Both soils are designed with three variables namely DSM column diameter (D), DSM column length (L) and centre-to-centre distance of the DSM columns (s). The settlement values under the road embankment constructed with and without DSM columns were obtained by numerical analysis. The analyses were also repeated for the DSM columns which were stiffened by adding I-profiles. The results showed that the improvement effect of the DSM columns on settlement is higher in soft clay. For constant improvement area ratio (ar), the maximum improvement is achieved for D = 80 cm (2.62 ft.) and increasing D did not affect the degree of improvement. In both soil types, settlement decreased with increasing L within the weak soil zone. Increasing L into the comparatively stronger soil did not significantly affect the settlement value. Although the settlement decreased with increasing ar in silty loose sand, it reached at maximum in soft clay at ar of thirty-five percent and was not affected thereafter with increasing ar values.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"60 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139602373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effects of graphene-concrete composite on the properties of concrete have been investigated in this paper. A mix with a water-to-cement ratio of 0.4 was designed. The graphene powder was introduced as 0.5 percent, one percent, one-and-a-half percent and two percent (designated as GC2). The control mix was prepared without mixing the graphene powder. The same size and type of aggregates were used for all these concrete mixes. For each mix, resistance to acid (H2SO4) and sulphate (Na2SO4) attacks, compressive strength, water absorption, compressive strength development over time, compressive stress-strain relationship, split tensile strength, and modulus of rupture were determined. It was found that the addition of graphene increased the acid and sulphate resistance, and absorption. The acid resistance of concrete improved for all the employed mixes. The highest improvement was achieved for the GC2 mix. On the other hand, an overall decrease in water absorption of the mixes was noticed. Moreover, the addition of graphene increased the bulk and apparent density of the mix and decreased the volume of permeable voids.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129831973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents an alternative method for the analysis of system stability phenomena. The analysis is conducted by using a new method which is called the change of state philosophy. The phenomenon is considered as the change in the state of the system in this method. The basic principle in the formulation is the use of an equation in which the product of the key parameter of the system and its inverse is set equal to 1. Logical reasoning and mathematics principles are used to explicitly derive the basic theory. The results are presented as the Persian curve which is a super function of the state functions. The accuracy of the proposed method has been verified by using several examples related to the ultimate strength analysis of structural systems. The state functions are defined as explicit functions of the state variable. The state variable is an identification parameter of the system.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114853448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, Liberia lies within a suitable zone for solar energy utilisation for photovoltaic applications, as its climate is relatively hot all year round. This paper investigates the use of the artificial neural network to model the reliability of solar radiation in a study area in Liberia, as a necessary prerequisite for alternative power generation. Seven variables (longitude, latitude, elevation, average temperature, precipitation, wind speed and relative humidity) were used as input data (causal variables) and one parameter/factor (solar radiation) was used as output (response variable) for\u00002000-2018. The obtained results showed that the employed model explains all the variabilities of the response data around the mean with an overall regression value of 0.93. It was found through visualised maps that the study area is in a suitable spot for the utilisation of solar energy potentials.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114683512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents details of predictive analytics for house pricing in three different towns of Karachi, Pakistan according to different living standards based on machine learning (ML) methods. The purpose of this study is to determine which data set features contribute greatly to the accuracy of the predictions when experimenting with selected predictive techniques. The house price value has been analysed using five different ML methods. A model selection has been made by comparing the accuracy of the techniques based on some performance metrics and the best technique was used to predict the house price value.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115445556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two new proposals have been presented to analyse such systems: a direct crack identification method to obtain the crack properties and a theoretical margin of detection parameter to quantify the capability of the theoretical model used to detect a single crack. The direct crack identification method uses first three natural frequencies of a cracked beam to obtain the unknown crack location and depth without solving the inverse vibration problem. On the other hand, the theoretical margin of detection parameter provides capability to the analytical model to detect the location and depth of an open crack using the first three natural frequencies as a function of crack location and depth for different end conditions. To show the robustness of the direct crack identification method, errors on the first three exact values of the natural frequency parameters of the cracked beam are induced before applying the proposed method and the resulting errors were calculated. Contour plots have been developed for classical and elastically restrained end conditions to predict the detectable zones as a function of crack location and depth. The proposed analysis has been carried out on the widely used closed-form solution of the beam model.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115001801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The curve provides an alternative of probability functions to define the state of a system. The Persian curves are super functions of the state variable which includes state functions and two control parameters. The state variable is a scaled identification parameter of a system. The state functions are two specific functions of the state variable. The control parameters are determined from the real-world data. Since the Persian curve has the basic properties of the probability function, it is called the Persian probability function. It is concluded that all natural phenomena are certain and the lack of knowledge has led the humans to divide the phenomena into certain and stochastic categories. The proposed Persian curve was validated by analysing the probability data from different fields of study.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130789039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Flexural retrofitting of one-way and two-way RC flat slabs using five common arrays of carbon FRP (CFRP) strips has been investigated in this paper. A comparison of the obtained results provided optimum scheme. Finite element method has been used to conduct the study using a commercial computer program. Results from the numerical analyses suggest that the use of CFRP sheets leads to improved load bearing capacities of slabs, which depends on both the type of array and the widths of FRP strips. The most optimal array of the retrofitting material (considering the effects on both strength and deflection) is the cross-like condition, which increases the capacities for one- and two-way slabs, respectively, by thirty-four percent and thirty percent while decreasing their maximum deflection by ten percent and four percent, respectively.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"94 30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129085809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An algorithm was developed to employ sun-tracking method, which provides the characteristic angles of the heliostats such that the incoming beams of sun rays are reflected to the receiver. A suite of MATLAB code was developed to implement the mathematical models for a quick evaluation of solar energy potential in a radially staggered heliostat field for the capital city of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh. An existing clear-sky model in the literature was used to compute hourly insolation. Optical efficiencies and heat collected by the receiver (from individual heliostat in the field on hourly basis) were computed and the monthly-averaged daily results were presented zone-wise and for the complete heliostat field. It was observed that the optical efficiency of the heliostat decreases with increasing distance from the receiver tower; this was due to increasing spillage of the reflected rays and decreasing cosine efficiency with increasing distance of the heliostat from the receiver tower. Results showed that annual average optical efficiency of the field is nearly forty-nine percent.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129273427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Structural response of three laterally non-controlled moment-resisting reinforced concrete frame structures with three different soil conditions are have been investigated in this paper. The soil conditions include loose soil, medium soil and rigid ground. The soil-structure interaction of low-, mid- and high-rise frame structures with the above mentioned soil types was analysed by performing nonlinear response history analyses. A set of eleven earthquake motions was employed in the analyses and maximum structural seismic demands for the frame structures were calculated. It was found that pressure-independent relatively loose sandy soils are not very critical for low-rise structures. On the other hand, pressure-independent relatively loose sandy soils and pressure-independent medium sandy soils are highly critical for mid-rise and high-rise structures, respectively. Categorisation of the soils is performed based on the value ranges of a series of constitutive parameters. Further, fixity of the base is most effective in controlling storey displacements until approximately one-third of the structure height. Medium soil leads to highest maximum base shears in low-rise structures while fixed-base and medium cases, and fixed base state control the behaviours of mid-rise and high-rise structures, respectively.","PeriodicalId":259216,"journal":{"name":"NED University Journal of Research","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114797182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
