Two of these methods, the cumulant method and the point estimate method, are presented in detail. Moreover, the treatment of probabilistic loads is discussed in detail in the implementation of these methods. A comparison between these two methods is given through both theoretical analysis and case study to show their advantages and disadvantages. Based on the steady state model of VSC-HVDC system, a power control strategy is proposed and a series of mathematical analysis expressions for power delivery are deduced using the coordinate conversion and variables substitution in terms of the original equations. The corresponding power controllers are designed using the PI controller and the nonlinear inverse system. Based on the strategy designed, the transmission limits of active power and reactive power are deduced. According to the circle characteristic of operation represented, it is proved theoretically that the control strategy can independently control the active and reactive power. Case studies are also carried out to testify the control strategy designed using the PSCAD/EMTDC software. Although modern computer programs are provided with sophisticated graphical user interfaces, each program has its own modeling interface and model development methods. There are no portability or interoperability standards between applications of the same type. This issue creates significant and time consuming problems for the users since it is often required in the same organization to perform studies using different applications or to receive models available from different manufacturers using different tools. This paper focuses on methods that can be used for developing and establishing modeling portability. Both model data portability and actual model portability are discussed. State estimation is used for tackling the parameter estimation problem. The proposed methods explore the concept of irrelevant/barely relevant branches to eliminate/mitigate temporarily the participation of suspicious parameters in the state estimation process, until the suspicions are cleared up. Different situations, e.g. the occurrence of single/multiple parameter errors under unavailability of measurements, are handled. The methods distinguish themselves by the construction of a parameter estimation algorithm which does not modify an existing state estimation process, but interacts with it. Such assumptions can be alleviated with no cost in computation time using analog computation. Analog computation exhibits physically realizable solutions and significantly faster computation times as compared to digital. However, accurate analog models of power system components are required. This paper focuses on the development of an analog transmission line model incorporating time-varying phasors. More specifically, this model was designed for a previously proposed method of analog power system emulation. Prior research with this method has focused on a static representation of transmission lines. The dynamic model, proposed here, is a natural extension of previous work and allows for more accurate power system stability analysis. The region has an abundance of thermal coal, widespread solar availability and large rivers for hydroelectric power generation. Wind and ocean energy could be harnessed in limited quantities. The region currently enjoys the worlds lowest cost electrical energy as sourced from low cost thermal coal operated power plants located in South Africa. With increasing customer demands and climate change linked to thermal coal generation, the region has a two fold challenge, provide for more power but without thermal coal and to go back and start to replace thermal coal with more environmentally acceptable alternatives. In this search for an equivalent lower cost primary energy source, the value of the hydroelectric capacity of the major rivers of Southern Africa grows with time. The German legal framework has encouraged the installation and operation of renewable energy systems and cogeneration units. As a consequence, in the city of Mannheim, Germany, more and more distributed generators feed into the distribution grid. In September 2008, more than 300 small PV systems and cogeneration units have been connected to the distribution grid, with a steadily rising number and installed capacity. The distribution grid can still host that number and capacity of distributed generation without any major integration efforts. However, to reach the above mentioned political goals, the electricity grid planners will face the challenge to integrate a much higher number of distributed generators as well as higher fluctuating capacity while maintaining and even improving reliability and security of supply. In 2007, the German government has launched the technology program “E-Energy” [1]. Six research teams are currently developing new ICT infrastructures for six model regions in order to increase the efficiency of the energy system with ICT as enabling technology. This paper elaborates on the decentralized approach for a virtual power plant that researchers will apply to the city of Mannheim as one model city. Chapter 1 explains the role of individual customers who cooperate in a swarm like an organism. Chapter 2 provides the technical concept behind the new system architecture. However, when considering distribution networks, reactive power may not be an effective mean for voltage control. This is because of the X/R ratio which determines the controllability of voltage through active and/or reactive power. Therefore, in this paper a voltage control scheme is proposed based on the estimation of the X/R ratio of the grid.
