Distinct from the former theories(1-5) this paper has taken into consideration theinfluence of the longitudinal magnetic field and the 3-d structure of the scattered field with the method of plasma kinetic theory. The spatial growth rate formula for the case of magnetic resonance is derived. The results show that the 3-d structure of the field has harmful influence on gain and would even cancel the instability altogether under certain conditions. A condition for eliminating the harmful effect and obtaining the maximum gain is derived and a suggestion employing hollow beams with small wall thickness is made. This theory is a generalization of that by P. Sprangle and R. A. Smith(5) in consideration of the longitudinal field and the 3-d structure of the scattered field.","PeriodicalId":254777,"journal":{"name":"1981 International Conference on Submillimeter Waves and Their Applications","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124821920","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper is not intended to provide a comprehensive review of millimeter detector and mixer technology but rather is intended to point out some research areas of current interest. In the following paragraphs, a few comments on the status of Schottky-barrier diodes are made, including recent data [10] on a beam leaded configuration utilized in hybrid integrated circuits. Efforts to increase the burnout capacity of Schottky-barrier diodes and to use of other types of diodes such as TUNNETT and BARITT diodes as high burnout mixers are described. This discussion is followed by consideration of detectors and mixers which operate at cryogenic temperatures - devices based on Josephson and quasi-particle tunneling (SIS) junctions, super-Schottky-barriers and hot electron effects. Some work underway on cryogenic refrigeration is described also.","PeriodicalId":254777,"journal":{"name":"1981 International Conference on Submillimeter Waves and Their Applications","volume":"145 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116391673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
