The clamped output voltage level includes the overshoot due to distant placement of the suppressor devices and EMI filter capacitors. This degrades the performance of transient voltage surge suppression systems. The three fold decrease in track width deteriorates the performance substantially. An experimental study with supporting formulae is reported. Effects of different PCB layouts and placement of varistors driven with a 1.2/50 /spl mu/s combination wave is reported. The effect on the performance due to location of the EMI filter capacitors and varistors on the PCB track is discussed along with the results. Relevant winding loss equations are derived and applied to an optimization algorithm that searches for the design that minimizes the total winding loss at a given core height and footprint area. It has been found that the curves of winding loss versus winding arrangement with different core height show a minimum loss at a critical winding arrangement and core height. Below or above these critical factors, the loss increases drastically. In order to improve the utility-side current THD characteristics of this converter, the feasible optimum PWM pattern under conditions of lower switching frequency for large capacity applications is introduced. By using a moving-average that provides a digital filter function for measured variables, the ripple component of carrier frequency can be removed. This deadbeat control scheme with proposed optimum PWM for current-fed three-phase PWM converter could be successfully applied to improve the transient response of utility-power source line current. The rectifier produces near unity input power factor and sinusoidal input current under any operating conditions. In addition, the proposed rectifier has a few other features such as reliable operation and high voltage operation capability. This paper addresses a number of system design considerations such as switching pattern, input power quality and the effects of discrepancies of transformer leakage inductances on the system performance. A decentralized control scheme, which neither requires a priori knowledge of the plant nor learning of the system dynamics, is introduced to deactivate the coupled dynamics associated with certain systems like robotic manipulators. The NN is employed to classify the system input-output measurements into several patterns depending on the displacement and velocity deviations from the respective desired trajectories. A proportional plus derivative gain control action is determined from a look-up table corresponding to the classification from the NN. Furthermore, an integrator is applied to enhance system performance. However the available energy is dependent upon several parameters like the charging time, charging rate, self discharge, aging of the cells and the permitted voltage up to which discharge is to be allowed. Thus the stored energy content must be known accurately to predict the backup operation time left in the event of abnormal mains supply, after which the UPS has to be shut down. This paper presents a method of online calculation of the battery backup time depending on the actual rate of discharge and its terminal voltage. This technique takes into account the charge condition of the battery, the self-discharge aging and change in load current to give a true estimate of backup time. This information is sent to the computer via a serial port and is displayed at one corner of the user monitor screen.
