Concave transducers are only one of the different techniques used to deliver high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) into a target during oncologic treatments in order to provoke tumor ablation. However, the acoustic field characterization for HIFU transducers is made at low power level in order to avoid hydrophone damage, while in therapy high acoustic power is applied. HIFU focus size is usually in the order of mm, making difficult its location during experimentation. Finite element modeling is helpful method to simulate focused ultrasound propagation and interaction in a simulated medium with ultrasonic properties similar to soft tissues. In this work, comparison is made in water as propagation wave medium.","PeriodicalId":255935,"journal":{"name":"2012 Pan American Health Care Exchanges","volume":"3 Suppl 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131316033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the calibration of this type of probe it is necessary the use of flow phantoms. This study proposes to develop a pump with some particular geometric characteristics, able to simulate the left ventricle ejection pattern. In addition it was made a hydraulic circuit to simulate the main mechanical characteristics of the human vascular system. With this model monitored in real time by a pressure transducer, it was possible to obtain pressure profiles similar to those found inside the aorta. The adjustment of the firing pattern of the pump and variables that control the system resistance and viscoelasticity allow the simulation of clinical situations, as well as the analysis of the effect of each variable alone in the pressure profile. Relying on the principle that the arrangement of blood vessels occurs in parallel, it is expected that the connection of pipes with diameter, length, resistive and viscoelastic properties similar to those of specific vessels, will induce flow patterns similar to those found in the human vascular network.","PeriodicalId":255935,"journal":{"name":"2012 Pan American Health Care Exchanges","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132985544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this project the forearm muscle signal is acquired through superficial electrodes and processed with a designed circuit in which signal amplification, filtering and other conditioning take place. All of these steps are conducive to obtain a final command so that the user can control the arm prototype at his will with just a tiny muscle contraction.","PeriodicalId":255935,"journal":{"name":"2012 Pan American Health Care Exchanges","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122165510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we propose the Lung Sound Automatic Verification (LSAV), and other modalities to represent acoustic lung signals obtained by auscultation using a digital stethoscope. The utilization of quantiles allowed a) an easier and objective assessment with smaller computational demand, b) building of less-complex Gaussian Mixed Models (GMM) than those reported previously, and c) to reach practically negligible error in healthy LS verification. These approaches relate the lung sound energy to its characteristic frequency components, which in addition to a reliable verification technique simplified the normal lung sound recognition. Once the LS are evaluated, it would be possible to simplify classification if an individual auscultatory evaluation falls into the category of normal or abnormal indicators thus providing a tool for broader medical evaluation which does not rely, as it is often the case, on a qualitative and subjective description of these sounds.","PeriodicalId":255935,"journal":{"name":"2012 Pan American Health Care Exchanges","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123790703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A training system and protocol is used to acquire the sEMG signals. The last of four training stages is used. These signals are processed, segmented and labeled, automatically, as three different levels of contraction. The level's order (1-2-3) varies from one session to another. The automatic segmentation and label proved to work with the 20 sessions. Segmentation and labeling comparison of 4 training sessions' results is shown. The used algorithms provided good results with all 20 sessions.","PeriodicalId":255935,"journal":{"name":"2012 Pan American Health Care Exchanges","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127545630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its measurement and management directly affects healthcare providers' decisions about budgets, administration and maintenance. In this paper the authors present a case study, conducted at Albert Einstein Hospital which uses both Six Sigma and LEAN methodology/tools to improve the inventory control over critical medical equipments. The Six Sigma philosophy aims to diminish the errors committed, avoiding rework while LEAN aims at reducing all form of losses and wastes in the manufacturing process. Significant results were attained, increasing the selected indicator (complete forms) from 62,6% to 99,4%, which benefit both the hospital's management as well as the patient's level of care.","PeriodicalId":255935,"journal":{"name":"2012 Pan American Health Care Exchanges","volume":"493 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115330005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
