressure of 8 atm. At higher pressures the maximum frequency shift was decreased by the reduction of the gain duration time although the gain bandwidth became wider. In order tu select other wavelength regions, we replaced the RR by a low-dispersive (50 lines/”) diffraction grating. The frequency shift was successfully obtained without degrading the tuning linearity and the maximum frequency shift. “Department of Physics, Science University of Tokyo, 1-3 Kagurazaka, Shinjyuku-ku, Tokyo 262, IAPAN","PeriodicalId":260495,"journal":{"name":"Technical Digest CLEO/Pacific Rim '97 Pacific Rim Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics","volume":"228 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125478124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we use collection mode NOM in which the sample is illuminated under total internal reflection and the evanescent field generated on the sample surface is scattered by a nanometric probe. For characterizing the vertical resolution, a sapphire staircase consisting of monoatomic layers grown epitaxially has been used. The height of the step as measured by atomic force microscope (AFM) is 1 to 4 nm and width of step is 250 nm. In order to characterize lateral resolution, nanocrystals of LiNbO, grown on the sapphire staircase have been used. The average size of a LiNbO, nanocrystal based on AFM is 80 X 40 nm2. For delivery of infrared laser light, hollow-core fibers have advantages of ruggedness, environmental stability, and high-power threshold over the infrared solid-core fibers, such as fluoride glasses, metal halides, and chalcogenides fibers. In this paper, we focus our attention on the hollow-fiber beam delivery system for medical infrared lasers such as Er:YAG and CO, lasers. Since Er:YAG lasers emitting at 2.94 pm wavelength and CO, lasers at 10.6 pm show high absorption to water, these lasers enable highly efficient ablation or cutting of hard and soft tissues surrounded by water. Therefore, these infrared lasers are particularly appropriate for dentistry, ophthalmology, and dermatology applications. Furthermore, combined with flexible hollow fibers, the medical laser sysem that is compact, easy to handle, and cost effective has been produced recently. We review the current status of hollow waveguides that are made of glass and metal, having dielectric coatings for the low attenuation losses. The transmission characteristics and the fabrication processes of waveguides developed by a variety of groups are reported. For example, Fig. 1 shows the measured bending losses of a glass hollow fiber for the Er:YAG laser with silver and fluorocarbon-polymer, inner coatings. The straight loss of the 700-pm bore fiber is 0.2 dB/ m, and when the fiber is bent at the curvature of 10 m-', i.e., the 10-cm bending radius, the loss is still as low as 2.0 dB/ m.","PeriodicalId":260495,"journal":{"name":"Technical Digest CLEO/Pacific Rim '97 Pacific Rim Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129089135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
