The considered frame has twenty percent scrap-tyre rubber (crumb) replacing fine aggregates. A one-third reduced scale model of a two-storey single-bay frame was fabricated using the mix ratio of 1:1.68:1.72 (cement: sand: aggregate) and water/cement of 0.48, replacing twenty percent of fine aggregates via waste rubber (crumb) by volume. The model frame was subjected first to a free vibration test for evaluation of dynamic characteristics (frequency/period, elastic viscous damping). It was subjected to simulated multiple base excitations using 1994 Northridge earthquake time history for the evaluation of seismic response parameters (ductility factor, overstrength factor, and response modification factor). Seismic response curve (lateral displacement versus peak base acceleration) was developed for the model to assess the viability of crumb in concrete in areas of active seismicity. The fundamental period of vibration and damping were calculated as 0.75 sec and 10.85 percent, respectively using records of free vibration tests. The ductility, overstrength and response modification factors, and maximum acceleration resisted were computed using multiple base excitations which came out to be 3.10, 2.16, 6.70 and 0.72g, respectively.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132083219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model is obtained by compounding the Gumbel type-II and Burr-XII distributions. Basic mathematical properties of the new distribution were studied including the quantile function, ordinary and incomplete moments, moment generating function, order statistics, Rényi entropy, stress-strength model and stochastic ordering. The parameters of the proposed distribution are estimated using the maximum likelihood method. A Monte Carlo simulation was presented to examine the behaviour of the parameter estimates. The flexibility of the proposed model was assessed by means of three applications.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124306416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Seismic response of the structure under non-uniform excitation of ground motion is different from that under uniform excitation on upper embedding end or lower embedding end. Sites with the same height difference and different soil conditions were set up in this paper to subject them to ground motions related to different positions and the seismic response of structures built on the sites under uniform and non-uniform strong seismic excitation were compared. The results show that the predominant period and amplitude of ground motions on upper embedding end and lower embedding end are different and affected by soil conditions. The extent and law of amplification of shear force, displacement and storey drift of structures under non-uniform excitation differ from those under uniform excitation when soil changes from soft to medium-hard soil. In addition, the position and degree of plastic hinges change under non-uniform excitation compared to uniform excitation. The uniform excitation using the ground motion on the upper embedding end is not always safe for the frame structure supported by foundations at different elevations.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123504559","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An SFT is a massive cylindrical structure that floats at a certain depth below the water surface and subjected to extreme environmental conditions, such as waves, tsunamis and earthquakes. The seismic assessment of SFT supported by mooring cables, under multi-support seismic excitations needs to be evaluated in more detail. The time domain dynamic problem of SFT moored by inclined mooring cables/anchors is formulated and the geometric non-linear dynamic analysis of SFT subjected to hydrodynamic and seismic excitations is performed in this paper. The prototype of SFT to be constructed in Qindao Lake of China is analysed under multi-support seismic excitations. It was found that due to the fluid environment and flexible cables the effective seismic forces are dissipated well and SFT is stable under the spectrum compatible ground motions. However, the lateral component of seismic excitations produce larger responses compared to longitudinal one and may be critical for other case studies.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123650886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More than twenty seismically isolated buildings exist in Peru, at present. Seismic isolators in many of these buildings have been designed using foreign codes developed for foreign seismic conditions in the absence of local design code. These conditions may not accurately represent Peruvian seismicity. The mandatory use of seismic isolators in new major hospital buildings has been established recently in the Peruvian seismic design code. Available studies in Peru indicate that most health centres may be temporarily affected after a rare seismic event. The seismic isolation Peruvian code is being developed taking into account the needs and implications of Peruvian seismicity. This paper presents the design procedure of the seismic isolation system of a representative four storey reinforced concrete hospital block. The requirements of the draft code for seismic isolation and the current seismic code have been used. The design process and verification show reasonable response of the structure in terms of drifts and acceleration even after including maximum and minimum modification factors of properties for the seismic isolation bearings.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117179278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents the analysis of different connecting body design schemes based on a 202.15 m (663 ft) twin-tower ultra-high-rise structure connected by a connecting truss. The influence of height and type of connection on the entire building structure was studied by comparing storey shear forces and drift of structure. The results indicated that the connection type between the connecting body and main structure has little influence on the building structure performance. Finite element analysis of the connecting body indicated that the internal force characteristic of rigid connection type is better compared to the hinge connection type. Furthermore, the connecting truss design based on inclined braces connected by hinge joint is superior compared to the rigid joints.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115245794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The city was declared World Heritage by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1991. The modeling and analysis of the building was carried out using a three-dimensional elastic tetrahedral finite elements model which was subjected to probabilistic seismic demands with recurrences of 500 yrs and 1000 yrs in addition to real seismic records. The model was able to correctly identify cracking pattern in different parts of the temple due to gravitational forces. High seismic vulnerability of the arched window and the walls of the middle part of the bell tower of the temple was indicated by the seismic analysis of the model.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124324366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An original parametric finite element model has been developed in order to perform sensitivity analyses. The model considers the design variables affecting the racking load-carrying capacity of the wall. These variables include aspect ratio (height-to-width ratio), fastener spacing, number of vertical studs and framing elements cross-section size. A failure criterion has been defined based on the observation of both the global behaviour of the wall and local behaviour of fasteners in order to identify the ultimate displacement of the wall. The equivalent viscous damping has been numerically assessed by estimating the damping factor which is in use in the capacity spectrum method. Finally, an in-depth analysis of the results obtained from the sensitivity analyses led to the development of a simplified analytical procedure which is able to predict the capacity curve of a timber light-frame shear wall.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123194110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A parametric study was conducted by designing a set of bridges for three different soil types and varying the number of spans, span lengths, and pier heights. The seismic responses (acceleration, displacement and pier seismic forces) were evaluated for two structural models. The first model corresponded to the bridges supported on elastomeric bearings with linear elastic behaviour and the second model simulated a base isolated bridge that accounts for the nonlinear behaviour of the system. The seismic demand was represented with a group of twelve real accelerograms recorded on the subduction zone on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. The nonlinear responses under different damage scenarios for the bridges included in the presented study were estimated. These results allow determining the seismic capacity of the bridges with and without base isolation. Results show clearly the importance of considering the nonlinear behaviour on the seismic performance of bridges and the influence of base isolation on the seismic vulnerability of medium size bridges.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"101 38","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131942684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the effectiveness of these has been shown by the experimental testing carried out worldwide, many aspects still need to be investigated for further improvement and optimisation. A thermo-mechanical model of a double friction pendulum device (based on the most recent modelling techniques adopted in multibody dynamics) is presented in this paper. The proposed model is based on the observation that sliding may not take place as ideally as is indicated in the literature. On the contrary, the fulfilment of geometrical compatibility between the constitutive bodies (during an earthquake) suggests a very peculiar dynamic behaviour composed of a continuous alternation of sticking and slipping phases. The thermo-mechanical model of a double friction pendulum device (based on the most recent modelling techniques adopted in multibody dynamics) is presented. The process of fine-tuning of the selected modelling strategy (available to date) is also described.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115580066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
