It is well-known that the radiation throughput of the grating spectrometer is severely reduced as the resolution is increased, it is this lack of radiation energy and the accompanying need for long measurement times which has led to the rapid expansion of the Fourier technique as the basic FIR instrument. However the grating does have a number of advantages, namely it is real-time, resolution over a small spectral interval can be improved by closing the splits without a too prohibitively long scan time, it has high contrast, i.e., its spectral purity when used with good blocking filters is very good. Numerical calculations show that the CO2 laser is tunable over 1 GHz and that a pulse shaping is possible. The interferometer will provide: (a) line average electron density measurements for densities up to 2 × 1014 cm−3, (b) a permissive signal for control of neutral beam firing, and (c) an input signal for the gas feedback controlling system that regulates the electron density level. A 1mm wavelength was selected because of the following considerations: 1. A reliable 1 watt carcinotron source is available. 2. The cut-off density for the probing frequency, 1015 cm−3, is a factor of 3 above the highest average density to be measured. 3. At 1mm wavelength refraction problems are not severe along the available horizontal mid-plane transmission path (i.e., along the density gradient). 4. Low-loss in over-sized waveguide allows the interferometer to be located remotely from the tokamak and thus minimize environmental problems. 5. The purpose of this optical system was (a) to provide control over the field of view in the PLT plasma, and (b) to allow the coupling of radiation from a blackbody source to the Michelson to be as much like the plasma-Michelson coupling as possible, in an effort to make absolutely calibrated measurements of the ECE. During the Würzburg meeting, a carbon mirror was installed for us on the far wall of the PLT vacuum vessel so that it served as a viewing target for the optical system. Preliminary measurements, conducted in a superradiant amplifier configuration, indicate the production of tens of MW's of power at approximately 3.5 mm (85 GHz), a wavelength consistent with a coupling of the slow-space-charge wave with the fundamental waveguide mode in the presence of the wiggler field. The radiation conversion efficiency is several percent, an order of magnitude improvement over previous experiments.
