Thereafter growth faltering is a commonly observed phenomenon in developing countries after about 3months of age. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess colostrums feeding status in selected rural area. Methods: It was a cross sectional observational study. A total of 400subjects were estimated and mothers having child aged between 0-6months of age were included in the study purposively. A pretested questionnaire was used to collect data. Results: The mean (±SD) age of the respondents was 24.4years. Majority (63%) of the mothers had given colostrums to their child and 37% refused it. About 66.1% mothers whose had first baby practiced colostrums more than being second time mother also had statistically significant association (p<0.05). Majority 69.4% of mothers took health care services from public hospital given colostrums more than the mothers taken from private hospital and 73.7% non Muslims mothers practiced colostrums. Those variables had an association with colostrums feeding (p<0.05). Conclusion: Tradition with cultural belief among mothers and elder family members has an impact on colostrums feeding as well as maintenance of optimal breastfeeding practices.","PeriodicalId":254980,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Nutritional Health & Food Engineering","volume":"222 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134087493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In developed countries, only 5% of patients die and 15-20% develop sequel whereas in underdeveloped countries 12-50% of patients die and 25-50% of patients develop sequel. Malnutrition can make a person more susceptible to infection, and infection also contributes to malnutrition, which causes a vicious cycle. A hospital based prospective cohort study was conducted in the Pediatrics department of Mymensingh Medical College & Hospital from February 2012 to February 2013 to compare immediate outcome of bacterial meningitis: in malnourished and well nourished children. Thirty (30) cases of well-nourished and 30 malnourished were enrolled by using purposive sampling. Fever, convulsion, bulged fontanel, abnormal behavior, headache and respiratory symptoms were presenting complaints in both groups and convulsion was significantly more in malnourished group. In Malnourished group, GCS on admission was <13 in majority whereas among well-nourished group it was 13-15. CSF findings were similar. Most of the exposed children were anaemic. Total 12(20%) children died, 14(23%) developed major sequel, 10(17%) patients developed minor sequel. Relative risk of death was 5 fold followed by major sequel 6 fold and minor sequel 4 fold in malnourished group. Hospital stay was more in malnourished group. This study reveals that acute bacterial meningitis occurred in all ages from 1 to 12years child of both sexes and more in under five age group and in males. Fever, convulsion and sign of meningeal irritation were prominent clinical features. This study concludes that death, major and minor neurological sequel were more common in malnourished children and young age, male sex, anaemia, weight for age Z score <-2SD/ BMI <3rd percentile, GCS< 13 were the bad prognostic factors.","PeriodicalId":254980,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Nutritional Health & Food Engineering","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130823506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

HPLC-DAD quali-quantitative analysis of Green tea (GT) and Chamomile tea (C) revealed the presence of some phenolic compounds in both teas, with GT, having the higher total phenolic content. The results of antioxidant indices of the teas revealed that both teas demonstrate good antioxidant action with GT ranking higher. The mineral analysis of the teas showed varied levels of the evaluated minerals and the calculated [phytate]/[Ca], [oxalate]/[Ca], [phytate]/[Zn], [Ca][phytate]/[Zn] molar ratios of the teas fell below the critical values, thereby revealing that Ca and Zn and other minerals would be bio-available. The effects of the teas on the liver biomarkers and the histological examinations showed no damaging effects on the liver. This by implication is that the teas, most especially GT could be explored as functional foods.","PeriodicalId":254980,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Nutritional Health & Food Engineering","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121631284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The result showed that the extraction number of anthocyanins by ultrasonic-assisted enzymatic method was the highest. On the basis of single factor experiment, the response surface method was used for optimization. The impacts of experimental factors on extraction amount were successively the enzymolysis time, enzymolysis temperature, pH value, ultrasonic power, amount of enzyme added and solid-liquid ratio. Through polynomial regression analysis, the regression model of anthocyanin extraction rate was established, and according to the actual production condition, the following optimal process parameters were determined: enzyme addition: 1.5%; solid-liquid ratio: 1:32; pH value: 4.30; enzymolysis temperature: 54 °C; enzymolysis time: 55 min, and the ultrasonic power: 300 W. Under this condition, the extraction amount of anthocyanin from Cherry Wine lees was 4.19 mg/g.","PeriodicalId":254980,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Nutritional Health & Food Engineering","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124249940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of under nutrition and associated factors among pregnant women. Method: An institution based cross sectional study was conducted on 321 pregnant women attend ANC follow up in Alamata General Hospital, Northern Region, Ethiopia from April 1st to June 20th 2017. Study subjects were selected using systematicandom sampling technique based on the annual patient flow.Data were collected by using a pre-tested, structured, and standardized and interviewer administered questionnaire and wasting was assessed by using anthropometric measurement MUAC of pregnant women. Descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis to identify associated factors and multivariable logistic regression analysis were employed to control the effect of potential confounders. Variables with p value < 0.05 in the multivariable model were identified as predictors of under nutrition. Result: The overall prevalence of under nutrition among pregnant women was 22.3%. Multivariable logistic analysis showed that age group of 15-24years old (AOR: 0.19, 95% CI: 0.57, 0.638), pregnant women with educational level of university (AOR: 0.25, 95% CI: 0.079, 0.789) and supplemented iron foliate during pregnancy (AOR: 0.356, 95% CI: 0.140, 0.906) were negatively associated with under nutrition. Whereas pregnant women with husbands of primary education (AOR: 17.461, 95% CI: 3.401, 89.634), took anti- malarial drug during pregnancy (AOR: 4.298, 95% CI: 1.314, 14.063) were positively associated with under nutrition. Conclusion: This study revealed that the prevalence of under nutrition was relatively high based on WHO standards. Therefore, nutrition intervention targeting illiterate and age of pregnant women is highly recommended. Further study should be under taken to explore other determinant variables.","PeriodicalId":254980,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Nutritional Health & Food Engineering","volume":"42 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130680388","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
