Many aggregation schemes have been proposed, often with varying features. Most aggregation schemes are tailored to specific application scenarios and for specific aggregation operations. Comparative evaluation of different aggregation schemes is therefore difficult. An application centric view of aggregation does also not tap into the potential of cross application aggregation. Generic modeling may help to unlock this potential. We outline a generic modeling approach to enable improved comparability of aggregation schemes and facilitate joint optimization for different applications of aggregation schemes for VANETs. This work outlines the requirements and general concept of a generic modeling approach and identifies open challenges.","PeriodicalId":257339,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123811110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When many vehicles simultaneously disseminate data items in an area where the vehicle density is high by using opportunistic way on VANETs, many redundant packets are sent, and this leads to many packet collisions, and wastes wireless communication resources. To tackle the problem, we designed a scheme called R2D2V (RNC-based Regional Data Distribution on VANETs). R2D2V consists of (1) using random network coding (RNC), (2) adaptive changing Hello sending intervals, and (3) adaptive changing the probability of replying to Hello messages according to the vehicular density. Simulation results show that this scheme achieves a high data delivery ratio with low data delivery traffic and low delay when the vehicle density is high.","PeriodicalId":257339,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115992874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For instance heavy impact on bit-error-rate and packet-error-rate may come from physical layer phenomena which are either neglected — to make the overall simulation process faster — or managed by computationally heavy simulators — as in ray-tracing. As a result, current protocol simulations are not as much realistic as they could be. This paper proposes and evaluates two corrective models to the wireless simulation chain, and assesses their worthiness in terms of quantitative variations of the simulation outputs. An extensive comparative discussion on the results achieved with the corrective models provides a deeper insight into the validity and the limitations of simulations' outputs achieved. As a conclusion the paper shows that the proposed corrective models improve the significance of simulations and improve the significance of results.","PeriodicalId":257339,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131239823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While there are several existing broadcast routing protocols for highway VANETs, very few solutions exist for urban VANETs in cities like New York City or Chicago. This paper attempts to fill this gap by proposing a new broadcast routing protocol, namely UV-CAST, that addresses both the broadcast storm and disconnected network problems in urban VANETs. Key challenges imposed by urban VANETs as well as new mechanisms needed for this new scenario are identified and presented. Performance of the proposed UV-CAST protocol is evaluated in terms of network reachability, received distance, and network overhead in ideal Manhattan Street scenarios as well as in real cities, such as Pittsburgh. The overall performance of UV-CAST is excellent.","PeriodicalId":257339,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134503951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The CCRS may be set up on the run and connected to donor cellular network(s) with multiple mobile wireless backhaul links in a coordinated and controlled manner. This is in order to optimize, for examples, duplexing operation in relaying, load balancing and capacity sharing, as well as mobility management of the CCRS which serves a huge number of mobile users aboard of transportation. This paper addresses challenges as well as architecture alternatives and enhancements for incorporating the CCRS into advanced cellular networks such as 3GPP LTE-A systems. This paper also shows some methods to explore notable amounts of time-space and user diversities associated with the CCRS and performance gains of the CCRS.","PeriodicalId":257339,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134584868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to provide safe and efficient transport systems great efforts are currently being put into developing Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and cooperative systems. In this paper we extend proposed solutions with autonomous on-road sensors and actuators forming a wireless Road Surface Network (RSN). We present the RSN architecture and design methodology and demonstrate its applicability to queue-end detection. For the use case we discuss the requirements and technological solutions to sensor technology, data processing and communication. In particular the MAC protocol is detailed and its performance assessed through theoretical verification. The RSN architecture is shown to offer a scalable solution, where increased node density offers more precise sensing as well as increased redundancy for safety critical applications. The use-case demonstrates that RSN solutions may be deployed as standalone systems potentially integrated into current and future ITS. RSN may provide both easily deployable and cost effective alternatives to traditional ITS (with a direct impact independent of penetration rate of other ITS infrastructures — i.e., smart vehicles, safe spots etc.) as well as provide fine grain sensory information directly from the road surface to back-end and cooperative systems, thus enabling a wide range of ITS applications beyond current state of the art.","PeriodicalId":257339,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123295163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the proposed V2I communication system, the infrastructure forms multiple directional beams to detect, in the shortest possible time, vehicles that have newly arrived within the area of its service coverage. We also propose a contention-based channel access procedure in the proposed V2I communication system. During channel access, collisions occur when more than two vehicles select the same mini-slot to transmit an access signal to an infrastructure. To solve this problem, we propose efficient channel access schemes with different approaches. Through performance analysis and simulation results, we show that our proposed schemes can contribute to reduce the number of collisions that occur during channel access. In addition, we also show that the proposed V2I communication system can increase the service coverage compared to a conventional V2I communication system that uses omni-directional antenna.","PeriodicalId":257339,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124219255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to respect dynamic grid limitations during the charging process, electric vehicles and charging infrastructures have to negotiate charge and grid parameters autonomosly. The ISO/IEC Joint Working Group 15118 is working on the Vehicle to Grid Communication Interface enabling user-friendly plug & charge functionality and also allowing for grid compatible charging processes. This paper describes current efforts being conducted in the standardization group, discusses the current state of the protocol in terms of message specifications, and maps various V2G use cases to the current protocol draft. The evaluation focuses on the message exchange patterns between the electric vehicle and the charge spot. Due to the adoption of highly embedded devices in electric vehicles an analysis on the application layer protocol efficiency is provided in this work. It focuses on data encoding efficiency with respect to the current state of the protocol specification. Detailed investigations on physical and data link layers are not part of this work.","PeriodicalId":257339,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127820542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, three sampling methods in data stream theory are exploited in order to construct summarizations for these original data, since the original data are potentially unbounded in size and are impossible and unfeasible to be stored directly on the disk. Then traffic states, such as speed on any road, can be estimated based on the summarizations instead of the original data. The two measurements, absolute biases of speed and cover rates of information obtained from the constructed summarizations, are used in validating three methods' feasibility. Preliminary simulation results show three methods are feasible to some extent.","PeriodicalId":257339,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125266326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, not moving fake vehicles and vehicles with a plausible mobility model are not considered in other approaches. In this paper we propose an innovative signature based intrusion detection method that verifies vehicle movement data by applying a plausibility model. With our approach a single fake vehicle can be identified based on the plausibility model even if it simulates an autonomously valid movement. The results from the intrusion detection can be used to detect on the one hand road side attackers simulating faked traffic congestions and on the other hand attackers that try to deny real congestions by inserting moving vehicles into the network.","PeriodicalId":257339,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127022633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
