One facet of this preparedness is the ability to respond to the release of hazardous materials appropriately. While the threat of terrorism has led to an increase in public attention, the need for such capability extends well beyond the realm of defence against intentional release of a hazardous substance. Accidental exposures also require an adequate response plan. One key element in such a plan is the development, training and use of hospital decontamination teams. This paper will discuss a novel approach to the development of a hospital decontamination team at an urban university hospital.","PeriodicalId":257480,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Disaster Medicine","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129967382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, predicting when and how such attacks might occur has proven to be very difficult. Since the bombing attacks at the World Trade Center in New York in 1993 and 2001, the Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995, US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 and just recently in Saudi Arabia and Morocco, and the release of impressively weaponized anthrax spores in the US Postal System during the autumn of 2001, large-scale terrorist attacks on civilian populations using weapons of mass destruction no longer seem in the realm of the fantastic. At their worst, the New York, Oklahoma City, and Tokyo attacks may represent the crossing of a grim threshold, weakening long-standing taboos and increasing the likelihood of analogous attacks in the future. Materials and methods: A 1.5–7×108 cfu/ml bacterial or spore suspension was aerosolized. Fragments of the Muski filter, previously sterilized by gamma rays, were placed in a sterile stainless steel Seitz filter holder, plugged into an Erlenmeyer vacuum flask connected to a vacuum pump to force the bacteria aerosol through the Muski filter. As a control the same apparatus was used without the Muski filter. To evaluate the bacteria passing through the apparatus, diluent solution was introduced in the Erlenmeyer flask, which was then subjected to mechanical shaking. Both the contents of Erlenmeyer flask and the diluent solution, used to rinse out the Erlenmeyer flask, were filtered through a membrane filtration apparatus. The filtration membrane was transferred to the surface of a Petri dish containing a suitable culture medium f...","PeriodicalId":257480,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Disaster Medicine","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130542363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in cooperation with the Indonesian Red Cross, set up a complete multidisciplinary 100‐bed field hospital in the city of Banda Aceh to function as a temporary facility to substitute for damaged health care structures pending final reconstruction. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the specific pattern of injuries caused by the tsunami but also to describe the surgical and obstetrical problems treated in the absence of a functioning health care system. Methodology: All patients admitted to the surgical or obstetrical wards between 16 January and 10 March 2005 were registered by name, age, diagnosis and surgical or obstetrical procedure. Postoperative complications and special problems caused by the tsunami or by the field hospital conditions was recorded. Results: During the period a total number of 355 surgical interventions we...","PeriodicalId":257480,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Disaster Medicine","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121736767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
