Eng et al. (1989). They focus on the cell loss probability, because the architecture attains the best possible delay-throughput performance if the packet switch modules use output queueing. They compute an upper bound on the cell loss probability for arbitrary patterns of independent cell arrivals, possibly including isochronous circuit connections, and show that both sources of cell loss can be made negligibly small. For example, to guarantee a cell loss probability of less than 10/sup -9/, this growable architecture requires packet switch modules of dimension 47*16, 45*16, 42*16, and 39*16 for 100%, 90%, 80%, and 70% traffic loads, respectively. The applicability of the two fiber types is discussed, taking account of channel frequency separation, total channel numbers, input signal power, transmission length, and receiver sensitivity degradation. It is noted that NDS fibers operated at lambda =1550 nm can be widely deployed in multichannel systems both for the long haul and information distribution transmissions if the signal waveform distortion due to fiber chromatic dispersion is precluded. The analyses make use of a lightwave system simulation package designed to accommodate transmitter, fiber, semiconductor laser amplifier, and receiver characteristics. Transmission at 4 Gb/s through a single-mode fiber (SMF) is simulated, taking into account the interaction between laser wavelength chirp and both fiber chromatic dispersion and optical-amplifier transmission characteristics. The results indicate that the mismatch penalty, arising from the transiently varying mismatch between the instantaneous laser wavelength and the peak gain-wavelength of the amplifier, can be reduced substantially by tuning the amplifier wavelength to 0.7-0.8 AA less than the static lasing mode of the laser.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":256305,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, 1989, and Exhibition. It uses packaged 1.54- mu m DFB (distributed feedback) lasers stabilized at absolute frequencies and a tunable, polarization-insensitive receiver. System experiments show that a power penalty of 0.3 dB is incurred at a channel spacing of 8.5 GHz due to adjacent channel crosstalk. Results using an erbium-doped fiber amplifier gave a fiber-to-fiber gain of 22 dB and an amplifier dynamic range of 15 dB for the entire transmission spectrum. It is shown that the former can effectively solve the bandwidth-assignment problem for ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) when different classes of services are multiplexed on the same network trunk. The virtual leaky bucket technique is used as a bandwidth-enforcement policy. It has the advantage of combining the policing function on each source with congestion control on the cell loss rate in the network. The method uses a labeling of the edges of the network graph and the subsequent solution for the transfer function of the resulting signal flow graph. A Taylor series expansion of the transfer function yields the number of paths of a given length between the source and the destination. It is desirable that this number be large so that routing strategies can provide alternate paths to reach a node in case of congestion or link failure, with increased reliability, recoverability, and reduced delay. On the other hand, the derivative of the transfer function yields the average number of hops in the network as a rational function of the probability of deflection of a packet. A fixed-point algorithm is used to solve for the probability of deflection as a function of the arrival rate of packets. Combining the two results permits the average number of hops to be obtained as a function of the packet arrival rate. Statistical methodology is used to characterize the intermittent use of SS transmitters, making it possible develop a model for the interference generated from such a cluster of transmitters. It is shown how current coordination and design procedures must be revised if one wants to optimize the use of SS technology without harmful interference to victim terrestrial receivers. For example, for a cluster size of 50 and activity factor of 10%, it is shown that the effective number of exposures can be taken to be 15.
