In a VoIP network where the carrier is large-scale (numbers of network elements and sites are large), we should be able to realize end-to-end testing mainly by combining commercial products, such as monitoring tools and test-call generators. We propose a system for the end-to-end testing of networks at the carrier level, clarify the technical elements that the system will require and conditions that apply, and describe a suitable software structure.","PeriodicalId":260367,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium (IEEE Cat. The service-on-demand framework delivers two major functions: (1) it allows service providers to create new types of service dynamically through a policy-driven \"service building\" process; (2) it allows end users to subscribe to a service and have their service orders fulfilled in a fully automated, near real time, and \"zero touch\" fashion. We have applied this framework to build an industrial strength service fulfillment system geared towards ETTx access networks. Those networks represent one of the most dynamic service creation environments today.","PeriodicalId":260367,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium (IEEE Cat. The NGN introduces new concepts and networking protocols for the 'everything over IP' strategy. The Softswitch, the media gateway and the signaling gateway are the basic elements of the current NGN architecture. In this paper we show that these elements do not meet the requirements of some SS7 ISUP supplementary services that are widely used in telecommunication networks. The major drawbacks of the current NGN implementations that are based on those services are investigated. To overcome these drawbacks we propose a new element in the NGN architecture, called multi-service mediator (MSM) and describe an interworking scenario with other currently defined NGN elements, especially with the Softswitch. We investigate requirements for controlling and management of MSM in NGN. Additionally we propose a building block for simulation of the NGN architecture, including MSM.","PeriodicalId":260367,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium (IEEE Cat. This motivates a shift to exchanging interoperability knowledge between components at runtime coupled with the ability of components to adapt themselves dynamically to the requirements of users moving between spaces and tasks. The confluence of the service-oriented techniques and ontology-based semantics, as semantic Web services, offers such dynamic adaptivity through knowledge-based service composition. We aim to establish a conceptual architecture for pervasive computing that integrates semantic service composition and policy-based management in providing a collective behavior that adapts to the user's changing needs, but which conforms to the goals of those responsible for the resources used by those services.","PeriodicalId":260367,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium (IEEE Cat. Usage accounting is an essential component infrastructure. It is needed for purposes such as resource provisioning, capacity planning, auditing, and for charging the customers. Though some efforts are underway in this direction, currently there is no standard defined which allows metrics and usage accounting information to be specified in a way that is uniform across management applications. This paper attempts to achieve that by formalizing the concepts involved, through an information model that is independent of the actual metrics used. The proposed information model enriches the CIM Metrics schema with the notions of composite metrics and monitoring records. Further, new classes have been defined to formalize the representation of metering and accounting information. We also describe some applications of the proposed information model.","PeriodicalId":260367,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium (IEEE Cat. To succeed in this business environment, service providers must support the evolution of next generation services and change their existing operational support system (OSS) into a highly distributed, loosely coupled and open-standard based OSS architecture. Also, OSS must shift to include business-oriented aspects. For the NGN telecommunication management, the Telemanagement (TM) Forum has developed a Next Generation Operational Systems and Software (NGOSS) architecture. One of the cornerstones of the NGOSS is the e-TOM business process model. In the service delivery management point of view, in the past, service delivery steps mostly depended on manual jobs and were based on single domain and single technology based-service delivery architecture. This has been a bottleneck, and has prevented flow-through and integrated service delivery in NGN service environment from being realized. An NGOSS-based automatic service delivery system using enterprise application integration (EAI) technology, including business process automation service using workflow, messaging service using a common messaging bus and XML messages, and connectivity service using transport protocol adaptor framework, will allow OSS developers and service providers to quickly automate business processes across the enterprise which are extendable to allow for new services quickly and easily.","PeriodicalId":260367,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium (IEEE Cat. However, it is likely that in the near future there will be an enormous amount of GMPLS network-related data to be managed. Moreover, because a GMPLS network has multilayer domains, one critical issue is achieving separate layer-based operations. In order to solve these problems, we propose a hierarchically distributed network management architecture in which we can flexibly allocate a GMPLS subnetwork to each operations support system (OSS). Our architecture can reduce the burden on all the OSS because of its distribution and can separate layer-based operations on the basis of each GMPLS subnetwork. Constraint-based routing is one of the key policies for managing GMPLS domains. Our architecture enables constraint-based explicit routing in a domain and across domains depending on the policies. We also propose effective operations that add or remove leaf endpoints on the multicasting tree in this hierarchically distributed architecture, and show the effectiveness of the operations in a simulated environment.","PeriodicalId":260367,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium (IEEE Cat. {"title":"Access network service delivery using nested workflow process","authors":"HoJin Kim, Byungdeok Chung, Hoon Choi, Seongbeom Kim","doi":"10.1109/NOMS.2004.1317853","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/NOMS.2004.1317853","url":null,"abstract":"The current issue for the access network service delivery is to swiftly accommodate newly generated service product by way of minimizing the influence caused by the change of the legacy system. Korea experienced the rapidly changing access network facility. In order to follow up rapidly changing environment, network service providers (NSP) have to develop the flexible and cost effective operations support systems (OSS). The service delivery management based on the conventional concepts is difficult to support the proper service delivery of the newly compound and cross-domain Internet services. Because of the severe competition among the service providers, the dense house pattern near the wire center, the governmental support, and the huge demands for Internet usage among the younger generation, the importance of the access network service delivery grows larger. We propose a nested workflow process for the cross domain Internet service with PM (provisioning model). Dividing into several subwork process and simplified master workflow for cross domain service delivery can manage the large scale and complex work into simple work and flow. Access network service delivery can be divided into several main jobs: service order classification, outside plant management, inside plant management, activation, facility service confirmation and send result to billing system. The nested hierarchical structure can balance the complexity and simplification. The OSS for access network service can manage the service installation at low cost and deliver the Internet services efficiently by choose and use appropriate provisioning models for each network models for the Internet service environments. If the automation of the service provisioning and the access equipment activation is possible based on the proposed idea, it completes the service requests for the Internet service installation across the domains in short time. And NSP can satisfy their customers. Moreover, NSP can save lots of expense and complete the service delivery without any physical works just by the automatic service activation of the provisioned access equipment ports on time that the customers require.","PeriodicalId":260367,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium (IEEE Cat. This paper discusses the CHAMPS system, a prototype under development at IBM Research for Change Management with Planning and Scheduling. The CHAMPS system is able to achieve a very high degree of parallelism for a set of tasks by exploiting detailed factual knowledge about the structure of a distributed system from dependency information at runtime. In contrast, today's systems expect an administrator to provide such insights, which is often not the case. Furthermore, the optimization techniques we employ allow the CHAMPS system to come up with a very high quality solution for a mathematically intractable problem in a time which scales nicely with the problem size. We have implemented the CHAMPS system and have applied it in a TPC-W environment that implements an on-line book store application.","PeriodicalId":260367,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium (IEEE Cat.
