These parameters are useful to detect the morphotectonic indicators of Shatt Al-Arab basin. Five cross sectional profiles were considered from the previous bathymetrical surveys of Shatt Al-Arab channel starting from Qurna (upstream) at the confluence of Tigris and Euphrates rivers towards Fao (downstream). The results illustrated the main rate of controlling the tectonic activity along the river channel by forming of islands bar at the middle of main river course and increasing in its meanders. The applied analytical technique also efficient in detecting the neotectonic activities for subsurface structures and their effects on deflecting and meanders of the river basin. \u0000

For water sampling three stations along Shatt Al-Arab River were selected as follows: 1) discharging point in Shatt Al-Arab from Basrah paper and mill industries, 2) Karmatt Ali Bridge, and 3) Siba downstream to the southern region of Shatt Al-Arab river. After the formation of a complex with Schiff Base, Cobalt and Copper in the water of Shatt Al-Arab were determined spectrophotometricaly at wave length of 270 nm and 295 nm respectively. It is found that cobalt concentrations were (0.152, 0.174, 0.165) mg.l-1 and copper concentrations were (0.014, 0.021, 0.023) mg.l-1 in stations 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The method is reliable with sensitivity, accuracy, standard deviation and detection limit of (0.0235 gm.cm.l-1, 3.05×10-6, 0.00184, 0.52×10-7) for cobalt complex and (0.0135 gm.cm.l-1, 3.31×10-6, 0.00215, 0.6×10-8) for copper complex, respectively. \u0000

The species of molluscs were the snails, Lymnaea auricularia, Theodoxus jordani, Physa acuta, Melanopsis nodosa, Melanoides tuberculata while the bivalves were Corbicula fluminea and Corbicula fluminalis. The molluscs were collected from different locations of Shatt Al-Arab river (along the region extended from Abu-Al-Khasib to Garmat-Ali) during 2004 and 2005. Each species consisted of at least 350 adults of uniform size of individuals. The n-alkanes compounds from species of molluscs were extracted and analyzed by high resolution capillary gas chromatography. The total concentrations of n–alkanes in the molluscs varied from 1.50 μg/g dry weight in the T. jordani to 8.78 μg/g dry weight in the C. fluminea during summer and from 2.26 μg/g dry weight to 12.37 μg/g dry weight during autumn. While ranged from 3.15 μg/g dry weight to 12.44 μg/g dry weight and from 1.78 μg/g dry weight to 5.31 μg/g dry weight during winter and spring. The study confirmed lower concentrations of n-alkanes compounds in the molluscs of Shatt Al-Arab river during summer and spring while higher concentrations were recorded during winter and autumn. This is due to several factors which could act to produce such seasonal variations. \u0000

Ecological indices increase for the studied key biological groups in 2006 in the three monitored marshes in comparison with that of 2005. Ecological indices of macrophytes and waterfowls assemblages increase steadly from 2005 towards 2007. On the contrary macroinvertebrates and fishes suffer severe decline in 2007 mainly due to reduced water level. Continuous improvement in ecological indices of macrophytes and waterfowls in two of the restored marshes indicated that reduced water level was less harsh to them than to the other two groups. In spite of the slow recovery in ecological indices in the monitored marshes, diversity and richness values fluctuated between poor to moderate status and semi-integrated to disturbed, respectively. Cases of poor status and disturbed were more common and limited good ones were noticed. Most evenness values indicated absence of dominance cases, except two below the acceptable limit (0.5) were scored both were during 2007. What is clear is that the yearly hydrological period plays a major role in manipulating the biodiversity and repercussion ecological indices in the Southern restored marshes. Lower values of ecological indices indicated that the environment of Southern marshes still disturbed and need more time and care to be fully restored. \u0000 \u0000

The mean concentrations of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPHs) in the water were 81.07 µg/l at ammonia unit, 153.69 µg/l at urea unit and 8.89 µg/l at water treatment plant. The mean values of TPHs in the sediment were 129.46µg/g at ammonia unit, 406.68 µg/g at urea unit and 48.97µg/g at water treatment plant. The range of trace metals concentrations (mg/l) for water samples were 480.13-620.12 for Fe, 280.23-400.26 for Mn, 3.28-10.23 for Cu, 18.23-31.28 for Zn, 3.26-9.23 for Pb, 0.23-1.05 for Cd and 6.25-10.21 for Co. The range of these measured metals concentrations in µg/g for sediment samples were 632.18-980.45 for Fe, 280.23-400.26 for Mn, 9.26-16.53 for Cu, 30.12-51.24 for Zn, 23.41-30.23 for Pb, 0.62-1.52 for Cd and 20.21-32.42 for Co. The results have been compared to other international and local values. The geochemical index values for studied metals excluded Fe and Cd in the sediments of the three stations exhibited class 2 and hence are moderately polluted. Station (2) was the highest in the geochemical index. All the sampling locations have an enrichment factors values greater than 5 except location (1) for Cd and location (3) for Zn. The sediments from the studied locations fall under the category of low for Fe, moderate for Zn and Cd expect location (2) which showed a contamination factor (CF) of 4, marginally falls under considerable degree of contamination and considerable to very high contamination for the rest metals. All sediment samples with pollution index greater than 1 showed pollution caused by industrial processes of Fertilizer Plant.

A satisfactory site for constructing fishponds is that where the soil is very deep with neutral pH, weather infiltration is very low; mineralization of organic matter takes place rapidly. The present study was carried out to assess different soil parameters in different aged ponds and to find out the relationship between different aged ponds with different bottom soil parameters. Three groups of ponds (1-5 years, 6-10 years and above 10 years) were analyzed. There was no significant change of soil pH among different aged ponds. Significant variations were observed in textural compositions of different aged group pond’s soil. Mean percentages of clay and silt were found to be increasing with the increase of pond’s age. Amount of organic matter and organic carbon also increased sharply with the increasing of pond’s age. No significant variation were found from different aged group ponds for soil pH but the amount of organic matter, organic carbon, silt and clay were significantly increased with the increasing of pond age that may deteriorate the quality of pond’s bottom soil.

The oval shaped olfactory rosette was comprised of 24-26 lamellae of different sizes on each side of the median raphe. Histologically each lamella was composed of two layers of olfactory epithelium separated by narrow central core which made up of loose connective tissues, nerve fibres and blood vessels. The sensory olfactory epithelium contained principally three types of receptor cells: primary, secondary and microvillous cells. The non-sensory epithelium was typified with a series of mucous cells, stratified epithelial cells and mast cells. Basal cells were situated at the base of the epithelium, adjacent to the central core. Various cells on the olfactory epithelium were correlated with their functional consequence of fish concerned.

It was established to reduce flood and drain the excess water during the flood seasons, as a canal alternative to Shatt al-Arab during the Iran-Iraq war. It delivers water to the Zubair area and Al Faw town for agricultural purposes. A deterioration of the water quality of the canal was occurred due to many reasons; most importantly was the close of the canal at the junction of Garmat-Ali which is affected by the semidiurnal rhythm of the Arabian Gulf. There is a regulator located at about 22 km from the head of the canal. The main purpose of the canal is to control water drainage during flood and mitigating the effects on both sides land. In this paper the canal was simulated by the existence of controlled barrage on the water way, closed during the flood tide time and opened at the ebb tide. The simulation results after calibration of the mathematical model with field measurements, matched with high accuracy. The tidal effects on the canal can be determined, and the rehabilitation of the canal and water management in the surrounding areas can be preformed. The results indicate the sensitivity of the mathematical model to predict the measurements of water level, volume of water, flow speed of the current, discharge, downstream and upstream direction of discharge and the effect of tidal range at any point along the canal at the closure and opening of the regulator

Crude extracts were prepared using the solvent methanol and evaluated for antibacterial activity by well diffusion method against both Gram negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris and Klebsiella pneumoniae) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis). The crude methanolic extract of U. lactuca inhibited the growth of all the test organisms except E. coli. Seaweed extract of E. compressa was found to be effective against two of the examined bacteria. Algae belonging to Chlorophyta showed higher antibacterial activity than other members of the algae tested in the present investigation. The methanol extracts of brown and red algae did not show any significant effect on the growth of tested bacteria. E. coli was resistant to all the extracts. Results of the present study confirmed the potential use of seaweed extracts as a source of antibacterial compounds.
