Distance learning and teletraining applications will be heavily based on multimedia information. The communication infrastructure has to provide end-to-end quality of service (QoS) support via application programming interfaces (APIs) to the applications. Therefore we looked into several QoS aware APIs and made a comparison between them. Winsock 2 on the client side and XTI on the UNIX server side are QoS aware, support both RSVP and native ATM and will be widely deployed. Therefore we decided to look first into these QoS APIs. As an application, we developed a MPEG-2 video streaming prototype which makes use of ATM's SVC and bandwidth reservation capabilities. After these first successful trials we will provide a large QoS aware backbone communication infrastructure based on ATM switches, with ATM to the desktop in specific application areas. In further steps we are going to deploy RSVP in non ATM based networks like FDDI, Ethernet and token-ring to deliver video streaming for specific user groups. In this paper we summarize the most important specifications and implementations of QoS aware communication APIs. Finally, we are suggesting a solution for a platform independent QoS aware API that is based on Java.","PeriodicalId":257298,"journal":{"name":"1998 1st IEEE International Conference on ATM. Existing MAC protocols for wireless communications, such as GSM, IEEE 802.11, and HIPERLAN, allow the mobile terminals to operate in different power-saving modes. We briefly present the case for the existing radio LAN, describe the WATM MAC protocol, and introduce a power-saving mechanism for the protocol. We also investigate the effect of this power-saving feature on each of the services that are being supported over the radio environment. Finally, we present the power-saving gain obtained with this approach, and the buffer requirements at the access point (a centralised topology is assumed).","PeriodicalId":257298,"journal":{"name":"1998 1st IEEE International Conference on ATM. However, the extension of ATM from wireline to wireless creates a new set of challenging issues. ATM standards are developed based on high data rates and reliable transmission links. This is in contrast to wireless channels where bandwidth is limited and error rates are high. Furthermore, existing ATM specifications are designed primarily to provide services to fixed end-terminals with little ability to adapt to mobile connections and the highly time-varying conditions associated with wireless networks. This paper surveys the major technical and service issues related to the deployment of ATM in third-generation wireless networks.","PeriodicalId":257298,"journal":{"name":"1998 1st IEEE International Conference on ATM. User population is partitioned into delay zones according to the round trip delays between the switch and the zones. The switch employs an ER (explicit rate) control. The contribution of input traffic from a source is upperbounded by the ER, which was specified by the switch round trip delay earlier. The aggregate input rate into the switch then becomes a weighted sum of past ER's, where the weights are determined by the number of sources and their levels of activities in respective zones. Given the history of aggregate input rates and ER's, the switch is able to estimate the traffic intensities from individual zones. The results from several scenarios demonstrate that the least squares estimation of the weight distribution across zones can provide the convergence in the maximum round trip delay.","PeriodicalId":257298,"journal":{"name":"1998 1st IEEE International Conference on ATM. One of the major drawbacks of CLIP is the co-existence of IP and ATM without quality of service (QoS) support. By extending the functionality of CLIP and redefining the mapping of IP and ATM addresses, QoS can be brought to IP-based applications without requiring any specific definition or implementation changes at the IP layer or above. QACLIP (QoS for applications using CLIP), the newly defined extension, allows applications to request specific QoS for their data transfer use.","PeriodicalId":257298,"journal":{"name":"1998 1st IEEE International Conference on ATM. The traditional circuit services effectively provide the equivalent of a direct wire through the wide area network from one customer premise to another. If a service customer suspects that the service is faulty, the service provider may test using in-service methods which use management overhead information multiplexed in the circuit framing or out-of-service methods which use bit error rate techniques. Tests for traditional circuit services can conclusively establish that the contracted service is provided at a given time. The virtual circuit model of service has been widely provisioned only in the last few years, beginning with frame relay and evolving towards asynchronous transfer mode (ATM). Virtual circuits are multiplexed onto the traditional circuits at the point of customer access. Virtual circuits allow a customer to transmit information into and across the service provider's WAN at a rate less than the maximum provided at the point of access. Additional virtual circuits may be provided on the same access line. These additional virtual circuits may be terminated at other geographic locations. Thus a customer may reach many endpoints over a single access circuit. Each virtual circuit leads an independent existence, providing a unique service and experiencing its own set of problems.","PeriodicalId":257298,"journal":{"name":"1998 1st IEEE International Conference on ATM.
