The advent and rise of new broadband services and network architectures (Triple-Play-Services, NGN…) depends on the ability of providers to achieve user's expectations in these scenarios. For that reason, the overall end user's perception (Quality of Experience – QoE) must be audited, on a regular basis, to address changing user's needs. This paper presents a general system developed to evaluate QoE on IP networks. The system architecture is designed to be capable of emulating multi agent networks and dynamically changing conditions. In addition, the results of a Web browsing QoE experiment, laid out within this emulation system, are described. The experiment was conducted on the basis of ITU-T Recommendation G.1030, and aimed to update the perceptual model, provided in this Recommendation, to today’s user requirements and technical improvements.","PeriodicalId":258907,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fifth International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125586930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An mathematical model shows that in comparison with unambiguous one, text entry, in multi-tap mode, doesn't offers better performance, because both tc and UIc are greater in them. Another method of text entry, called Tnk (Text in n keys), offers improvement with respect to unambiguous keyboards. But solely highly ambiguous key-board (4-keys keyboards) shows a jointly reduction in tc and UIc. Results obtained with the model do to focus on highly ambiguous keyboard. This paper demonstrate, using simulation with extensive text, that character prediction with TnK mode only have better performance than unambiguous keyboard with character prediction in UIc parameter. These overcome fundamental client-server issues and introduce new, self-management features that help improving performance. Recently, many applications such as PPlive, PPStream, Sopcast, and Joost have been deployed to deliver live and Video-on-Demand streaming via P2P. However, the P2P approach has also shown some points of failure and limitations. In this paper we analyze, assess and compare two popular Live and Video-on-Demand P2P streaming applications, Sopcast and Joost. Our goal is not simply to underline similarities and differences from the architectural and functional point of view, but also to highlight their performance in terms of traffic behavior and network efficiency; thus our experiments have been conducted in different scenarios including a large-scale event (Euro 2008).","PeriodicalId":258907,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fifth International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems","volume":"289 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116862571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a cellular adaptation inspired mechanism to make a component based distributed system self heal. In this mechanism components of distributed system are seen as cellules of body. Environmental changes in our body cause cellular adaptations; similarly, changes incomponents' environment cause system reconfiguration. Healing is done by healer components. Each node has one healer component that monitors components residing in that node. The system is monitored via monitoring messages that pass through components and it is adapted by reconfiguration. Components of system are considered as black boxes to keep the code of components intact even when they are self healed. The proposed mechanism is evaluated by running a scenario that is implemented in CORBA Component Model (CCM). The CCM is a serverside component model for building and deploying CORBA applications.","PeriodicalId":258907,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fifth International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132853428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The quality of the video depends heavily on the type of content. The aim of the paper is threefold. First, video sequences are classified into groups representing different content types using cluster analysis based on the spatial (edges) and temporal (movement) feature extraction. Second, we conducted experiments to investigate the impact of packet loss on video contents and hence find the threshold in terms of upper, medium and lower quality boundary at which users’ perception of service quality is acceptable. Finally, to identify the minimum send bitrate to meet Quality of Serive (QoS) requirements (e.g. to reach communication quality with Mean Opinion Score (MOS) greater than 3.5) for the different content types over wireless networks. We tested 12 different video clips reflecting different content types. We chose Peak-Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (PSNR) and decodable frame rate (Q) as end-to-end video quality metrics and MPEG4 as the video codec. The work should help optimizing bandwidth allocation for specific content in content delivery networks.","PeriodicalId":258907,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fifth International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134316111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, observation is considered to be an important mechanism needed for realizing effective and efficient coordination of agents. This paper describes a framework called Agent Observable Environment (AOE) for observation-based interaction in MAS. The framework provides 1) possibility to model MAS components with RDF-based observable soft-bodies, 2) support for both query and publish/subscribe style ontology-driven observation, and 3) ability to restrict the visibility of observable information using observation rules. Additionally, we report on an implementation of the framework for the JADE middleware platform, where AOE is realized as a custom kernel service.","PeriodicalId":258907,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fifth International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems","volume":"313 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116764207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An example of such applications is the exploration of unknown terrains, such as the zone of an earthquake or a similar disaster. In any such scenarios errors in the UV's sensors or systems used for localization may be present. Due to the harsh environment, errors can not be avoided. Thus, a localization technique that can operate effectively even in the presence of errors is highly desirable. In this paper, a technique used for 3D localization is presented. The technique operates with heterogeneous swarm of autonomous robotic systems, is scalable and robust enough to attain a position estimate even in the presence of errors in the available sensor information.","PeriodicalId":258907,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fifth International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126295889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in the last decades industry and academia have been paying increasing attention to another metric to evaluate servers: availability. A web server may serve many users when running, but if it is out of service too much time, it becomes useless and expensive. The industry has adopted several techniques to improve system availability, yet crashes still happen. In this paper, we propose a new framework to predict time-to-failure when the system is suffering transient failures that consume resources randomly. We study which machine learning algorithms build a more accurate model of the behavior of the anomaly system, and focus on Linear Regression and Decision Tree algorithms. Our preliminary results show that M5P (a Decision Tree algorithm) is the best option to model the behavior of the system under the random injection of memory leaks.","PeriodicalId":258907,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fifth International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126482033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such systems must avert adverse feature interaction where the adaptation of an existing feature or the introduction of a novel feature may result in unexpected and possibly adverse system behavior. This paper proposes resource-aware contracts for addressing adverse feature interaction in dynamically adaptable systems resulting from resource constraints. Resource-aware contracts explicitly capture the resource requirements of the individual components comprising a system. They are considered a fundamental means towards detecting and ultimately resolving adverse feature interaction and a key enabler of dynamic system adaptation.","PeriodicalId":258907,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fifth International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131104594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
