Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) extends the capabilities of smartphones even further and thus provides the potential for retailers to offer services to customers based on their location that is challenging with conventional techniques. Before embarking on developing solutions, it is vital to understand the factors that influence consumers to embrace this technology and ensure retailers can offer appropriate services to their customers. While a number of studies have discussed BLE, very little have examined it from the consumers' perspective. This study extends the UTAUT2 model with ‘privacy concern’ and explores the factors influencing consumers' behaviour towards proximity sensors within a retail store. The results confirm that all the factors except for ‘price value’ are statistically significant.","PeriodicalId":256906,"journal":{"name":"2017 Conference on Information Communication Technology and Society (ICTAS)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123704524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the recent growth in robust face recognition using facial components, facial landmark localization has proven to be an important phase for any subsequent processing on face images or facial components. Though it is conceptually very simple to locate facial landmarks like eyes, mouth, nose, it is challenging due to factors like illumination, occlusion, pose, inherent face variability and image conditions. Furthermore, other facial components like cheek bone area, forehead and nose-bridge provide more discriminant information between subjects. However, there is hardly any technique in the literature on how to detect these secondary regions. This paper proposes a technique that automatically detects a human face in an image and subsequently detect eyes, cheeks, nose, nose-bridge, mouth and forehead using Haar-cascade for detection of fiducial landmarks and spatial and geometric information of these fiducial landmarks for localization of secondary landmarks. The experiments are performed on FG-NET-AD dataset and accuracy of above 90% was achieved for landmark localization.","PeriodicalId":256906,"journal":{"name":"2017 Conference on Information Communication Technology and Society (ICTAS)","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121987675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper reports on the online component of the movement under the Twitter handle FeesMustFall. Previous research has, through the lens of Role Theory, reported on the different roles social media users play in terms of propagating Twitter messages. This paper extends previous studies by considering the different roles assigned to/= or assumed by subjects of Twitter conversations, in this instance “students”. The study has shown that the student fulfills multiple roles, primarily that of activist. The role of activist involves internal role strain between those activists classified as victims versus those classified as perpetrators. Furthermore, the role of activist is in continual role conflict with socially differentiated roles such as the police, media and government. Situation specific roles that have developed due to the movement include those of students as “solutioneers”, scape goats and actors. The multiplicity of the student role in the FeesMustFall movement contributes to a small degree towards understanding the definition of the FeesMustFall movement. The multiple roles of the student are complex and fluid, influenced by current events in SA both on political and social level. This will affect the identity of the student which can have long term implications for tertiary education in SA. Further research needs to be dedicated to understand how the identity and student roles and behavior are influenced by social media.","PeriodicalId":256906,"journal":{"name":"2017 Conference on Information Communication Technology and Society (ICTAS)","volume":"81 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120972703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With IVR systems, mobile phone users can access information by simply dialing a telephone number to create connectivity and communication with a server or internet. The use of IVR systems is applied in areas such as e-health, banking and finance, government, telecommunication, education, amongst others. Meanwhile, there is dearth of comparative studies of existing IVR systems, hence, the need to carry out a comparative analysis of these systems in terms of their features, strength, technology/platform, limitations and methods of implementation. This study provides a review and analysis of IVR systems based on these defined criteria. In carrying out this study, 40 articles were selected and only 38 that directly relates to IVR based systems were considered for analysis. The 38 papers are the ones that satisfied the inclusion criteria used to select systems for the study. These systems have been classified into five categories based on their domain of application and a comprehensive analysis and review has been carried out to guide IVR systems developers. The summary of findings show that VoiceXML vocal interface, Voxeo speech engine and MySQL database are the most widely used tools for implementing speech and touch-tone applications. The outcome of this survey will give future direction to potential","PeriodicalId":256906,"journal":{"name":"2017 Conference on Information Communication Technology and Society (ICTAS)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127574018","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The algorithm detects the facial components (eyes, mouth, nose), and then extract textural and shape features. If the face is partially occluded, the successfully detected components from the non-occluded facial part are used for recognition. The feature descriptors, Garbo Filters and Zernike Moments have been used for textural and shape features, respectively. The combination of these two descriptors has a significant high discriminative level of extracting distinctive features from the facial components. The experiments were carried out on four different facial databases, the ORL, FERET, FEI and CMU. The experimental results achieved an overall accuracy rate of 93.9%. The experimental results show that component-based facial recognition is effective.","PeriodicalId":256906,"journal":{"name":"2017 Conference on Information Communication Technology and Society (ICTAS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129889313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It comes at a time when the demand for software programmers exceeds the dwindling supply of competent learners with suitable skills. This growing skills gap requires a bold intervention to turn this situation around. Preliminary results from a user questionnaire indicate a positive reaction to learners being exposed to programming using Scratch Software as a prelude to the introduction of Robotics using LEGO NXT units. The objective of such an intervention is to provide individuals with a hands-on experience of programming to convince them to select Information Technology as a subject in Grades 10–12 in the hope that they will one day choose a career in programming.","PeriodicalId":256906,"journal":{"name":"2017 Conference on Information Communication Technology and Society (ICTAS)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114108000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, due to the increase in use of mobile phones in developing countries, these interfaces can now be adapted to languages in these settings to support information access on the Web. In this study, we propose two mobile search interfaces — text and voice — to support isiXhosa speakers to search for information on the Web. Experiments were conducted with 34 native isiXhosa speakers to measure satisfaction with the two interfaces. The results show that isiXhosa speakers were more satisfied with the mobile text interface.","PeriodicalId":256906,"journal":{"name":"2017 Conference on Information Communication Technology and Society (ICTAS)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123541778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Efforts on the part of security agencies need to stay a step ahead of threats of terrorism to effectively prevent their occurrence. Many research efforts that sought to combat terrorism using big data have been reported in the literature. However, most of them have targeted data from only one type of social media per time. This paper proposes a model that harnesses data from multiple social media sources in order to detect terrorist activities by using Apache Spark technology for implementation. This paper describes the Social Media Analysis for Combating Terrorism (SMACT) model as a plausible approach that leverages Big Data analytics to address terrorism problems in developing nations. SMACT is further illustrated by a practical use case from the Nigerian context in order to depict its viability as a potential panacea for handling terrorism threats.","PeriodicalId":256906,"journal":{"name":"2017 Conference on Information Communication Technology and Society (ICTAS)","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126183255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous research in this field has mainly focused on optimizing features and matching algorithms. In this paper, we present an effective alternative approach for producing a reference signature that generalizes the properties of the given sample signatures. Two experiments are conducted: using the traditional Average Reference Signature (ARS) and using the new Average Permutative Difference Signature (APDS) approach. The Discrete Fourier Transform is applied on signature information and the Fast Dynamic Time Warping algorithm is used as a matching algorithm. Experiments were carried out on the skilled forgeries of the SVC2004 database, yielding False Rejection Rates of 0.31 and 0.51; and False Acceptance Rates of 1.84 and 1.36, for the two approaches (ARS and APDS) respectively.","PeriodicalId":256906,"journal":{"name":"2017 Conference on Information Communication Technology and Society (ICTAS)","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123245830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These devices are valuable resources that can be harnessed to improve users' lives. This project aims at leveraging these older, unused devices to help improve road safety, specifically through the improved response time of emergency services to accident locations. An Android application — Mobile On-board Vehicle Event Recorder (MOVER) — was designed and built for the purpose of detecting car accidents through the use of acceleration thresholds. Driving data was gathered and crash simulations were run. With this data, testing and analysis were conducted in order to determine an acceleration threshold that separates normal driving from accident situations as accurately as possible. With this application, users can leverage their previous or current mobile devices to improve road safety — for themselves, and their area as a whole. A promising level of accuracy was achieved, but significant improvements can be made to the application. Large opportunity for future work exists in the field, and hopefully through the development of this application, other researchers may be more inclined to investigate and test such future work.","PeriodicalId":256906,"journal":{"name":"2017 Conference on Information Communication Technology and Society (ICTAS)","volume":"160 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115995692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
