Wire-lay construction rope manufactured from 1W81 polyester with SeaGuard(R) finish and Kevlar(R) 29 aramid are observed in this study while experiencing 250,000+ cycles of tension-tension fatigue. The results indicate general behavioral trends. Due, in good part, to the influence of the physical environment, this position data is often very noisy with experienced accuracy being /spl plusmn/50 to 75 meters. Meridian Sciences, a U.S. Navy contractor specializing in navigation refinement, is currently developing a technique which will reduce errors of this magnitude to an error of /spl plusmn/15 meters. As this technique models the inherent errors in all of the system sensors, this improved accuracy will depend on the type and number of sensors used.","PeriodicalId":259593,"journal":{"name":"Oceans '97. The output of the projector has been designed for 10 kHz to 100 kHz operation on an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). The transducer is resonant at 100 kHz but has been designed to deliver high sound pressure levels without impedance or phase instabilities. The transducer features the first successful stacking of 1-3 piezocomposite materials. The selection of the 1-3 piezocomposite materials has resulted in the mode-free sound output while the stacking arrangement permits acoustic operation with twice the sound output at half the resonance frequency of a single layer. The stacking is done mechanically in series and electrically in parallel with the center electrode as the positive plane. Furthermore, the center electrode has been segmented into four individual elements such that combinations of the sectors offer the ability to access nine different apertures.","PeriodicalId":259593,"journal":{"name":"Oceans '97. The baffle is made of three layers: an aluminium backing supports a second layer of highly butyl rubber. The third layer, loaded polyurethane, presents a regular grid of steep shaped cones with a fluid-matching function. The viscoelastic materials are fully modelled into the finite element method using linear integral constitutive relationships. The combined FE-BE algorithm is based on a partial application of the Burton and Miller Helmholtz gradient formulation to overcome non-uniqueness problems. Examples of analysis of acoustic scattering in a range of frequencies typical of underwater communications are given together with a practical application of the structure.","PeriodicalId":259593,"journal":{"name":"Oceans '97. These predictions are based on estimates of local wind and wave conditions and, since there are uncertainties associated with these estimates the search area grows rapidly with time, and often within a few hours the area may be far larger than can be effectively searched by available aircraft and ships. This paper describes the development of a new tool for maritime search and rescue (SAR) activities, called a self locating datum marker buoy (DMB). It comprises an air deployable buoy that drifts with the same trajectory as a life raft (primarily driven by the wind) or as a person in the water (primarily driven by the surface current) depending on the configuration chosen prior to deployment. The buoy contains a GPS receiver and an ARGOS satellite transmitter so that it is able to relay near real-time position data to a rescue coordination center, and thus allows the search activities to be directed in a more focused, and successful manner. The development of the buoy is discussed in the paper, results of drift validation trials in conditions of high winds and currents are presented, and the impact of DIME data on search area predictions is shown.","PeriodicalId":259593,"journal":{"name":"Oceans '97. A number of homing technologies have been proposed and tested, with acoustic homing generally the most prevalent. Accurate acoustic homing requires systems with high update rates, and extensive signal conditioning if AUV orientation is required, as well as, bearing and distance to the dock. Vehicle orientation becomes increasingly important in the final stages of the docking, as large changes in orientation near the dock are impractical and often not possible. An electromagnetic (EM) homing system is one alternative that can provide accurate measurement of the AUV position and orientation to the dock during homing. This system offers inherent advantages in defining the AUV orientation, when compared to high frequency acoustic systems. The design and testing of an EM homing system is given, with particular attention to one can be adapted to a wide class of AUVs. The EM homing system consists of a dock with EM coils that provide the homing signal, and set of sensing coils that are mounted in the AUV. The present tests used the MIT Sea Grant Program Odyssey AUV as the test vehicle. A number of homing, docking and latching trials were successfully performed with the design. Homing data include dead reckoning computation and acoustic tracking of the homing track, and video documentation of homing into the dock.","PeriodicalId":259593,"journal":{"name":"Oceans '97. The authors have carried out wind tunnel experiments on wind forces of friction forces, wind direction effects and effects of corners. Depending on results of experiments, they have investigated the way to estimate wind forces acting on huge pontoon type floating structures. In this estimation, effects of boundary layer, corners, friction forces and wind fluctuation are included. The way of the estimation is that, at first they calculate steady friction force and pressure force respectively, and next by using these steady forces and calculated aerodynamic admittance, fluctuating forces can be calculated. From results of estimation, as the size of structure grows, the ratio of friction force becomes large and fluctuation component becomes very small because the wind fluctuation is spatially averaged.","PeriodicalId":259593,"journal":{"name":"Oceans '97. Oceanic and geoacoustic variabilities introduce random fluctuations into the fields, for which an important characteristic is the spatial coherence. The spatial coherence of the acoustic field is described by the correlation function of the field. Results from a careful investigation are described of the sensitivity of the correlation function to variations in parameters of shallow water propagation. Parameters of particular interest are range and frequency. In order to demonstrate key sensitivities, stratified environmental models are used. The models include one or more sediment layers. Variability in the environment is assumed to arise from small random fluctuations in sound speed throughout the layer and at layer interfaces. Formulas based on a perturbation treatment of the Helmholtz equation are used.","PeriodicalId":259593,"journal":{"name":"Oceans '97. Landsat Thematic Mapper and SPOT satellite image data have been used in a qualitative manner to map the spatial characteristics of tropical reef systems. Recently, data available for shallow corals have been studied to determine a \"Living Madrepora Index\" that may form the basis for quantitative analysis of ecosystem viability. This may be of particular importance in studies of coral bleaching events that may be caused by climate variability or change, and/or pollutant stress. The challenge is to adjust the digital imagery for the optical attenuation through water to greater depths with corrections that will vary with the density of intervening sediment or plankton. In this paper the authors report on a study in Fiji in which they measured the vertical profiles of the diffuse attenuation coefficient for upwelling radiance in the SeaWiFS channels. They discuss the properties of these coefficients and derivation of an image independent procedure for retrieval of the bottom upwelling radiance without correction for depth.","PeriodicalId":259593,"journal":{"name":"Oceans '97.
